  • Neil Gaiman 's highly acclaimed novel, American Gods has finally been adapted into a TV series by the Starz Network. With the first episode premiering in a few days, I thought this might be a good time to go over the mythology behind some of the gods, spirits, mythical creatures and deities who will appear in the show. The Norse God, Wednesday, the Leprechaun, Mad Sweeney, The Spider Spirit, Mr Nancy, The Slavic Demon, Chernobog, and the others, all have fascinating backstories and mythologies, from a number of different cultures around the world. And yet, they all ended up in the good old U. S. of A. As for the New Gods, Technical Boy, Mr. World and Media. I did not feature them in this video, but if you would like me to do a video about them as well, let me know in the comments below.
So, Let's take a look at the myths and stories that inspired Neil Gaiman's novel.
If you would like to give some insight into any of the characters or mythology in this video, the American Gods novel, or the series, please do so in the comments below.

I met Neil Gaiman the day Michael Jackson died. I know that’s random but it was at his soon to be wife’s concert. He was by himself propped up on a wall checking his phone. No one else went up to him. I think he was intimidating. I began to talk to him about writing. Saying that i was starting university for writing soon. He was really nice, i mean he wasn’t very talkative but he gave me 5 minutes of his time and gave me some good advice. I asked what makes a good writer and he said it takes being a good reader to write. I asked him quickly if sandman was ever getting a movie and he said that’s what he was doing in LA. That was 2009 and I’m still waiting. At least American Gods got made!

ChronicCold Warner brothers has the film rights but Neil was being brought in as a consultant and a writer since it’s his own IP. They were bringing him in on the project. It’s not like his show Good Omens where he is show runner. Just saying.

Its mind boggling when you realize that Mad Sweeney is also Pornstache from Orange is the New Black. How they came to the idea that Mendez should play basically the physical embodiment of Irish/Scottish folklore and legend is a real mystery. But they made a shockingly great choice.

She would have us clap out our names to teach us rhythm and to this day, I remember the words to song about Anansi she taught us “the Brave Spider Man”. About Bilques, in the book there is a reference to her alter/bedside table, where there is a statue thats description is similar to the Venus of Willendorf and other "venus sculptures" made by the people of ice age Europe. I always imagined her as that ancient nameless goddess. She's my favorite.

    • @lady8jane
      @lady8jane 7 років тому +10

She probably is a remnant of a pre-Judaic religion and many think that the Queen of Sheba actually is an old mother goddess / fertility goddess. Hence the connection to prostitution as temple prostitution was not uncommon among the fertility cults in the Levant. Ishtar would be an example here.

sarah fin Well, I was confused also because in the tv series they kept showing the sculpture of the goddess Inanna who represents fertility, sex, beauty, desire, war, combat and political power whereas in the book I don't believe there was any mention of her(do correct me if I'm wrong, it's been several years since I've read the book). I mean, it still makes sense but you know, it did take a different turn. But I guess it doesn't really matter since she can be any one of the goddesses.

Wrong. Calcutta comes from Kalikatta which means 'land of Kali'.
Kalighat is an area in South Calcutta where Maa Kali's temple is located. Bhog (holy offering) is cooked there which often consists of some rice dish and mutton curry. Which later is distributed among visitors and poor people who often lurk outside the temple for some food.
Yes, non-veg, because in Bengali culture she's considered to be married.
Also the fact that she's the goddess of both death & blood (life), making her rule over both dominions in Bengali Hinduism.

Hello Everyone. I hope you enjoyed the first episode of American Gods. I definitely did.
I really like the direction they're going with it, and I'm excited to see where they go next. I have to admit I was surprised by some of the changes from the source material. Some changes I didn't fully understand, for instance the opening scene with the Norse explorers is different in the novel, and I prefer the novel version much better, but aside from that I can understand why they made most of changes they did. At least this will keep the people who have read the novel on their toes.
The direction and cinematography were stellar, but to me the most impressive aspect of the episode was the acting. Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle put in especially great performances, and the rest of the cast was also very impressive.
I wanted to do a video review of this episode, but I got to it too late, and at this point it's been covered by many channels on youtube. I will make a follow up video to this video at some point , and reveal more of the mythology behind the gods in the novel and series. So stay subbed for that.
BTW, what did you think of the episode?

You're right. I just went over it again.
I was going by this line:
"Well,” said Mr. Ibis, smiling just a little smugly, “we go back a very long way. Of course, it wasn’t until after the War Between the States that we found our niche here. That was when we became the funeral parlor for the colored folks hereabouts"
But in the line you're referring to Mr. Ibis does describe how the ancient Egyptians journeyed to America around 1530 BC to trade and remarks:
"The whole thing was rather a disappointment. Not worth the effort.
They stayed here long enough to believe in us, to sacrifice to us, and for a handful of the traders to die of fever and be buried here, leaving us behind them."
So yeah, my line was inaccurate. I wanted to add an annotation to correct it but youtube recently stopped allowing those.

Slavic mythology has two key differences from the well-known Greek and Roman mythologies. First, many of the spirits are still part of common images and folktales among Slavic people. Secondly, the old Slavic pantheon of gods is not well documented, so scholars have attempted to recreate the information based on secondary documents. Still, the pantheon is fascinating and worth knowing.
Chernobog (Czarnobóg in Polish) was one of the more theoretical gods of the Slavic pantheon. It is nearly impossible to find source material for him, and most secondary material comes from Christian sources. The first known record of Chernobog came from the writings of Father Helmold, a German priest, in the 12th century. According to Helmold, the Slavic people engaged in rituals surrounding Chernobog, including passing bowls around a circle and whispering prayers to protect themselves from him. From Helmold’s writings, scholars have learned that Chernobog was the personification of evil . He wore a dark cloak and appeared to be a devil. Evidence of Chernobog is also seen in common South Slavic countries phrases. The phrase "do zla boga "literally means “go to the evil god” and is a curse. Other instances of the term “evil god” are used as an intensifier for adjectives. This structure in Slavic languages supports the idea that early Slav phrases used Chernobog as a conceptual influence.

