Good to know that residue doesn’t impact the value of the coin. These coins are cool, might have to buy one myself! Thanks for another informative video matt!!
Hey Matt , thanks for your help on Thursday morning with me and my friend selling some of our stack before Christmas , I ended up buying the 1986 $200 coin which is my first one of these type of gold coins from Max Stern on the same day as I was talking to you about it and the 1986 uncirculated version didn’t come in a flip it came in a blue card folder with a lot of info about the coin and series.
Hi Matt. Great video again 👍. Would you consider doing a video explaining tax obligations for coin collectors in Australia? Particularly bullions vs collector coins?
Absolutely! I'd definitely need to consult with my accountant and make sure I don't get myself into any hot water with potential financial advice but that's a great idea! Thanks for watching ☺️
I own both, but in my opinion the sovereign is a nicer looking coin. I remember when I was a young kid back in the 1980s watching a TV commercial promoting the koala $200 gold coin, $200 was quite a bit of money back then.
Thank you for the info! I am a sovereign guy...That is an amazing image. I think you should do a video on your dream coin. Then your dream coin from the US and maybe some other world areas.
I suspected you'd be more of a history enthusiast when it came to coins, just a hunch I guess? 😂 That's a great idea!! I'll have to give it some thought and get to work! I hope you're well mate! 👏
I don’t have any $200 gold coins but I do have a couple of full and half Sov’s. Thanks for the Vid Matt I did not know very much about the $200 coin 👍😀
Thanks for the heads up 👍 i didnt know about PVC damage i just recently purchased two folders one for my $2 coins and one for my $1 coins the folders are both made of PVC and all my coins where stored inside them for about 2weeks 😢 yes i notice that they have been affected by the PVC in that short time 🤮 thankfully i seen this video and removed them strait away, are they destroyed ? What should I do ? Should i try to wipe the residue off ? Please help me with this connundrum 🙏
I like the Tassie devil and emu. They have proved a good investment i think for the people who purchased them when they came out. The first one cost 205.00 and you had to order them from the commonwealth bank i think. The price went up considerably over time and people stopped bying them.
Thanks for watching Wisey! You're absolutely right, they have experienced a nice increase in value over the years and the release price was a real bargain upon reflection 👍
Hi Matt!...Question ...The 2006 8 Gold Coin set, apparently there were only 300 sets issued,I would think 3000 myself!!......I have only seen TWO for sale over the last few years,do you know if all 300..or...3000sets were issued,or did they not sell well?
Thanks so much for watching! The design was a culmination of a few ideas I had about how I wanted the business to "feel" as well as a nod to the city I live in (Melbourne). The building featured is Flinders Street station which is a major transport hub and one that I pass through on a regular basis. ☺️
For stacking, 10 grams of 22ct. makes it an easy weight to work with. I still favor sovereigns , though. Btw, don’t you have to pay tax on 22ct in Australia?? Nice vid, might have to get myself one just for comparison. J.
@@ThompsonsCoins If you exchange a $2 nickel copper coin for A$8, you have to pay gst. But if you exchange the same $2 coin for US$5.5 you are just exchanging money at a very attractive exchange rate. 😅😂😂
It is confusing that some earlier year bullion coins attract GST and some don't. There must be some confused people in the ATO. Anyway, I'd just count any GST as additional premium above spot.
Thanks for watching mate! If your objective was to put together an iconic Australian collection of bullion coins one of these would absolutely be worth putting into the mix! 👍👍 Although there's a few other coins I'd put ahead of it 🤓😂
What I’d take now that I have gotten the only $200 coin I was after I’d have too say I’d take a full or half sovereign any day no matter the head or mint mark as long as it was Australian.
Can you please do a show on the rams head sheep coins. Up to the golden one down to the five cent I think federation sets. Or coronation. I’m new to this so. Or give me please. But I LOVE THE ADVENTURE FROM EVEN STAMOS NOW. Wish I had my collection from my kid days. But they all get lost. Be nice to have some if my old old coins. Ahh. Could only find some at the early tips around Melbiurne in the 60,s
That's a great idea Michael! Thanks for watching and making the suggestion ☺️ half the fun of collecting can be recreating old sets you may have once had 👍
Hello Mr Thompson. I DO like those $200 coins BUT probably for all the wrong reasons. If there is such a thing. I had no idea they minted soooo many. Where did they get all that gold? 🤣 Thanks again Matt Thompson! Cya!
Thanks for watching Robbie! Surprisingly, not all gold produced in Australia comes from Australian mines! It comes from a range of sources but I'm not sure of the exact origins of these coins 🤔 Another tick for the sovereign! ✅
That was a really spectacular design, it actually won a number of awards I believe. The gold does indeed feel a bit closer to a sunset than the silver 😊
Yes but it's against the law to melt down your not aloud to deface the Queen .. your just should be talking about the face value .. get your words straight .. it's just a coin like a stamp 😊👍✌️
I actually did a video highlighting the law regarding melting down coins which you may find interesting 😊 Coins and stamps in this sense are very different, I've never heard of someone destroying a stamp in order to convert any intrinsic value into currency. I'm also not certain that the same laws apply to postage stamps as they are intended to be cancelled/used which could conceivably be a form of defacement. I'd have to double check that though! Thanks for watching! 😊
I've been seeing some of the coolest coins on this channel. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words Cortez! I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying the videos! 🥳
Good to know that residue doesn’t impact the value of the coin. These coins are cool, might have to buy one myself! Thanks for another informative video matt!!
Thanks for watching Jenna!! Lucky you know who to contact if you ever need any! 🥳🥳
I quite like the Pride of Australia series, anything that celebrates the things that make our country unique I'm on board with usually.
Thanks for watching Rygoat! There's certainly no shortage of fascinating and distinctly Australian coins out there 👍👍

