    Most of the people on here complaining about how the animals are being abused and should be set free are the same people that will leave their trash on the beach, forget to cut soda rings, drop trash in storm drains and other water ways, and, if given the chance to get close to one in the wild knowing it's dangerous and especially not ok (or illegal) to approach a young animal, would totally try to pet one or get a selfie instead of respectfully observing from a distance or calling the proper authorities to help an animal that may be in danger or seems to have been abandoned or injured. Don't listen to the haters guys. This was an awesome video!

    I understand people's criticisms of zoos and aquariums (I myself don't like the idea of unnecessary animal captivity), but saying all aquariums are like SeaWorld can be a dangerous generalization. There's a difference between rescuing and rehabilitating animals, and capturing, breeding, and training animals for entertainment. This video does not provide enough information for you to conclude that the animals are in mistreated or have a lower quality of life than in the wild.

    • @scarletpanda4224
      @scarletpanda4224 6 років тому +33

      Yes there are good places that do rehab, conservation education and training for animal safety and enrichment (not people's entertainment, training like "put your fin out so we can get a blood draw for the vet") those are places (typically AZA accredited) that are not for profit, they also do research, rehab, breeding programs to help endangered animals.

    • @allyson9188
      @allyson9188 6 років тому +41

      Taylor Swiftie I have seen Black Fish, but that documentary is very specific to SeaWorld and the orca whales. It's good to be critical of these places, but based on what's in this video, you can't really claim that it's the same situation as SeaWorld.

    • @hollowtpm
      @hollowtpm 6 років тому +23

      just remember that Black Fish only told one side of the coin. Without Sea World funding a rescued center, there would not be as much research into care and rehab of many marine animals. Also if Sea World closes, say goodbye to the funds that are used to rehab and release stranded animals in Florida. Sea World is the largest rescue facility down there.

    • @Raquel.maksoud
      @Raquel.maksoud 6 років тому +2

      Of course they have a lower quality of life than they have on the wild... no tanks can ever compare to the ocean

    • @hollowtpm
      @hollowtpm 6 років тому +19

      yea? that's why in many cases, animals live longer in the care of humans. Due to that "lower quality of life." you'd be amazed what zoos recreate just for an animal to have the best quality of life.

    Thank you for showing what we as zookeepers do and the goals we try to achieve. There is such a bad stigma starting that zoos are horrible and all should be shut down (granted some are really bad that don’t have uptodate or any regulating bodies). It’s nice that you’ve shown that we do this for a reason and nothing is more important to us than our animals health and well-being.

    • @scarletpanda4224
      @scarletpanda4224 6 років тому +9

      Courtney Hawkins Zoos are such an important resource to us now. Yes in the beginning of zoos they were bad, concrete cages with no enrichment. But they have evolved so much since then. Most Zoos, especially AZA ones do research to protect endangered animals. They have breeding programs to keep genetics healthy and hopefully to be able to reintroduce animals into the wild. But the most important things zoos and aquariums do is they teach. The public wont care about things they dont know or understand.

    • @scarletpanda4224
      @scarletpanda4224 6 років тому +5

      Plus zookeeper like you have jobs like that certainly not for the money 😂, but because you care, and you want to make a difference in the world. Zookeeper strive to give the animal the best life it can in captivity so that it can be used as an ambassador for its species so that they can have a normal, undisturbed life in the wild.

    Shedd is such a beautiful aquarium. I got to visit this summer and saw so many animals I never thought I’d see up close and personal. A hammerhead shark, sea turtle, HECKIN BELUGAS.
    They have one of the best aquatic shows. They have a small pod of dolphins (can’t remember what kind) and as the belugas were doing their stuff they were on their side flipping and jumping all ready to go and preform. Their trainer wasn’t even making them do it. They were genuinely excited to do tricks.
    So many people are commenting about “rescuing from the wild.” But if you watched you’d know what they meant. Orphaned, seriously injured, etc.
    If you visit Shedd you’d see how many of their animals are actually rescued. They have a sea lion who was found. He’s their only sea lion, he’s blind and has trouble navigating. But he does well at Shedd because he trusts the trainers and knows his area. You learn about him in the show. They have a giant tank with a bunch of hammerheads and other fish. Huge fish. One of the occupants of the tank is a sea turtle named Nickel. They found a Nickel in her stomach. She stays at the aquarium because she only has one front flipper, and in the wild she would have trouble. There she gets all the food she needs, as well as a little cushion to rest on. Though she really likes laying on the rocks.
    They have so many animals there and treat all of them with love. Not all aquariums and zoos are horrible. At places like Shedd homes for the animals. They love the trainers and the trainers love them back.

