I've lived in the south (Georgia) my whole life, and EVERYONE tells me to not move to New York because of the expenses and whatever. The thing is i've dreamed of living in New York City since i was little and i'd be really upset if i never tried. i'm living for myself which is why i WILL be moving to NYC. i'm absolutely thrilled about it.
same, I'm from south texas and first thing anyone says is "it's dirty and there are rats everywhere." so? I love big cities, I think it would be perfect for me. did you end up moving to NYC??
I’m a professional musician moving from LA to NY in October and this video really buoyed my spirits! I knew it would be brutally honest, but I didn’t think that honesty would only intensify my desire to move there. Thanks for the fantastically informative video Maya!
I moved to Chicago 5 months ago from Raleigh Nc and grew up in rural NC. Its so different here and I live alone. I enjoy my job and coworkers but haven’t really gotten involved in much else yet, especially moving here in winter and snow. Its been extremely lonely and I’ve found myself just shutting down more. Your section on how lonely it can be made me feel seen and have more hope that I’ll make friends and have a social network at some point.
I move to Jersey City next week. Hoping that the no good very bad day doesn’t happen for at least a couple months. The move in cost has left just cobwebs in my bank account and I’m not even there yet 😭
Sis. You should be compensated by the Mayor and the Governor for this. It’s a whole commercial and it feels so real. I’m from NY. Moved to Jersey to raise my family and am contemplating coming back for work opportunities. Only thing missing is the Alicia Keys & Jay-Z Empire State song at the end.
Thank you so so much for this video! I'm from the midwest and after 20 years have finally gotten my life together enough to study design at NYU and achieve my full on art hoe dreams! I am so excited 😎😎
Winter in New York… *laughs in chicago* Haha, seriously though, I moved to nyc in the winter in the middle of the of a blizzard. It was insane how long the winter lasted compared to what I was used to in the south. I loved it anyway. Chicago winters are KILLING me though! I miss New York and am seriously considering moving back.
that’s my exact plan.I’m only 15 right now but I practice everyday, I hope by the time I’m 18 I’ll be ready for clients,I wish you the best Good luck!!!!!❤️
Being from NYC, you'll find everyone's experiences and views of where to go and live are very different. A good neighborhood to one person would be horrible to the next... Like anywhere else lol
I love this so much. I've dreamed of living in a city like nyc since I was a kid. I'm turning 18 soon soon and have been contemplating if I should take the plunge and just move there. this was so insightful and honest, thank you!
@@MayaTancrede if you haven’t visited before, I deeply suggest going for a week. See if you can find an affordable Airbnb. I get an energy there that I don’t get anywhere else.
@@butterfly-pu6lm it’s just such a different energy, good and bad! A lot of New Yorkers feel entitled in a way and are pretty ruthless in how they move through the world and talk to people, and I’m pretty soft spoken so it’s not really my style. But even so, the energy is what makes me want to live there so bad! There’s constantly people around, up at all hours of the night, there’s this sense of community in that people walk everywhere. It’s just such a different atmosphere and you feel it the second you get there
One addition. Do something to make your place feel more like home. It can be something small and cheap. Just personalize it a bit. It makes a difference.
Lmao as someone from Nyc I died when u said they’ll be a bad day. This is so true and not exaggerated at all. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. I remember in January this year I was on my way to Brooklyn to get a haircut and it was sunny and 45 degrees when I left my house so I decided to go in a sweater. As soon as I get off the train it started raining and the weather had dropped to 35 degrees. I had to take the bus in Brooklyn and the bus didn’t show up for 45 minutes. Once I finally get to my barber he wasn’t even there, the dude was feeling sick and had to leave early. So I decided to go to a different barber shop in bk. The crazy didn’t stop there. I missed the bus that goes there by 5 seconds and the next one didn’t come for a half hour. It’s now 7pm and the weather had dropped to 25 but felt like 10. I was literally shaking so much. The bus finally comes. I had to take it to the last stop which is about 25 minutes but nope the bus I was on decided to get everyone off the bus bc it was the last stop somewhere else. So I had to get off the bus again and wait for the next one. At this point I told myself yep it’s one of those days. I was freezing 🥶. The next bus didn’t take long to come, it came in about 10 minutes. After that everything went fine, I got my haircut headed back home and went under my blanket. But the worst of it came the day after when I had gotten a fever prob from being out in just a sweater and to top it off I tested positive the morning after that with Covid. I was in bed with chills and fever for one week. All because of that one shitty day. But yea I wrote this out for anyone who’s interested in what a bad nyc day looks like. And yes she’s right, u gotta love living here Even through all the BS if your gonna make it here. I love it
Loved this video, you were so honest and it's great that your speaking like you are talking to a friend! I'm from the UK and considering moving to New York!! Thanks girl x
trust me, if you're a new NYC citizen you don't wanna walk slow like a tourist people in NYC don't like slow people since their tryna catch up on their destination too. I suggest to walk fast when walking :)
I might emphasize regarding living options- UPTOWN. Much more affordable than mid and down. A lot of flavor. Definitely deserves a walk-through to see the areas that you might desire. Neighborhoods in NYC Outside of Midtown and downtown can change block to block but the payoff can be great in terms of savings. All the conveniences of subway transportation are also available in these areas. You’d love these areas if you want something with a local feel. New York City is changing rapidly. Don’t be afraid of the Bronx! Same rules for uptown apply. 20 plus years in the city. Amazing city!
something to know for anyone moving here is that people leave their furniture and stuff on the side of the road to be thrown out so u can literally just take it or check craigslist you'd be surprised how many ppl give furniture away for free
Someone else may have mentioned this... but as a native New Yorker, most of us are happy to answer a question or offer an opinion, but get the rap that we're rude or curt... but if you understand that one of the most difficult thing about living in New York is constantly being bombarded with hustlers... folks trying to get something from you or out of you, then it makes you leery of someone's motives to stopping them or asking a question... but you come direct, open, and honest with your question, you'll find a good many of us happy to chat you up and give you a peek into our day-to-day
Thank you! I really needed to watch this today. I'm moving to NYC to be with my partner next year, and while I know it's still over a year away, I've been stressing about the thought of leaving my life in the southwest to be in the big city. I can't thank you enough for the advice at the end of the video. I need to actively love the city instead of being so afraid of it.
This is right. Before the 2008 collapse I would fly back and forth to NY from LA. Stay in Manhattan/East Village. I had a group of friends in the Lower East Side that gave me a bunch of advice too. The NY coat, long, wool (with pockets in front for keys, phone, subway card). Get a scarf to keep wind out. You are going to walk a lot as well.
