@@Yowzow Haha somewhat, I haven't tried moonwalking in a while, I haven't really focused on it a whole lot but I do it by accident all the time with Falco but obviously it's barely there with falco, Link is a good character to practice with too.
Alec Bal I've learned that you just have to press super fast. So you can either try and do it by sliding from y to b with your thumb (the same speed as when you multishine), or you can bring your index finger from z and use it on y and put your thumb on b. That's what I do.
+Kyle Reese "(the same speed as when you multishine)" You can do it faster because there is no lag if you jump in the air. If you jump on the ground you have to wait a certain amount of time.
if you're attempting this with Marth, i recommend wavedashing in the direction you want to moonwalk with him. the explanation for this is because Marth can only noticeably moonwalk from a walk and since his walk is too slow, throwing your momentum forward with a wavedash and then walking a little, then doing the half-circle motion, allows him to moonwalk farther then he would with a regular walk forward. :) great vid Kira, loving the silly intro!
Defy also, i'd like to make a recommendation for the next video. could you possibly go over ledgedashing and the rising velocity of different characters? Fox rises quite fast, as to where Marth rises quite slowly. this IS relevant to ledgedashing btw, lol.
i always wondered how people moonwalk. i learned how to wave dash that's fun. :). the first smash i ever had was melee, and i didn't know there was terms for all this special stuff like when i get hit into a wall and stopping myself. i thought it was cool that i can do that. called"teching". knew how to do it, but just learned the word for it in like 2011 xD
...this is just rolling the stick across the bottom until it's facing the other way right? like it's just < v > as a rolling motion right? Because I can't get this to work for the life of me and it's really leaving me scratching my head.
To multiple moonwalk you need to learn the timing at which your dash ends, as you want to start the 2nd one just as the first dash is ending. Try to start the 2nd moonwalk as late as you possible can by trial and error, just before your character would turn. Also you can only really multimoonwalk with chars that get additional speed from moonwalk like cf.
I cant do this consistently and it makes me cry. I tried on Melee and PM. It hurts me soo. I have done hours on end in training mode trying to do this. Sigh. I have done the analog movements perfect to no avail.
Awesome vid! Is it possible to start the half-circle motion too early? I feel like I start it too early and I end up doing nothing, but maybe my motion is just wrong?
***** It's possible you're going through the center of the control stick and pivoting instead. Depends what 'doing nothing' entails exactly. But for the most part not really, as long as you're walking or dashing in one direction you can moonwalk anytmie
Stiiiil working on it; for me, I have to cut across the bottom; I'm so slow that the full half-circle just counts as a dashdance. *been trying this on-off for a while now...*
+Gandalf Becan You aren't supposed to do a half-circle; that method is very old and based on poor understanding of analog inputs that trigger dash. Instead after you dash in one direction, immediately aim directly near the bottom corner notch of the opposite direction, and roll to full opposite direction from there. So if you want to moonwalk left: dash at E, move stick straight towards SW, and roll to W from there.
+Gandalf Becan Hopefully I'm able to help :) . Another thing that isn't often mentioned is that you don't need to move your stick to full side to start the initial dash. Doing a smaller dash input makes it easier to get the stick to the opposite corner quickly. Don't wait for the control stick gate to stop the motion of the stick, change direction yourself instead.
i can do a single moonwalk, but my consistency is all fucked up. if i had 10 tries, i could probably do one that actually takes me further than my initial dash. what's going on? am i just not doing it fast enough? and what are some tips on connecting multiple moonwalks? my highest so far is 2, and it takes me about a quarter of yoshi's story for reference. is this an okay moonwalk? how hard is it to be able to get halfway across FD in 2 moonwalks?
I've been a melee player for 2 months, and I can wavedash (rarely frame perfect though), multishine, I consistently l-cancel, and I've just got the moonwalk as falco down pat. do you think I've got potential to be a good player?
want an easier better way to wavedash with falcon? Instead of going LET RIGHT really fast, go RIGHT LEFT RIGHT. It makes the moonwalk more potent Note: You still have to do that semi-circle shit on the last input
how did you get a different joystick? does it effect the controller at all, or is it just for aesthetic? also, is it tourney legal? lol sorry if these are dumb questions, just kinda new to the competitive scene
+Dracomete0r It's tourney legal, you just open up the controller and lift off the stick and put in a new one. For the most part it's aesthetic and feel, shouldn't really change that much. Sometimes the stick is a bit longer or feels different but most players really don't use it
SSBM Tutorials oh yeah, i got the general understanding of that, but the one you have in particular that seemed black, where exactly did you get it? i know that the stick helps with like smash di and shield dropping and what not, but the black control stick looks really cool and i was wondering if that one in particular had anything special about it
That's a black Wii nunchuck joystick Nothing special about it other than a different grip. Smash DI doesn't care what type of joystick you use. Some people use Playstation joysticks also. In my opinion the Gamecube version is best and most top players stick with it. Shield dropping has more to do with the shell of the controller than the joystick itself, although it's somewhat both.
hey dude can you do a video on good and bad controllers? Because I have one controller I play with that seems to dash easier. e.g. say I'm facing right and I want to dash left. My other controllers sort of just stick sometimes and get stuck in a turn around thing when I'm trying to dash dance.
Use shorter motion than half-circle. When moonwalking left, dash at E, slam the stick asap toward SW notch and roll from SW to full W. Don't do full input to dash, moving about 70% of the length will trigger a dash, and you'll be able to move stick back faster. TAS optimal input is 1 frame at E, 2 frames at SW notch, W from frame 4+. In practice you won't usually reach SW notch quickly enough, so you can start rolling toward W a bit before you reach the SW notch.
I can kind of do it but it doesn’t make my character (Ganondorf) go backwards I’m just having a bit of trouble doing a FULL half circle, I get stuck on the notch before the two on the side. It will just need some practice to get down.
Hi All, new melee player here. Im kinda... overhelmed with these tutorlias here, even tho i might get the inputs etc i dunno how to use or for what i use them. Like for example wavedashing. Inputs are no problem but ingame i dont nknow when i should wavedash etc. can someone help me pls?
A basic way to use it when you start is to fake that you're going in than wavedash back to bait a grab, tilt, etc. If your opponent react, you'll have time to get a grab or to start a combo depending on who you're playing. You also need to learn to wave land, it's basically a wavedash but upon landing on platforms or the ground
***** Mostly style, sometimes mind-games. The one actual use is to maximize horizontal distance covered with a bair since you can travel further by moonwalking into a jump than you can by simply jumping backwards from standing still. Mango does moonwalk bairs with Fox as an off-stage edgeguard very frequently.

garciakyle Do you have a video or something? It's either just running shine aerial which continues momentum or maybe they're moonwalking into a shine bair or something
SSBM Tutorials Looking for a video, can't find an example. It's running, shine, aerial which continues momentum I think cause right now when I try to do it I don't get the momentum like how I see other spacies get it. It's not wave or multi-shine. +Albert Lee It's the exact same motion. From a run you're holding to the side but you got there but moving the control stick fast, from a walk you're holding to the side, but you got there by moving the control stick slowly thats all
I don't understand how to change the direction of the moonwalk, like at 1:06. I see Westballz do it all the time and it looks so amazing, but I have no idea how to do it.