    • @scarletpanda4224
      @scarletpanda4224 6 років тому +14

      JordansAWolf Im glad you can appreciate the education aspect of aquariums. They are a useful resource for teaching people to care. And your right, those animals would have died if they were in the wild. instead they are getting good care and helping by being ambassadors for their species. People wont care unless they are taught. And they connect more and care more by seeing the animals up close. And the training they do, yes some is just fun tricks. but most are for the vets and keepers to check their health. and animals are intelligent, they need stimuli in the form of enrichment and training. they want to learn, so we teach them. it keeps their mind active and healthy and promotes natural behaviors.

    Thank you for this video! So many people think animals shouldn't live in captivity, period. But in today's world I'm so thankful for places like this. Habitat loss and illegal hunting are putting so many species in danger. The Panamanian golden frog is extinct in the wild due to the parasitic chitrid fungus, so captive breeding is the only hope for the species. And the Sumatran rhino- there are only a handful left, only in captivity, and breeding efforts are their only hope. African penguins' population has fallen something like 80% in the last twenty years and captive breeding and release has helped the population dramatically. And Fiona the hippo? She was born 6 months premature, and it was a huge effort from zoo staff and veterinarians to save her. If she was born in the wild she would have died. I know people want what's best for the animals- they don't want them to be held like prisoners. There are a lot of instances though, when zoos and aquariums are the safest for the individual and most beneficial to the species' survival.

    • @kaleighfoley
      @kaleighfoley 6 років тому +4

      You might have a point with some species. However, there is absolutely no justification for the captivity of cetaceans like beluga whales. They are far too intelligent and emotionally complex to be kept in tanks. There have numerous studies that have reveal the severe stress that these animals endure when the attempt to use their ecolocation in captivity. The sound waves bounce off the concrete walls of the tank and the whales/dolphins become frustrated and confused.
      Lets also not create this facade that these facilities are solely for "educational" purposes. This particular zoo/aquarium trains their dolphins and whales to do pitiful circus tricks like waving their fins and spinning around. If they really wanted to demonstrate what these animals do in the wild, they would show behaviors like spy hopping, breaching, and diving.

      dogsrock9120 did you read my comment? Zoos may be making a profit but they’re also doing a tremendous amount of good for animals who’s habitats are being destroyed or the species being wiped out by dresses. They raise awareness, raise money, research, and help with repopulate the wild. We’re on the same team here. We want what’s best for the animals.

    • @karthikasheela2819
      @karthikasheela2819 6 років тому +4

      Hi @dogsrock9120, I personally volunteer for Zoos Victoria which is a massive organization with convservation parks all over Victoria, Australia. They have saved various species from extinction, with 17 species living in captivity at the moment that are critically endangered or extinct in the wild. Now, these animals are not there forever. Most healthy individuals get released back into the wild if they prove to be fit enough to survive. Every single animal that we see when we go to one of their zoos is there for a reason. Either they are not fit enough to go back to the wild or are promoting some kind of conservation message which will help save their species. I get where you are coming from, because there are so many private breeders who take advantage of being able to have animals in captivity and make money off them. Zoos do make money of people who come to see the animals. But this money dont all go into their pockets. These organizations get little to no funding from the government and the money they make from the public is not enough to do everything they want to do. And majority of the people who work their genuinely love and care for the animals. If you are still doubtful of a specific organization, go down their and have a look, see how they work. If you don't like it, report it.

      Dr Woo uh i'm not a much of an animal expert but what if those trainers are their to train them to eat? because some of them got separated from their mom and their mom usually train them to eat but because they can't find their mom anymore those trainers train them to eat and survive in the wild? some animals can't survive in the wild anymore tho.

    • @myfeetarecold2816
      @myfeetarecold2816 6 років тому +17

      its all g man, calm down. There are instances where animals prepped to be released into the wild simply don't want to be, the transport cage opens, and they will literally hang around the trainers as much as they can. Just like,,, the zookeepers are trained well enough to know when an animal is happy enough, and it is literally their job to make sure they can be happy where they are.... so like,,, chill

    • @scarletpanda4224
      @scarletpanda4224 6 років тому +43

      Yes some of their animals.are non releasable, like their blind sea lion, or their hammerhead with only one front fin. some of their animals are just on exhibit until they are done healing and get released. the trainers are their for their perminate residences. They are essentially keepers. they care and feed the animals. Most of the training is for medical reasons, to keep the animal.and the vet safe during the process. also they train for mental stimulation, enrichment like those toys they put the food in. It helps keep their mind active and promote natural behaviors. They care about their animals, they use them to teach the public to connect with the animals and care. that's why they do the big shows. it's not abuse or for entertainment. it's to get people to stay and listen so they can teach them about the impact himans have on the oceans. and animals do not have to perform. if they say no, the trainers dont makw them. there is never and negative reinforcement only positive, like food and toys.

