  • David and Ryan are joined by fellow writer-collector (director-collector?) and Blade Runner obsessive (and expert!) Steve Loter, the executive producer and director of Marvel's Emmy-winning animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur! Steve talks with the guys about his 40+ years of movie madness and collecting that began at age 11 when he saw Blade Runner for the first time and identified with the ennui of the tired, drunk, and disenfranchised Rick Deckard. He tells them all he knows about Blade Runner's buried treasure, where it's gone since, his past and present interactions with the crew, and what he knows about the fabled Deckard trenchcoat. Time to die!

In 1983 when I was a young commercial director at Robert Abel & Associates (famous for elaborate animation and VFX for tv commercials and some of the CG for Tron) a ¾” dub of Bladerunner was being constantly played in the art department. All the artists were big fans, so much so that Jordan Cronenweth was hired to shoot the Chevy Corvette ad campaign we did in-house.

the game. I want the white bathrobe Tyrell was killed in. A very close childhood friend bought it from a Collectors Bookstore monthly auction 40 years ago. I have no idea where it is now. He passed away 10 years ago.

What a wealth of knowledge. You get lots of fantastic guests, but Steve really does seem to justify a "please write a book" plea.
I'd want Rachael's black suit dress. I've visited the one at MoPop in Seattle; curious if there were known multiples or if that's thought to be 1 of 1.

It is rumored to be 1 of 1. I haven't seen any verified proof of this, but the costumes were surprisingly made in small quantities.

@@sloter3254 Thanks! I was floored seeing the Rachael dress in-person. Funny enough, I went to see the opening of 2049 immediately after, so as soon as the fake Rachael walked out, I was like "that's wrong!" I've been curious ever since whether it was purposefully inaccurate; I hope so.

As an avid BR collector myself I still would like to have the hero blaster. I have an original police / black rubber version and a pretty decent replica but would love to have the original which is in Dan’s collection.

What ? No mention of the Voight-Kampff machine. That would be my dream item from Bladerunner.

it is rumored that the Voight Kampff machine was dissembled and used as the 2nd version of the Esper device in Deckard's apartment. The Esper sequence was filmed twice.

@sloter3254 Didn't they have to cobble together a replacement Voight Kampff for pickup shots later which had different sized screens to the original? Possibly because they had pulled the original apart and the pickups were in the UK?

Maybe this should be obvious, but what is the yellow circular artifact behind Steve?

It's set dressing that was used throughout the film. You can see it on cars, buildings and most famously on the background during the 'tears in rain' sequence. The mold of this was previously used in Alien. I think Ridley really liked it!

@@sloter3254 Ah, got it. I see it is indeed there in the background of tears in rain. I'll have to keep an eye out elsewhere on my next watch. Very cool.