You literally couldn’t pay me to leave Southern California so idk why I watch these videos about New York lmao, but I’m glad I watched this one! Your last two tips are exactly what I tell people about living in Cali. So many people move here (specifically to LA) thinking it’ll immediately be this fantasy life that they see in movies and when it’s not that they begin to resent all of California. It’s really hard to explain to people why we pay so much for gas and food and rent but once you realize what this place ACTUALLY is, what it has to offer, and actively choose to make this your life regardless of the bad days, it’s literally like no other place in the world. I always end up just telling people “I’m sure it’s like the hold that New York has over people, it’s probably hard for them to quantify exactly why they love it there and will never leave, but I just know they must love it the way I love Cali for them to endure what they do” This video confirmed my theory 🤙🏾
i'm moving in a few days and I just found out like yesterday so I have has so much anxiety around it and this was very blunt and helpful I will be tuning in for more!
Ive been watching nyc living vids all day ever since i got a job offer out there, this is by far the most meaningful video ive seen and im excited to see whats in store
I’ve been contemplating moving to New York for awhile now and have been super hesitant since I’ll be coming from Canada. But I feel like I might as well go and try it out! Thanks for such a helpful video!
LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!
I’ve wanted to move to NYC since I was 18 but my parents talked me out of it and I’m Now 26 and I wish I was more confident in going because I’ve wasted time
Moved from California to Manhattan NY in 2004. I've been here 17 years now. It was very difficult for me since LA and NY are complete opposite. I enjoy Soho, Lower Eastside, and Chelsea.
Maya-thank you for doing these wonderful videos! after 24 years in this town, i can honestly say you have the most candid take and realistic approach i have ever seen! I’m sure you’ve helped so many people in their transition from “new” to “native” and don’t even probably have a clue as to the difference you make! New Yorkers are actually nice and well mannered for the most part, we are just in a HURRY. Keep up the great work!
THANK YOU - I'm moving in the summer to stay with a friend in CT while I explore areas in NYC to live in. Hopefully moving to the city in the fall. What really hit me was "You will find your people but you have to put effort into it." I'm very excited to find my community. Thanks for taking the time to make this
I am planning to make the move to NY in April to study acting. This was by far one of the most helpful videos I have found on the subject of moving to NY and having realistic expectations. I plan on doing my visit in March, hopefully I find something I like and sign a lease for move in April 1st. Keep up the videos they are awesome 👏🏽
I've decided to move to NYC. When you think of a place, the videos on UA-cam just start popping up. To the list of your maps add" Here maps" they are also good. They actually work offline. Thank you for the video.
this is such a well made video and as someone who’s looking to move within the next couple months i haven’t seen a video tell me things i didn’t think i’d already heard until now. thank you so much for these tips!
Your last tip is quite possibly the most important. That lens you described is something people need to be wary of. If you are moving to NY only because of how fun it seem in movies/shows, then you are moving there for the wrong reason.
The no good very bad day thing must be real. I'm moving later this summer, and a friend I know who lives in NY for school literally described just that. They were so excited and everything went wrong... like its actually very sad and nothing i wish on anyone. But, they stayed and chose to endure it despite their depression and lack of motivation for months after. I'm truly horrified of this..., but willing to take on the challenge because my mind is made up.
I love new York and wanna move there one day and I watch so many videos everyday and yours was so genuine and real......you really really helped me and so many other people... honestly, thank you so much 💖
I'm 17 rn I've literally dreamt of visiting and then hopefully living there for years. I know it'll be hard but I'll be so much happier there then I am right now and hopefully by 20 I'll be living there
I am moving next summer and I am beyond excited but also nervous. I am most nervous about making friends because I am shy and introverted loll. This video helped me a lot thank uu
Great video! It definitely gave me a lot of information to consider, before I fully decide on anything. I've been debating internally if I really want to move to NYC for the past 3 years. But I want to be smart about moving somewhere completely new.
Australian here, im only 14 but i am doing research already to expect and prepare for the move when i make it. I plan on moving to nyc as soon as i can hopefully before im 20, i'm not sure what i would do there job wise other than professional basketball which obviously hard but i will make it happen and become a New York Knick
Planning on moving into the city. I have a really good job at my current location. Definitely saving up so I can move out comfortably and not make irrational decisions!
i don’t even really need to watch this considering i was born & raised in this city 😭 but here’s my advice as a native new yorker 1. just for all the youngings or anyone that hasn’t experienced being there or being in too many areas of the city it is NOT as glamorous as u may think or as the media portrays, i can’t speak for the what i call the “rich areas” of the city such as the ones she mentions which are mostly in manhattan & what it’s like living in those neighborhoods considering i’m from harlem which is predominantly black/hispanic & lower class also where u would most likely witness most of the bs that makes new york new york lol but ur most likely to find a decent if not pretty nice apt from $1000-$2000 max for rent in areas far uptown, in the bronx, deeper brooklyn & the outskirts of queens & usually that includes gas, hot water & other amenities wanting to live in glamorous places is going to take glamorous people money.. also i personally advocate for having a car considering getting some places on the subway is NOT it during winter & those cold rains, ubers, lyfts & taxis cost an arm & a leg in the city & the train is unpredictable sometimes there’s train traffic, delays, construction, rerouted trains, difference between weekend & weekday service, after hour riding etc.. for fucks sake the L train which runs every 20 min in manhattan & 10 mins in brooklyn which goes to show it is is very frequently used went under almost an entire year of construction due to hurricane sandy damages so yes, i advise investing into a car or learning how to take the buses as well, ALSO nyc is legit bordered by the atlantic ocean, the hudson river, east river, harlem river & so yes, the rain here is usually terrible. lastly don’t listen to the stereotypes that the all the people here are mean i promise you there’s some good folks here, ik lots of people move to the city from more suburban & rural areas so it may be a lot to get used to but this is a city full of wonders & i’m proud to call it home lol.
So I have a question I feel like I'm going to like driving in the future should I get a car in New York or is it a bad Idea I heard theres so much traffic!
what a great video! so comprehensive and straight to the point. i’m thinking of moving to nyc sometime in the future for school, so i’ve liked and bookmarked it for future reference. thank you so much!

