    I'm three weeks into my semi-freeform loc journey. My hair is fine and I have 3B loose curls naturally. With bigger/looser natural curls I've noticed challenges with loose hair and my locs keep shape and part due to prior breakage. I installed my locs with 2 strand twists this time around but will go more freeform to let the broken hair repair throughout the journey. I love that every hair type has a different journey which makes this community so beautiful. My hair locked quickly in my 1st journey which was completely freeform with dry brittle hair & no oil. All I have to say is finding the right oil - especially a light oil just on the scalp with peppermint, is KEY! This has been the self love journey I've needed. Here for the journey.

      Thank you so much for sharing! Im so glad that you have rejoined the community and I am so excited for your journey! How did you install your locs on the first journey? Besides parts and breakage, how do you find this journey to be different or similar? And what are some of the oils that you have tried other than peppermint oil?

    Great video!
    1. Haven’t experienced dryness since loc’d. I had really bad scalp psoriasis prior to locking my hair. I can 99% confirm it was CONDITIONER that was causing my scalp to freak out! Don’t use conditioner. You don’t need it! Also be careful with using too many oils. Speaking from experience, you can cause buildup and irritate your scalp if you use too much of it. All I do is wash with 1/2 aloe vera juice 1/4 dr bronner’s 1/4 water. No conditioner.
    2. I spray rose water on my locs everyday for the most part. I use the Eden Body works Jojoba Oil (dime size amount) on the length of my locs. On my scalp I oil as needed with wild hair growth (yellow bottle) or Alikay Naturals Hair Growth Oil. I’m actually trying to move to using less oil. Oil can weigh the locs down and make them too heavy.
    3. I used aloe vera gel the first time I re-twisted my hair and never used it again. I use water and oil only to re-twist And I only request every 12 weeks. If you’re experiencing thinning I would highly suggest stretching out your retwists. Definitely don’t interlock as interlocking makes the locs smaller. My hair also grows away from the locs. I either crochet if it’s a big portion or lightly wrap the hairs around the loc and they find their way eventually. The oil could be weighing your hair down. Your hair looks very similar to mine. It’s fine and fluffy and doesn’t need much of anything to lock really. Just likes being left alone.
    4.Last time I counted I have 80 something. Coverage was my biggest concern as I don’t like the “scalpy” look. In the parts of my hair that I know are more fine, I made them slightly smaller so I could have more volume. I have combined a good few along the way that I knew were too small. I’m happy overall with my sizes and #.
    5. This is my first set!
    6. I started them with two strand twists and wouldn’t have started them any other way! Love them!
    Love this video and the open dialog it invites!

      Thank you so much for engaging in this dialogue with me Queen! It's beyond appreciated! I am sorry for responding back so late. I am starting off in this youtube world, so sometimes my abilities to catch all responses in time can be completely off, so I do ask in advance for patience, just in case if I don't catch a comment in time, just know that I will always respond :D
      Reading through your response, I am convinced we are hair sisters! Everything you stated was quite spot on with what my hair undergoes. I have actually stopped using conditioner as of recently, so probably by my 11 month, I have stopped. My hair normally gets the conditioner or additional softners it needs like the oils and the mixtures I put together or even the natural oils that my body produces, as my scalp and my face tend to produce a ton of oils. And yes you're right, we need to be careful for all the oils we use, as that can cause build up or blockage within your roots.
      I think thats why I stick with almond, avocado, peppermint and jojoba. These oils havent failed me as of yet or created any kind of blockages that I can notice on my hair thus far. But I must admit, as I go along in my journey, I want to move further away from product usage in total and just let my hair flow with one oil and water. Maybe moving further towards creating my own in house concoctions with the natural ingredients that I carry at home. I am hoping that I can accomplish this before my 2 year journey!
      I can't wait to see where this journey takes the both of us and I hope that we will stick around with each other to support each other during this journey :D

    I have that challenge also with loose hair around my locs. I'm 7 months in. What I do is just leave it out and start another loc with the loose hair even though it is really little. It's not going to stay in the loc anyway so I just started another loc. I only have two locs that are like this...so far I guess. I don't think I will have any more.