Nice one!! It was great to meet you and hope you enjoy the coin ☺️ those cards are packed with interesting information too!
I love these $200 coins as they are readily available for stacking and attract less of a premium than sovereigns.
Thanks for the video Matt
Thanks for watching mate!! 😄😄

Wow didn’t even know those coins existed, interesting contents.
Thanks for watching Hanh! ☺️

I have a 1843 gold sovereign I found metal detecting, so for me a gold sovereign, love the coin and history
That's amazing! I know a few keen detector owners who are still yet to find anything of major interest 👍👍

The emu gold proof one is stunning
Very cool indeed!! Thanks for watching Kayne!! 👍👍
Thanks for your thoughts
Great video Matt 👍
Thanks Kayne!! 😄
Hi Matt, your video is very educational, thanks. Personally I also prefer the sovereign, more interesting.
Thanks so much for watching I really appreciate the support 😄 another vote for the sovereign! ✅

Thanks for watching Oscar!!! 👍👍🥳
Love your logo!
How did you go about designing it?
Thanks so much for watching!
The design was a culmination of a few ideas I had about how I wanted the business to "feel" as well as a nod to the city I live in (Melbourne). The building featured is Flinders Street station which is a major transport hub and one that I pass through on a regular basis. ☺️
Also the reason I brought the 1986 version is because that was the year I was born in.
Always a sticking point for me too, any time I catch a coin with my birth year it's hard to pass by 😄
Imagine trying to use that at a local shop lol. Great video as always 😇
Thanks for watching Thomas! There's probably a whole series of content in trying to use various commemorative currency in shops! 🤣

Thanks for watching Jamie! Tax is applicable on all non bullion coins so anything that is 22ct will incur GST :)

Beautiful coin .. ty for the vid
Thanks for watching William! 👍☺️

Do you think the $200 coin is essential for an Australian collectors stack? Great video as always dude ✌
Thanks for watching mate!

Shield Sovereigns are the Best , but eyeing of a $200 proof Platypus this week end.
Ahhh I love the shield sovereigns, they have such a beautiful design! All the best with the platypus coin! 👍👍
I would take the Sovereign
Good call!! 👏☺️☺️ Thanks for watching!!
Hi Matt.Thomps...Merry Chtistmas...
If you don’t mind me asking, what is your birth year young man?
Is it illegal to destroy legal tender?
It is indeed! Thanks for watching ☺️
A 1920 S Sovereign please!
I'd have to pull a few strings to get access to one of those 😂🤔 stranger things have happened though!!
Handsome and nice smiling😊😊😊
I’d go for the $200 over the sov
A very sensible approach! Thanks for watching mate! 👍
I have a 2011 Kangaroo at Sunset. My only gold coin. Looks great in gold but no so good in silver. A silver sunset? Nope
That was a really spectacular design, it actually won a number of awards I believe. The gold does indeed feel a bit closer to a sunset than the silver 😊
Worth around $900-$1000 today
I'm about a year late but currently, they're about $1,073.00.
Sovereign hand down
Thanks for watching! Another tick for the sovereign! ✅👏
Best I can offer is chocolate coated sultanas 😂
A different kind of treasure for sure 😂 thanks for watching!!
To answer your first question, yes. I have one for the year of my birth
is gold? i am find 1 pcs,koala 1984

hahahaa
There was 250 still left last week, this week there's still 249 left... Who bought 250 of those stupid coins!?
225 ... The only thing good is it will not scratch as easily.
I'd buy a 10g fractional gold instead. No gst.
You can use the coin as evidence that the biggest denomination of Australian legal tender is not $100 but $200 in a gathering. 😜