I'm planning on moving there next year when hopefully covid is over (enough)😖 I was planning on moving this year but I was so worried about not being able to find a job when the pandemic hit so I'm in my same city. I've been saving for over 2 years now and have more than enough but for me the scary part is the actual moving process and being able to find a job 😬 From watching a lot of these types of videos it seems like loneliness is one of the biggest things you have to deal with as well as not having a car for errands (if you're used to that). I really like how you don't sugar coat this though 😄

@Mank Hobley What’s the music scene like other than jazz? I’m also a musician wanting to move there. Not for music, but it’s my main hobby.
When I worked in NYC the subway was very intimidating but apps certainly help!! Great video young lady
i like how im watching these like im about to move to nyc or something
Am glad I discovered this page. Am budgeting for my move to NYC next year and I needed this clear and precise information .
So glad it was helpful!
AH thank you 🥺
Thank you so so much for this video! I'm from the midwest and after 20 years have finally gotten my life together enough to study design at NYU and achieve my full on art hoe dreams! I am so excited 😎😎
I'm moving to NYC in 2022 like in January all alone and it's my dream coming true I'm so happy like waiting for the time to pass quickly
Winter in New York… *laughs in chicago*
Haha, seriously though, I moved to nyc in the winter in the middle of the of a blizzard. It was insane how long the winter lasted compared to what I was used to in the south. I loved it anyway. Chicago winters are KILLING me though! I miss New York and am seriously considering moving back.
I'm currently 17, but my goal is to be a full time tattoo artist and moving to NYC by the time I'm 21
just to let you know new york isn’t sun shine. people steal , fight for no reason shoot etc... i been here for my 18 years

