Even a turner with a couple of years experience like myself can learn things by going back to the basics. Watching someone else go through the process can open our eyes to a bad habit or poor form that we've fallen into and the aha moment comes in and slaps us awake. I know you stay busy but it would be cool if you ever start making the rounds doing demos like the big names, I would love to be in your audience. You are the working mans instructor, no bull, an everyday guy helping neighbors for the joy of doing it. You are inspiring sir. Have a good day and God bless.

This is THE MOST informative and useful guide on UA-cam not only to turn a bowl, but to turn wood in general. I wish I had seen this a year ago when I began turning. I actually learned a few things from this. Thanks for making these videos. They are most definitely helping people learn the craft.

On top of that you understand that professional level video editing plays a major role in videos of this type! Just watched this again (almost 3 years). I don't do turning everyday, I dabble in other crafts. I struggled the other week, turning a piece so this was a good refresher for me. As a novice turner I know that if I get it close, I can sand the rest out. Obviously if I can turn the wood to a nice finish then save a load of time and effort from sanding or even items that have exploded from an incorrect cut approach. It's a shame I can't like it twice.

I have been in timber most of my life, moulding machinist, 8 inch bandsaws but I knew nothing about timberlathes. Now at 83 I have purchased one and I’m watching video’s by the bucketloads. being left handed I stand on the other side of the lathe, terrified of kickbacks and forming my own way of managing.
I must say after watching you on how to do it properly I am getting confident and starting to turn out some nice work. Thank you my unnamed hero your doing an excellent job of teaching us dummies. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

You don't have to stand on other side if you don't want to. The wood or lathe doesn't care. Most experienced turners learn to be a bit ambidextrous because we don't need fine motor skills, just an understanding of leverage.

Thank you so much for everything... everything you’ve uploaded i was able to take wood shop in middle school but my high school ditched the shop programs the year before I entered and was increadably disappointed. I truly loved wood shop and was sooo disappointed that I couldn’t continue learning. Over the past 6years I have been putting a very micro shop together. The one thing I have always been super interested in is turning. Recently I purchased a Jet Mini and have been turning for about a year making pens and Turkish spindles and have been dying to expand my knowledge more. Now I’ve never signed into my UA-cam account since before google bought it out. Today for this video and all your others I finally had to log on and truly thank you. Because of your videos I’ve finally been able to complete my first small bowl also a carvers mallet. I can’t wait to see what else I learn from you.i never thought I’d get this far. Wish I could apprentice you but I’m a northerner.lol

Trust me. I’m going to be turning on regular wood before working the burl because they can be so tricky.
Fantastic tutorial. One thing to ask. On the outside why didn’t you use a regular gouge to even up the outside of the bowl? Instead you used the bowl gouge Was it just to show you can use just the bowl gouge and basically nothing else? Thanks again for a great lesson. Reminded me of my father

"16-Bit bowl" as someone born in the 80s I knew exactly what you meant and I am going to be using it from now on. Love your videos

Fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much. This is the first video, after watching dozens, that thoroughly explained things. Excellent camera work as well. You are an outstanding teacher. Thank you again.

A lot of videos assume you know more than you might which then translates into getting overwhelmed, this de-mystifies the subject massively... well done and thank you.

Having not turned anything for over 20 years, I found this very good to remember what I had forgotten and its great for beginners.

This is by far the most informative beginner video I've seen on turning to date. Thank you for the excellent instructions.

This has answered so many questions I had in my turning just half way through. And it deals with a mini, which most other lathe tutorials seem to bypass. Thanks a ton.

WOW great video, I have not turned a bowl in over 60 years. Started with a Shop Smith multi tool and enjoyed the lathe aspect of that tool. Used the table saw then the band saw to prep the blank so I could turn it to a nice bowl. Thank you

i've seen tons of videos on woodworking but never ever seen such a compleat and detailed describing of the whys and the ways and deep digging in the theory of the technics and above all such a huge ability of smart thinking and pedagogic teaching, simply you are amasing ,

I turned my first bowl last week. I did it at a class and alot of prep work was already done for us. Your video gave a very good introduction to the entire process and stuffs I did not understand while working on the bowl.
