Thank you for this movie. My mother was an alcoholic who caused incredible pain. Thankfully she was able to stop hurting herself and others as she got older before she passed. Andrea was stunning in the way she was able to portray the complexities of the character, but also the culture in which she existed. Great movie.

Andrea Riseborough is an exceptional Actress. I have watched her movies over the last several years. She steals every scene she is in. The raw performance that she delivers is a text book on display to evoke emotion that is so fulfilling as a viewer and so inspirational as human being. I hope the Academy recognizes her gift to an industry that brings so much hope and wonder to a society that needs an outlet to all we have evolved to become! On a side note, I once had lunch with her and she is an amazing storyteller!

Now, I have no doubt she's fine in the movie because Andrea Riseborough is one of those actresses who is physically incapable of giving a bad performance, even when the movie she's part of is awful, but from what I've seen in clips and trailers, this comes off like another "Still Alice", another generic movie about despair that's elevated by a solid performance.

Finally a good movie! After watching several stinkers in the past few months (Avatar, A Man named Otto, Everything everywhere all at one, All quiet on the western front, You People) I was losing hope.
But today I watched this film and my faith in cinema is restored.
This is a wonderful little gem about a woman (played superbly by Andrea Riseborough) who is trying to get her life back together. She blew a lot of lottery winnings on her substance abuse problems. Abandoned her teenage son and struggles with unemployment and homelessness.
But a man (played very well by Marc Maron) at a local motel takes pity on her and gives her a job and helps her get back on her own two feet.
Excellent screenplay and acting by a strong cast. Made with a very small budget, 'To Leslie' proves you don't need to spend a lot of money to make effective films.
. . . and YES, Andrea Riseborough most definitely deserves her Academy Award nomination for this role. It is so wonderful when AMPAS gets it right and acknowledges truly deserving actresses, rather than this affirmation action / token / pity nominations they have been handing out on recent years.

It's not really "grassroots" if the director and his wife are industry veterans who've worked with almost all of the actors singing Riseborough's performance to the high heavens (and less so when they all share the same talent representation), not to mention a tad tone deaf when one or two of the performance's champions specifically cites two Black actresses as "assured" when they should know first hand from experience that nothing is assured.

I was in the mood for a sleepy melodramatic movie and this movie seemed to fit the bill. For the first half hour of the show, I was tempted to find something else to watch because the cinematography to this movie seemed a bit amateurish and low budget, sort of like a B movie. Fortunately, the TV remote was across the room, and I was too lazy to get up and get it, so I laid there on the couch watching this movie play out…and boy I am I glad I did because after about a half hour or so this movie thoroughly had my interest. Without giving anything away, this movie is about a single mother whose life is destroyed by her alcoholism. I found myself fearing for this woman, cheering for this woman, and hoping all the while that she could muster the strength to overcome her alcoholism once and for all. Some of the scenes are tough to watch, but are necessary to show how destructive alcoholism can be, not only to the alcoholic, but also to their family and friends too. This movie is sort of like Leaving Las Vegas except that it takes place in a small rural town somewhere in Texas rather than Las Vegas. After watching this movie, I believe this actress should have won the Academy Award for Best Actress as her performance in this movie is that good. There is a part near the end of the movie where she is standing on a back porch alone debating on what to do. The movie purposely omits the “talking out loud to oneself” or the “mental narration” just so the audience knows what the character is thinking and instead relies solely on the actress’s own facial expressions to communicate to the audience what she is thinking. You can actually see her wavering back and forth though she says nothing at all. Brilliant! Admittedly the cinematography isn't great, the story line leaves a lot to be desired, and the director takes some obvious shortcuts which unfortunately makes this movie a four-star movie rather than a five-star movie. That said, this movie is a must watch based on Andrea Riseborough's performance alone.