That’s exactly what I wanna do!!
Being from NYC, you'll find everyone's experiences and views of where to go and live are very different. A good neighborhood to one person would be horrible to the next... Like anywhere else lol
I love this so much. I've dreamed of living in a city like nyc since I was a kid. I'm turning 18 soon soon and have been contemplating if I should take the plunge and just move there. this was so insightful and honest, thank you!
you got this❤️
@@MayaTancrede if you haven’t visited before, I deeply suggest going for a week. See if you can find an affordable Airbnb. I get an energy there that I don’t get anywhere else.
@@iamawesomeprods Is it a bad or good energy?

I love it
classic hahaha at least we can laugh about it now
Wow , your bad day sounds terrible.. 🤭
You must reminisce and laugh at it now. Thx for sharing!! 😊
Loved this video, you were so honest and it's great that your speaking like you are talking to a friend!
I'm from the UK and considering moving to New York!! Thanks girl x
so glad you liked it :)
trust me, if you're a new NYC citizen you don't wanna walk slow like a tourist people in NYC don't like slow people since their tryna catch up on their destination too.
Amazing city!
totally agree!!! uptown is underrated. so many great restaurants too
something to know for anyone moving here is that people leave their furniture and stuff on the side of the road to be thrown out so u can literally just take it or check craigslist you'd be surprised how many ppl give furniture away for free
It’s like moving to a new school, you’ll adapt and adjust!
Ím moving to NYC within two weeks. Six years are waiting for me in the city without knowing a single soul in the city. Thanks for the video!
How is it going?
Great video! I also moved to NYC alone to work for a fashion ad agency. What a wild ride that was....!! Happy New Year to all x
How’s it going?! Was it hard to get into the agency?
Someone else may have mentioned this... but as a native New Yorker, most of us are happy to answer a question or offer an opinion, but get the rap that we're rude or curt... but if you understand that one of the most difficult thing about living in New York is constantly being bombarded with hustlers... folks trying to get something from you or out of you, then it makes you leery of someone's motives to stopping them or asking a question... but you come direct, open, and honest with your question, you'll find a good many of us happy to chat you up and give you a peek into our day-to-day
This is true I’m a native NYer and I totally agree with this.
Yes exactly not everyone is mean or rude
Thank you! I really needed to watch this today. I'm moving to NYC to be with my partner next year, and while I know it's still over a year away, I've been stressing about the thought of leaving my life in the southwest to be in the big city. I can't thank you enough for the advice at the end of the video. I need to actively love the city instead of being so afraid of it.
good luck with the move, you got this!!
Me tooooooo!!!
The “go anyway” tip is so good for moving to any new place or even after a breakup
I had a dream I moved to nyc now im up binge watching moving to nyc videos 🤗
This is right. Before the 2008 collapse I would fly back and forth to NY from LA. Stay in Manhattan/East Village. I had a group of friends in the Lower East Side that gave me a bunch of advice too. The NY coat, long, wool (with pockets in front for keys, phone, subway card). Get a scarf to keep wind out. You are going to walk a lot as well.
long coats save lives. also beanies & the gloves that allow you to type on your phone lol
I always end up just telling people
“I’m sure it’s like the hold that New York has over people, it’s probably hard for them to quantify exactly why they love it there and will never leave, but I just know they must love it the way I love Cali for them to endure what they do”
This video confirmed my theory 🤙🏾
i'm moving in a few days and I just found out like yesterday so I have has so much anxiety around it and this was very blunt and helpful I will be tuning in for more!

I'm moving in 1 month, and I'm scared and excited at the same time. This video was very informative. Thank you.

I like the way you did this video it was straight to point I LOVE IT!
Thank you SO much!!

I’m sure you’ve helped so many people in their transition from “new” to “native” and don’t even probably have a clue as to the difference you make! New Yorkers are actually nice and well mannered for the most part, we are just in a HURRY.
Keep up the great work!
this is so sweet thank you!!!!!

Welcome to the greatest city in the world. You are about to experience the time of your life.
I’m scared of going broke in a big city 😭 n finding no job when I get there

You definitely want to get the job first before you move.
Don't even consider moving without having a job secured first.
If you don’t want to end on the streets you need to HAVE a secured source of income
Good place to network but good luck saving any money unless you're making at least 100k a year and even still will take a lot of discipline to save.
Thanks! Actually the only informative video until now
To say I appreciate you is an understatement!
I am considering moving from ca to ny and you provided much needed topics to consider!!
idk but we can tell how genuine this video was, thank you sm!

Coming from Cali, $4000 to move in is low. I thought you'd say more 😂
Planning on moving into the city.
This video is very informative. This really helps me a lot. Thanks ❤
