I was in the mood for a sleepy melodramatic movie and this movie seemed to fit the bill. For the first half hour of the show, I was tempted to find something else to watch because the cinematography to this movie seemed a bit amateurish and low budget, sort of like a B movie. Fortunately, the TV remote was across the room, and I was too lazy to get up and get it, so I laid there on the couch watching this movie play out…and boy I am I glad I did because after about a half hour or so this movie thoroughly had my interest. Without giving anything away, this movie is about a single mother whose life is destroyed by her alcoholism. I found myself fearing for this woman, cheering for this woman, and hoping all the while that she could muster the strength to overcome her alcoholism once and for all. Some of the scenes are tough to watch, but are necessary to show how destructive alcoholism can be, not only to the alcoholic, but also to their family and friends too. This movie is sort of like Leaving Las Vegas except that it takes place in a small rural town somewhere in Texas rather than Las Vegas. After watching this movie, I believe this actress should have won the Academy Award for Best Actress as her performance in this movie is that good. There is a part near the end of the movie where she is standing on a back porch alone debating on what to do. The movie purposely omits the “talking out loud to oneself” or the “mental narration” just so the audience knows what the character is thinking and instead relies solely on the actress’s own facial expressions to communicate to the audience what she is thinking. You can actually see her wavering back and forth though she says nothing at all. Brilliant! Admittedly the cinematography isn't great, the story line leaves a lot to be desired, and the director takes some obvious shortcuts which unfortunately makes this movie a four-star movie rather than a five-star movie. That said, this movie is a must watch based on Andrea Riseborough's performance alone.