Very true, though for starters, it's intellectually pretty ambitious, and the whole concept of the show must be sorta 'blasphemous' for a lotta True Believers of the 'Judaeo-Christian' persuasion... many of whom already freak out over tamer ideas like Yoga and Astrology. I read a lot of comments of people bitching about nonsense (skin color of the depicted gods) and then I stumbled over the comment of one sane guy named "rick rick". I feel like his comment is not getting enough attention, therefore I will post it again:
"The American gods book states CLEARLY that the gods vary by who worships them. This very video and the book CLEARLY states that African Americans are the ones that are worshiping Thoth and Anubis in America. They look like them then.
For instance the American Odin looks nothing like the actual Norse Odin and there are multiple versions of him in Ireland/Eastern Europe/Scandinavia.
The queen of sheba is widely thought of as either Southern Arabian or Ethiopian. Multiple European sources make her Ethiopian and dark skinned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_Sheba
Granted the actress who is playing her is Nigerian and doesn't look like a Ethiopian but considering the gods vary on who worships them and African Americans are probably the ones who made this version of her so she looks west african. There is probably a Ethiopian one and A Southern Arabian one in the books universe."
Now y'all shut the fuck up with your discussions about gods who were worshipped by people who lived like 2000 or 3000 years ago. You can't possibly know for certain how those people looked like, thus the discussion over this is obsolete.

Fanation Thank you for doing the due diligence research to bring us this wonderfully crafted video. The show peaked my interest with the snippets of the show before releasing, but your video has assured that I will now watch the show. I also have an appreciation of your subtle but clear source citing from all of the materials you referenced in the video. I hope you do follow-up videos of the other Old Gods and then a separate piece on the New Gods. As I explained in a response to someone else's comment, channels like Emergency Awesome are just quick info on shows & movies, not a whole lot of in-depth analysis. Anyone can do a show like that with a little bit of homework on the internet. But what you've presented here, my friend, THIS is what I'm all about! Deeply explained ideology of a movie or show's premise, so you understand the concept / the whole point of what you're watching. You gave great facts, good editing, and superb timing / tempo on your delivery of the information. Keep up the great work! You've just EARNED a new subscriber!

Very through. Minor correction: in the novel, Ibis tells Shadow that they came to America a *very* long time ago, with traders from Egypt. (They weren't trading much, there wasn't much to trade.) It wasn't until after the civil war that people began to think of them as "black folk". My sense is that Gaiman intended for the Egyptian crew to have been among the first foreign gods in America, and thus the ones who watched all the others arrive, allowing Ibis to write the Coming to America stories.

    • @hollowyahmesu5391

Reppin Seattle 79 Its because Egypt real name is Kemet meaning black nation. The Kemetic people say they come from south Of kemet that's in Ta Seti AKA Nubia and the Nubians say they came from the land of punt which is in Somalia and they say they came from South Africa the pyramid the Ankh the horus bird statue all came from south Africa First and they migrated to east then north And beside Egypt is in Africa LOL

    • @Carewolf
      @Carewolf 6 років тому +20

Because most ancient egyptions were a Semitic people like Arabs and Jews, they also made a distinction for nubians which conquered Egypt at one point, and painted those black instead of yellow. So the ancient egyptions thought themselves non-black, and the people south of them as black.

More more more! Great work! Found this, AMERICAN GODS, in a take one, give one bookcase in Thailand 2008, I was there for 12 week stay. Loved it so much I was sad to put it down. Most amazingly unexpected find in Thailand second only to volunteering/livein for a week at baby elephant rescue & reserve in Chaing Mai. I could have stayed a month but it’s booked months in advance and $250-$300 a week. Pure love, play, adventure unlike anything I have ever experienced.

I always thought that Mad Sweeney, while he calls himself a leprechaun, was the god *Lugh Lamhfada* and the etymology of names changing over time, which I think is part of the origins of the leprechaun. This further gets support that the ancient Irish gods/goddesses retreat to the mounds becoming *The People of the Mounds* which is interesting that that phrase is loosely used in *A Prayer for Mad Sweeney.* Not to mention Lugh Lamhfada was a godlike king and his later name loosely translates to *long hand,* but I am more home to the name *Lonnbéimnech* (or "Fierce Striker") which mostly relates to Mad Sweeney as his fighting on the show is rather fierce.

The original Sweeney was a pagan king cursed to wander with madness by St. Ronan. But I agree about Lugh being the origin of the leprechaun because they are depicted as shoemakers and Lugh's Welsh counterpart Lleu is also a shoemaker, while the ancient Celtic shoemakers of Spain also followed Lugh as their god. In Gallo-Roman France Lugh was identified with Mercury (the god) and had bags of money like the leprechaun's treasure which was often in a pouch rather than a crock. I think maybe Gaiman was saying that the original Sweeney being one of Ireland's last pagan kings personifies Lugh as that god was intimately connected with kingship rites in ancient times.

In the books he wasn’t Lugh and the fact he ended up being Lugh in the show is rather irritating to me because they are 2 completely different people in mythology and although I love Mad Sweeney’s character what he does and how he acts is not really in line with Lugh of the longhand IMO. Also Lugh was not Godlike he was a god father of the Demi god Cú Chulainn one of the if not the most famous people in Irish mythology
