- In Part 1 of this series about how to film and photograph Buzzards and other small birds I am at my local Woodland to build a perch for Buzzards and other small birds local to my area. The equipment I use for bird photography and filming in the film includes my Nikon D500 and Nikon Z6 with Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and Sigma 150-600 C lenses alongside my Atomos Ninja V and Zoom H6 audio recorder. I also use my Nitehawk photography hide, ThreeLeggedThing Mike and Benro Mach3 Tripods.
That was great and I do like the Nitehawk hide out. I remember in 2019 in Colorado driving over a railway somewhere in the mountains and missed the sound of one of these amazing freight trains pass by. I thought I could just wait for the next one. Well, after five hours I moved on. Maybe I couldn't record the train, but I spent a nice summer evening in the wild. :)
i think when our subject dioesn't turn up we've just got to sit back and be grateful that we are there. Did you get the train eventually?
@@TheDevonOutdoorsman True. Not there but I do released a huge USA train sound library from other areas.
Great work! Following your channel now. 🙂
Thanks very much and I really appreciate the follow 👍
Hours and hours of sitting in the cold waiting and watching ‘ I can relate to all u are doing ‘ keep positive ‘ the drone footage was very good ‘ u will be rewarded ‘
Hi Martin, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yup, lots of waiting. Unfortunately I think that location is too public, the Buzzards are certainly in the right area but with so many people using the common at the moment they aren’t keen to come down. I’ve another couple of options I’m planning for. Thanks for the encouragement 👍
Hi Martin, I’m going for attempt number two tomorrow. I’ve just been and set up the hide in the dark and erect a perch. I’ve upscaled the bait this time so we will wait and see what happens. Different location. 🤞
@@TheDevonOutdoorsman good idea to move to a quite location ‘ I built a wooden hide and have it set up on the farm ‘ I left out some sheep carcass and the Foxes 🦊 came and devoured the lot under the cover of darkness 🙁’ fortunately I got some nice jay images ‘ so ime waiting on buzzard ‘ red squirrels ‘ pine marten and woodpecker ‘ it’s going to be a long year of sitting 😬
I’ve not left the bait overnight. I was concerned it would freeze and also I forgot my cable ties to stop the foxes taking it 🙄 sounds like you’ve got an ideal set-up. Snow is forecast for tomorrow so my Hokki 3 will hopefully keep me nice and warm.
I’m on private land tomorrow and have the whole day. I know there are buzzards there as have seen them so as long as the new appearance of a perch doesn’t spook them we could be lucky. How fa away from your hide is your bait normally?
Great watch Rich and really nice editing.Love the drone footage too.Looking forward to part 2.Good to see your over 100 subs already.
Best wishes..Jamie
Hey Jamie, your comment went into the folder for review for some reason and I have only just seen it. Thanks mate. Hope all is well with you. 👍
Great work !! Passion will win in the end ! Look forward to supporting you on your channel!! Take care 👍👍
Thanks mate, I really appreciate that. I hope you are well and staying safe.
Great video mate, really enjoyed watching this
Cheers pal. A shame I didn’t get anything but hopefully when the birds are more used to it they’ll start coming in. 👍
@@TheDevonOutdoorsman definitely mate! Took a kingfisher a few days to get used to a perch I put down for it. It's all worth it in the end
“If you build it....”
Hi buddy, really enjoyed that vlog! nice one 👌have a new subscriber 😉...... JP
hi JP, thanks for watching and subscribing! I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the video. I am currently filming Pt2 so keep an eye out. So far it's been two days in the hide at a different location and still no buzzards. I saw them and heard them this morning but they stayed away from the lens. We shall persevere!!
Great footage I think you might be better feed it for a few weeks first and keep a trail cam on it. It's also a good idea to get in the hide before day break best of luck mate
Hey Bernard, thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree with you. I’m letting the perch get a bit more established before trying again. I had my trail cam on it for a week but no joy. I think the fact there’s a lot of dog walkers in the area will likely put the buzzards off. They are definitely in the area. I saw them soaring above today and earlier in the week. There’s a lot of open farmland surrounding the common so they tend to stay on the outskirts I’ve noticed. It’s not somewhere I’d usually try for the reasons I mention but lockdown is restricting how far I can travel obviously. I’ll keep it there though and have another go in a short while. I can’t really leave a big bait there like a pheasant because of the dogs.
Well done Rich, enjoyed the reality that not every outing is a winner. I enjoy the way you present your content. Keep it up the sub numbers will come.
Thank you Keith, I really appreciate your words. Wildlife is an unpredictable beast as we know but I l’m loving getting out there and seeing what happens with the channel right now. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. The GreenWoodpecker is up next 👍
Beautiful movie 👍
I’m very pleased you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. 👊
Nice work Rich, and well done on hitting 100 Subs, you’ll keep climbing I’m sure of it. All the best R 👍
Thanks Rich, much appreciated. I need to watch the 2nd part of your Harrier film which I’ll do tomorrow. Really enjoyed the first part and how typical is it to get something right at the end! Yup I’m pleased to break the 100 mark but still can’t get that blimmin custom URL for some reason. All the best to you too 👍
Great video, what’s the opening music called?
hi there, thanks for watching. I'll be honest I cannot recall the name of the music or the artist. I subscribe to SoundStripe so it will be have been one I found on there. Sorry I cannot give you the answer to your question.
Calls it lock down, but are in wide open public area 😬 since you stated lock down, I was expecting garden photography 😬
If I'd have been doing a video about garden photography I'd most likely have called it something along the lines of....."garden photography"..you seem to enjoy criticising my videos for some reason, care to explain why?
Well done, great vid! Did I hear an owl at 09:28/9?
Thank you very much! I don't think there were any owls but I'll go back and have a listen.
ha ha well noticed! now you've got me thinking.....
@@TheDevonOutdoorsman I look forward to some more of your awesome owl photography :0)
How is your detail at such distance?
Hi Thomas, I don’t have any other long lens to compare to the Sigma (150-600 C) but I find that it produces images with a good level of detail at this distance. I’d probably say that this distance is when it performs at its best. It does lose detail at long distance but nothing that cannot be repaired using eg Topaz. I hope this helps, please feel free to ask any other questions. Thanks for watching. Rich
Mmm… nice footage but unfortunately the buzzard never showed up. I do digiscoping, filming wildlife through a birdscope, no hide no camouflage no waiting just walking/cycling by… point and shoot😀have a look on my channel…cheers
Hey Ron, I'll certainly check it out. Sounds interesting.