      Brenda Steele I wish my crown was so lucky 😂 Thank you for sharing and engaging in this dialogue with me. How has your journey been so far? My first journey wasn’t like this & I think that’s because they were much smaller in comparison to these. This garden is much larger than my last and I believe it’s showing me what it would rather do, than what I want it to do and it’s forcing me to listen, because no matter how many times I crochet the hair in, it pops right back out by the next monthly wash 😤 learning to listen more and fuss less 😌

      Girl my locs are also bending a lot.
      I just told myself and my locs that once I'm past this stage....we are going to be more beautiful. I have in the past tried to straighten them out...but it doesn't feel natural for me to do that so I just roll with it 😏

      @@brendaesimpson2027 Absolutely! Let them do their thing. Put curls in them, because they will probably love them lol my hair loves curls, especially the bottom row because it curls under. And yes, I didn’t think I could either, but I wanted to try and see how my hair would handle it. I’m finding my locs are looking a bit more manicured these days in comparison to when I first began, maybe it’s because I’m placing more focus on them 🤷🏽‍♀️

    As far as the itchy scalp, our scalp is trying to detox itself from all the crap we put on it. You may have to wean yourself off of most of the oils and do a scalp detox of your own. Most of the time all that stuff in our locs and loose hair just clogs up the pores and causes buildup.

      Brownmahfun I am in the processing of trying to locate one specific oil that I can use due to having thinner/finer hair. What I have been seeing my hair responds to the best is peppermint oil, Vitamin E oil, Argan Oil & Jojoba Oil. I incorporate this in my moisture routine, which happens maybe 2x a week. The next step is to do an acv rinse to see how my hair has been holding up over this last year.

      @@travelwla1282 I have found from all the oils I used that my hair is tremendous with my sebum of all the things. What I mean is my hair feels like most 4 hair people feels, it is hard and stiff with substance, that is how it feels in its normal state. You will have to know the difference between dry hair and normal feeling hair. But when I rub my sebum it softens it, just a tiny bit and it feels like it is part of the strand.

    maybe you could start an interactive zoom or Ted talk about this.
    1. Have you experienced excessive dryness/itchiness during this journey or transition into the loc community?
    never really experienced dryness. the first time i went to the professionals. it would be shampoo, conditioner hot oil treatment then twisting.
    did 3 session like 6 month in between. Became to expensive for me i would re twist every 2 weeks. i used the Mango and lime Gel not the wax or jam. when you sahke it it moves(so it doesn't clump up your hair). for oil i also used the sproil by mango and lime also. it has a tingling sensation. i def
    2. What have you used? How have they worked or what are you possibly looking to change to in order to help your hair?
    3. Did you use gel when you first began or do you continue to use gel? And how does it work for your hair?
    i def recommend mango and lime again the one that shakes like jello and it feel very light on your fingers.
    4. How many locs do you have? And have they affected how your hair grows from the roots?
    i cut off my locs maintenance process , plus the front of my hair was thinning out.
    5. Is this your first loc journey? If not, how many have you had?
    no longer on this journey
    6. How did you start your babies? Do you wish you would have started them off a different way?
    i wish i didnt start them after having braids, my hair was thinning at the front. i thought the loc would help but, it turns out locs do split as well. but i thing it was the pulling from the twisting that made it worse. it almost been a year since i cut them off and my hair at the front is fine again.
    PS. can you drop in the descriptions the products you talked about, includethem in your video so i could see what brand or both. etc
    thanks for starting this

    Hi, I may have some answers to some of your questions. First off, the thing that is called "hair growing away from your locs" is just breakage. It usually happens to people of finer, whispey, softer or thin coarse hair. I hate to have to tell you this BUT you will have to fix it before it start breaking off. The hairline will have to be maintain even more often. To much hair in the hairline is not good. Please look at "SEBATREYU VIDEOS", "DOES YOUR HAIR GROW AWAY FROM YOUR LOCS"? He has other videos on the subject and Please excuse his annoying music and listen to what he has to say, so that you can be educated.