The animal care field is a rough place and training + caring for marine mammals is no easy feat. I worked with seals and sea lions at my local aquarium for 2 years and it was so time consuming and difficult, yet so rewarding. I’m currently going to school to become a certified marine mammal trainer and hope to one day work with whales and

    "I wish we got to touch the otters, but understand that they are fragile, gentle creatures."
    You probably weren't allowed to touch the otters for their health and your safety. Otters are otterly (haha) adorable, but they are intelligent animals and can be quite vicious. Being bitten by a sea otter would be terrible because they have sharp teeth and a strong bite. Touching the otters would mean potentially loosing a finger.

      Because she cares for the animals and wants to teach people about these beautiful creatures. She trains them a lot of times for vet purposes, but also for enrichment. Animals are smart and need lots of mental stimulation, training does that for thrm. it's not abuse

    • @birdie_.
      @birdie_. 6 років тому +1

      Olivia Roupe thank you, that’s exactly right, the animals are all rescues that cannot be returned either because they had no mother and no instincts to survive on their own, or they are injured and unable to be rehabilitated. The animals are in great care, they even live longer in captivity due to a proper diet and lots of fun entertaining toys are added to their enclosure. so they are never abused or in distress, they just get trained for medical check ups and people happen to enjoy watching, as do the animals enjoy watching the people😊 they have such amazing personalities

      It does happen quite a bit with sea otters where they get separated from their mothers. (the moms wrap the babies in kelp while they hunt and sometimes they get untangled and the current beaches them) At least with the monterey bay aquarium's sea otter rescue program they use boats and take the babies around hoping the mom will here them cry, but if they don't they raise and rehabilitate the ones they can (though I don't know if this aquarium does rehabilitation)

      Taylor Swiftie i think you need to do some research. We do not abuse our animals. We care for them to the best of our facility. Yes every aquarium is different, but most aquariums are not bad. A lot do rehabilitation, and most importantly we educate people. The animals in captivity are ambassadors for their species. Lots of people don't realize the effect they have on the oceans and water ways, even if they live in the middle of the states. We teach them so they will understand and care, and male a difference or change in their lifestyle so that their impact on the world isnt as bad. People connect to these animals on a personal level if they can see them in person. They won't care a whole lot of they just read a book or watch a video on it. because the problem isn't around them or doesnt include them.

    Just a reminder that Aquariums aren't always like Sea World. Sometimes it is important for certain animals to be held in captivity for certain periods of time. Aquariums are a lot like Sea Hospitals? Sea World is basically a Sea Prison. One place is generally good and cares about it's patients the other is filled with inmates who probably did nothing wrong and should be free.

    • @gerbilitus
      @gerbilitus 6 років тому

      This is another sea prison. Sheed Aquarium supported the 2013 capture of 18 wild beluga whales in Russia. Don't be fooled. Cetaceans don't belong in captivity. They are far too intelligent and emotionally complex.

      I for one am not a big fan of large mammals living in enclosed areas. I am from Chicago and knowing my city and knowing this aquarium in the city, we are all able to bond with these animals. You’re only witnessing a SMALL part of what they have gone through. I personally think that the shedd is one of the more humane aquariums out there. They study and protect the animals. It’s for environmental science, marine biology, etc. they come together as a community. As a whole.

    • @georgiastewart8813

      Ashley Bui I’m a marine biology major, I also live in New Zealand where we have laws passed where dolphins are no longer allowed to keep captive. Any dolphin interaction is done in the wild, and I can promise you there is no need for them to be kept in captivity other than our own enjoyment and entertainment. And yes, you can argue conservation and education, and I fully believe a lot of zoos and aquariums are doing some amazing work. However, I like rehabilitation type aquariums. We have some in New Zealand where animals are taken care of and released when they are well enough, so much better than living their whole life in a cage. Even for animals bred in captivity... it’s heart breaking. A lot of these animals are highly intelligent and shouldn’t be kept in a tank.
      In saying that, some conservation work is good, and sometimes it’s necessary for survival of these animals, I very much believe in rehabilitation and release afterwards. But let’s not pretend the majority of these places are okay or natural.

    • @chloe1-2-3-4-5
      @chloe1-2-3-4-5 6 років тому +7

      My issue is specifically with keeping whales and dolphins in captivity of this sort, especially when they are show trained. I think that sometimes zoos and aquariums are great and do a lot for conservation, but I think cetaceans are too highly intelligent to be confined in this way.

