  • Canon R5 Mark II is set to be announced/released in 2024 and here are some of the things I would love to see in the upgraded R5 Mark II. Beyond specs the original R5 is a fantastic camera but there are a few things I would love to see improved/fixed as a hybrid shooter.

    What features do you need/want in the Canon R5 II?

    • @0ecka
      @0ecka 3 місяці тому +2

      Higher image quality (not lower with a million frames per second), 16-bit RAW, lower base ISO (like ISO 50 or 25), built-in SSD storage, same type memory card slots (double CFX-B), , zero buttons on the left side of the camera, every possible feature for stills and timelapses, and ... I had more, but I can't remember now 😊 45mp is still great, but if it can do 85mp without any major drawbacks, then bring it on )) And it better shoot 12K oversampled 8K videos then )).

    I want a fast, stacked sensor and no-blackout EVF. The no-blackout EVF of the R3 makes all the difference in the world for fast-moving targets and birds in flight. I don't need or want more than 45MP.

    I want two options related to continuous shooting. 1. Option to not shoot until flash is ready. 2. Set the frame rate for continuous shooting; lots of times I want 5 frames per second, not 15 or 20.

      @RickyCheung  3 місяці тому

      Hmm.... first time I heard someone mention battery life on the R5. I had mine almost since launch and the batteries have degraded overtime but still not an issue for me. 2x max per wedding or 1-2x per day out shooting. I would love a full side HDMI but it currently doesn't bother me, not secure I know but I also use the cable lock mech.

      @@RickyCheung You notice it more if you've shot an R3. Plus, assume the R5 II has a larger sensor, better EVF, pre-buffer, etc. All of those things consume battery life. If they go with active cooling? More battery usage. To keep this short - I think you're going to appreciate the upgraded battery, or wish Canon had included one.

  • @JaredRibic

    I have both the R5 and R3 bodies. I'm hybrid as well, shooting about 75% photo and 25% video for weddings.
    I completely agree about the ergonomics of the R5 (and the R3 is even better), and also have issues with angle of the flip-out LCD screen. I hope Canon does what Sony did with theirs.
    Resolution of 45MP is fine for me, but I'm also happy with the 24MP of the R3 (although I wish it was 35MP).
    *Dual CFx slots* - Now that CFx cards are getting cheaper, I'd be cool with dual CFx slots.
    *RECORD LIMIT* - Still can't understand why Canon hasn't done a firmware update to the R5 to remove the 30-minute record limit. My girl now shoots with my R5 bodies, and I needed to add a third body to my setup for video. I didn't want to buy a third R3 body, but wanted something that was comparable to the R5, but without the 30-minute record limit. I thought about the R6 Mk2, and it would have worked, except it doesn't record 4K DCI. So I ended up trading in a ton of my old Canon DSLR bodies and lenses and picked up a used R3 body. Now I have a third R3 body to use when shooting video.
    *IBIS wobble* - This prevents me from using the RF 15-25mm f/2.8L IS at 15mm. I hope Canon can fix this issue.
    *Punch-in while recording* - I often use the "movie crop" feature to get a little extra reach from my lenses, and wish I could customize a button to enable/disable this while recording video. Instead, I have to stop recording, dive into the menu to turn it on/off. I keep the menu ready so I can do it quickly, but still, it would be a welcome update.
    What I'm really waiting for (more than an R5 Mk2) is the R1 body, and of course the RF 35mm f/1.2L.
    I've had an ongoing "Canon wishlist" ever since the 5D Mk3. Most of it is photo-related, but I'm doing more video lately, so I'm adding a few video items to it also.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks you. I thought I was the only one with the LCD not being square when flipped out, LOL.
      I rocked the 1dx years ago and the heft wasn't worth the vertical grip even though we are magically shooting more vertical these days, haha! It was a tank however but I handle my gear with care, most of the time.
      Interesting point on the R3 I'm wondering why not the R5C as your pick for the video centric but still capable photo camera?
      Record limit is soo doable via firmware as some video agreement once set has expired but yea that's canon. I was ready to pick up an R5c as my main video focused camera but I will see what the R5II offers.
      Thanks for your input. cool.

      Oh and here I am still holding on to my beloved EF35mm 1.4L. hehe!

    • @JaredRibic
      @JaredRibic 3 місяці тому +1

      @@RickyCheung - The R3 isn't as heavy as the 1D-series DSLRs, in fact it's lighter than the R5 with a battery grip.
      I don't do enough video to justify a video-centric (or non-weather-sealed) body like the R5C, so it made more sense for me to get a used R3 for my third body. For certain photography events, I roam around with two R3 bodies, and have a third body set up in a tethered studio setting (all at the same event). I had been using one of the R5 bodies for the studio setup, but my girl uses both of those now, and I like the R3 much better (even with less resolution).
      Now if she has a wedding, on the same day that I have a wedding where I'm doing video instead of photo, I don't need to take an R5 body from her. I only use two bodies when shooting photo (other than the events mentioned above), but when shooting video for weddings I always have three bodies (and the DJI Pocket 3, just in case).
      I wish Canon would do a firmware update for the R3 to give it some of the features the R6 Mk2 has. Like false color, pre-recording, etc.

    I predict - no record limit, newer hotshoe, better resolution evf and flip screen, full size hdmi, switch for photo and video like r6II, 60mp but with options for 45mp raw and smaller, less rolling shutter, new sensor so slightly better dynamic range, still only clog3, improved autofocus with AI technology, same battery and card slots as R5, much better heat management basically no overheating unless in extreme conditions in 8k Raw and 4k 120, 4k 60 and 4k 120 over sampled, smarter IBIS system which minimises wobble compared to r5.

    Couple observations. I owned R5, R5C and R6 mark ii. I would MUCH prefer the R6 mark II removal of the screen on top in favor of more customization buttons and the layout of the R6 II. I think if they bumped above 45MP and went with a triple stacked sensor as their patent(s) have indicated, then dynamic range shouldn’t suffer at all. I unfortunately sold R5 before the firmware that fixed the heat and got R5C. HATED the cinema software on R5C and limitations; I felt I could do more on R5 vs R5C even if that wasn’t reality. In the end if R5 mark II has 60MP triple stacked sensor with improved capabilities with R6 mark II layout - I think they’ll have a home run. They just can’t have the Canon cripple hammer. OMG the struggles. I don't remember exactly but I think the FX3 is also flat and soo much easier to lock-in verticals and horizontals. Sigh.....

    I paid 500 bucks twice to get my R5 fixed after the warranty expired. The first time the shutter locked, the second time it stopped recording videos and shooting photos in high speed. Safe to say I won’t be buying the R5 II

      Yikes bro. Sounds like you should be carrying some personal property insurance for your camera; might be a cheaper option vs payouts for repairs

      I still think the R5 is a better HYBRID camera even today compared to R6II. Keyword folks is HYBRID, key features for both photo and video needs a balance.

      Those price points will move too many out of range for the R5II specifically.
