    I’m a marine biologist with over a decade's worth of experience working with marine mammals. I've received a fair number of comments asking how in the world you get to have my job.
    The first thing you need when building a career working with animals is a passion for conservation and wildlife. The hard truth is it requires a lot of education. For me, it began when my parents first took me to the zoo. I remember looking at all of these animals that i couldn't possibly hope to see in real life except for in a zoo or aquarium.One reason 've always been such a pro zoo and aquarium advocate is because there's no other way that a kid from the suburbs of Colorado could possibly meet some of the most spectacular animals in the world if not for amazing facilities like the Denver Zoo.
    The next step for me and most marine biologists is getting an education. Most places looking for marine mammal trainers will require at least a four year degree so I picked a university renowned for its animal expertise. I double majored in biology and zoology. There's lots of different options depending on which occupation in marine biology you're looking for. If you want to be a marine mammal trainer, then I definitely recommend at least taking a few psychology courses. The psychology of the human brain and the animal brain is basically exactly the same and a lot of the principles that we use like operant conditioning and positive reinforcement in marine mammal training are things that are taught in basic psychology courses.
    The most important step to becoming a marine biologist is hands-on work experience. So while I was a student, I also volunteered at the rocky mountain raptor program. This is a birds of prey rehabilitation facility where I worked with owls, eagles, and hawks. After I graduated, I applied to countless internship opportunities across the US and Canada.
    Unfortunately, unpaid internships are a huge part of working with marine mammals. Most people I know did two, three, even four of these before finding their first full-time job. I followed my internship up with the second one back stateside. It was at the end of that internship where i was finally offered a paid position back at the Vancouver Aquarium.

    My entire career has been in ophthalmology and I recently decided to follow my dream to work with animals. I was lucky enough to obtain a job in a veterinary hospital. I can testify that I took a huge decrease in pay and would not have been able to take that leap 10 years ago! Animal caregivers do not make a lot of money, it must be a passion! I too volunteered and agree that it is what helped to open doors!

    okay this video just really spoke to me. i am from denver too and when you said that my jaw dropped. that helped me kind of grasp this idea of “i can do this too”. i have a really big heart for animals and i want to work with them but i’m not sure how. i want to help injured animals and help them get back on their feet, but it takes at least 8 years of schooling to be a vet which is a lot. we will see what i end up doing but this video really really helped and i appreciate you so much :)

    Hi KP, you have no idea valuable and moral building this video is. see most of my experience with animals came from volunteering at World Bird Sanctuary, a raptor sanctuary and rehab. I grew up with a passion for marine mammals. I then took an. internship at New England Aquarium with their penguins. what you have given me is valuable, because now I know its possible to turn bird experience into marine mammal experience!

    Are expansive outdoor, multi-species exhibits with underwater viewing platforms to expensive for the average zoo? I know RSW systems are pricey the further south the exhibit is constructed. Can the Walruses live in the same exhibit as a California Sealion? I'm aware of what a Polar Bear will eat, I was surprised that they have company. My short stay in the Aleutian Islands made me feel that we were in their World, not the other way around.

    • @KPassionate
      @KPassionate  10 місяців тому

      Walruses cannot be held with other species. They will kill other animals. But some other species can be housed together.

      I'm excited to study a Bachelor of Animal Ecology. University will be extremely tough. But I have the passion & determination to succeed. My door in life has finally opened. One things about dolphins I've researched, Dolphins sleep with one eye opened and they use half of there brain. Dolphins in the ocean like playing with the Puffer Fish which is extremely Poisonous what I've found on my own research. All of this is just fascinating.