      Brownmahfun thanks sunshine ☺️ I have been following his videos for some time now. He does give awesome advice. I have been experimenting with my hair over the last couple of months & it does seem to be getting much better, especially since I have incorporated the crochet needle. Regular retwists don’t tend to work for long times on my hair & that’s fine, especially since I don’t care for freshly retwisted hair 🤣

    Would you like to know my hair practices? Ok, I will tell you. I have locs and I do the ''water wash hair method''. I use only natural water based things on my hair, If I use anything at all. My locs get a water wash whenever they feel dirty and I use my own sebum and rub it down the loc to moisturize my locs. No oil necessary. Sometimes what people mistake for dryness is how our hair feels naturally. In order to get some nutrients and strength to my hair I use "fermented rice water", with a few drops of essential oil. It is a protein so you have to watch your hair, to see how much you can use it. Please watch "Ingrid Hart videos".

    • @travelwla1282
      @travelwla1282  4 роки тому

      Brownmahfun I have heard fermented rice water does wonders!! And can you explain more about sebum? And I use rose water right now, as I have seen that does wonders for me, but I am trying to move towards other alternatives, as I see my locs are growing and I want them to be as healthy as possible

    • @Brownmahfun
      @Brownmahfun 4 роки тому +1

      @@travelwla1282 Yes. You will want to lightly scratch your scalp and rub your sebum down your locs and the ends of your locs can be rubbed on your scalp. It doesn't work so well if you have a bunch of oils sitting on your scalp. Sebum will feel like a wax and it is whitish looking on your scalp, that is not dirt it is our natural oil. But it will sit there and it is up to us to rub it down. Please do try the "Fermented Rice Water" it will make your hair stronger. Some people can do it everyday, while others can only do it once or twice a week/month. If the rose water is helping you, you don't have to stop, it wont strip your sebum. See "Water only wash method", if you want to view that. If you are using oils, or gels, or creams or any oil based products, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE SHAMPOO in order to get these things out.

    I just started semi-freeforming ~6-7 months ago (been locd since I was 7 and am 19 rn) lately my scalp has been acting out extra bad even though Iv always had dry skin/scalp & a little eczema but I think college stress is making it worse😪 Iv been using a mixture of castor and jojoba oil which has been a real help but I wanna incorporate rose water and some lighter oils because castor although I mix it with jojoba is a little heavy for frequent use. My mom used loc gels most of my loc journey I haven't noticed any build up but she only used light gels so I think thats mayb y. My locs in the back of my head are thining so Im currently combining some of them its kinda annoying though because my hair is ridiculously thicc everywhere else (i had to make 2 knew locs on the crown of my head) I honestly dont remember how my locs were started (I was prety young) but my mom interlocked my hair until recently (I do my own hair now). Also I just want to say I love this type of interactivity especially during these times, stay safe & well 😊

      @Be Tee thank you so much for sharing and visiting the page. I loved your breakdown of your loc history. When I first started mines, I feel like I could barely remember some of the details that were actually damaging to my hair, so its hard to avoid some of them 🙁 other than combining, do you know of any other methods that you have seen that has helped with the growth? I would think that maybe crocheting them together and letting them do their thing might help. How often do you retwist?

    • @betee2555
      @betee2555 4 роки тому +1

      @@travelwla1282 I haven't seen any specific thing that help with growth Iv never really had that problem (my locs are thining in the back cause my hair annoyingly doesn't grow into them) I retwist around every 2 months but I try to make sure I separate them after every wash. Iv noticed though that my hair grows into my thicker locs in the back which is why Iv decided to combine them. Now that I think about it I started to notice alot of growth of hair (especially on the crown of my head) when I started managing my hair less often; Iv made had to make 2 new locs there but tbh my hair has always been a bit unruly and the minute I leave it alone a new one pops up so idk y im surprised. Sorry Im not mor helpfu but tbh I just started really taking care of my own hair recently (kinda sad commin from a 19 yr old I know) but I hope shared experiences can help

I believe one fact that we have already established, is when you leave your hair alone, stop over managing, then growth is bound to take place Lml if you have any questions that you would like to ask, please feel free to leave them below and I will be sure to put them in the next video