      The shed aquarium trains the animals for enrichment but also exercise. What you saw was only a fraction of what the animals live in. I'm sure the orphaned animals prefer free food and safety from predators, over death. Those animals would have died without their mothers protection. Just think about how scary it would be to live as these animals, being hunted on A daily basis by what ever animals ranks higher in the food chain. It's not all fun and games. Now that these animals are protected by humans, they can live a safe life, with free medical care. We have humans dying everyday from starvation, war, curable diseases(etc). These animals have it good. Free food, free medical care, don't need to worry about being eaten alive.

      Bat Mon if you are here to “troll” me, step aside. Do your research on simply the filtering system in these aquariums. Especially those animals with sonar capability. I understand when it comes to animals who are without parents or who have been harmed and they cannot surviveOn their own I completely agree with captivity because otherwise they would not have survived. If you really want your eyes open take the time to watch blackfish and the Oscar nominated the cove and then let me know how you feel. I’m not here to change anybody’s mind what I am to do is here to make people aware of what is actually happening

    • @myfeetarecold2816
      @myfeetarecold2816 6 років тому +26

      you mean, 'what is actually happening' in some aquarium instances. Blackfish was good in that it showed how NOT to treat animals in captivity, and SeaWorld paid the price for its ignorance. However, that has a specific reference to orcas. orcas do not have the same thought patterns as sea lions or penguins. Animals are one-track minded; they will be happy wherever life is easiest. If that's in a zoo, they'll be happy with that. Your initial statement of "So sad that these animals are in captivity" is really invalid as, if animals are treated correctly (which is most often the case), you have no need to feel sad, or so to speak. The animals are happy where they are, why can't you be?

      Like they said, it is for conservation.... Im still okay with this, but compared to the SEA aquarium where killer whales are kept in such a small space, that is a big no.

      I went there a couple years ago. The animals live a comfortable and active life there. They’ve also been assisting in reintroducing some of them back into the wild.

    Why are these wild animals being trained? They aren’t for people’s amusement. Let them be free!

      it's also necessary to train them foe husbandry purposes (for example, to have checkups, medical procedures, feeding, etc.)

      Dr Woo all of these animals were rescued from the wild because they would have died. They are cared for very well and “trained” for education, and for extersize and there own well being. So please stop.

      The training is for medical purposes and enrichment. It is less stressful to an animal if they participate by choice than by the use of anesthesia.

    Beyond surprised that an innovative and influential platform such as buzzfeed would be naive enough to create content like this. Perhaps you could use your voices to affect change and educate future generations on the negative health implications such places cause to the creatures they claim to care for.

      Shedd is good to their animals tho. Many were rescued and can’t be released. One of their FISH lived to be over 60 years old. They care for their animals. They play with them and make sure their brains are healthy as well as their bodies. The ones who stay at the aquarium are the ones who can’t be released. Like their sea turtle with one fin. Or blind Sea Lion. Not all these places are horrible to their animals.

      AGAIN with the uneducated BS. Based on your comments, you yourself can't speak for the animals. You know nothing professionally, and you're in a fight you can't win because to you, feelings > facts.

      I don’t think they’d want to leave the place that feeds them everyday. I know I wouldn’t.

    Just normalizing whales in aquariums like that's humane. I got no problems with the penguins and otters but whales have NO place in aquariums.

      They only have a small pod of dolphins and a few belugas. Just because they’re there, doesn’t mean they’re unhappy or mistreated. I visited the aquarium this summer and they looked happy and very well cared for.

      yeah sure, in rare cases. Thats because incompetent twats dont know how to treat the animals. Its not the concept of zoos/rehab centres that are bad, its the people who dont know how to handle things properly.

      Dolphins are straight up just crazy animals. They kill their babies in the wild as well. There's no way to say for sure that any time they have killed their babies while under the care of humans (btw there's only one case that I can find where they did this and many more where babies were born and not killed) was because they were "unhappy." We are humanizing them by saying (and assuming) "they are doing this to save their young from this terrible life," when in fact, they do it in the wild as well.

    I've been snorkeling in the EPCOT aquarium. You swim with giant turtles and huge fish like gruber. There were shark in there too, but they were right at the bottom and well fed! That freaked out my niece and nephew who were only 8 and 10. In the end my niece had to get out, but my nephew went back in and stayed near me. We toured the aquarium hospital and saw dolphin and manatee being treated for illness or injury. The public could see us in the tank and waved at us - think they thought we worked there! Only time I've ever worn a wetsuit! Best experience of my life and we have amazing memories and photos of the day.
