Congratulations to Austin Brown, the winner of our John Mayer Pedalboard Giveaway! Thank you to all of those who participated and make sure to check out the late 70's EVH rig giveaway during August of 2019!
I grew up listening to a lot of hip hop, r&b, and Spanish music like bachata and salsa. When I turned 20 I discovered John Mayer because of being obsessed with Steve Jordan, it’s been 6 years of learning every Mayer song and it’s been such a happy experience. Super stoked for whoever gets this!!
Man, poor Gabriel. Lol Can you imagine someone saying, "Look - we need you to play this EXACTLY like John Mayer does or you're fired..." Gabriel gulps, pees his pants a little... Lol Well done guys.
Superb work.. Blown away by the tones, but really really appreciating the insight into crafting those tones and utilizing the pedals to get the most out of the guitar/amp etc... Great stuff, thanks so much!
Thank you Mason! Perfect final episode of this fantastic series! I was hoping for your insights on the myriad tones, nuances and uses of the pedals and combinations on the board, but this exceeded all expectations. Your detailed comments & insights about the pedals, pickup selection, technique etc., that informed John's tonal choices, combined with the musical examples and excellent demonstrations from Gabriel and Tim are outstanding. Brilliantly done and super informative. Thanks to you, Gabriel and Tim, for the hard work that went into this fun and educational series. Super grateful. Bravo!
Cant wait for the final installment of this series! Been waiting for the climax and binge watching other vertex vids too! Props to anyone who wins this!
Spooky. I'm walking home thinking about the Mayer pedalboard (this one in particular) and, after I've put my bag down and made a coffee, I turn on UA-cam and the first thing I see in my feed is - this upload! Outstanding work, Vertex.
This video series has been educational and enjoyable from start to finish. Great job by Mason, Tim and Gabby. I think the tone was pretty much spot on 👌🏽
WOW. Sounds amazing. The demos sound so good. Who ever wins this, should feel special. This pedalboard is solid, well rounded, and built by Vertex. The best in the bizz. See it is true that dreams do come true. 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Very excited to hear who the winner is. Great research on this board and rig and getting specific sounds and tones relating to this period with the JMT. Really good songs and riffs as usual....John is a master guitar player and writes hooks as good as anyone around today for sure. I really like the Katana pedal and will be getting one soon whether i win this rig or not. Thanks guys and good luck to everyone!
As a dad of 2 under 5 that has zero time to dink around with this stuff, it is a huge relief to bolster my own mediocre abilities with the OCD levels of skill of others. Thanks!! Ps.... my church thanks you as well, they love the new tones.
Ever since I saw John play "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" through a Two Rock 12 years ago (before that amp and that song were released), he's been my image of what a marriage of tone and musicality should be. Oddly, I've referred back to this image of his pedalboard for years as I work on my sound but I don't have any of the pedals in from that era. Maybe that'll change. Subscribed.
Nice series Mason. I love the attention to detail. I was visiting Brian Omilion this weekend. He is working on my pedal board and he mentioned you. I saw that nice pedal he had from Vertex on his board!!!
Beautiful! As an avid fan of john you really hit the nail on the head with the pedalboard and made a clear explanation on the whys of him using these pedals to create his tone! Btw don’t care about tone purists they argue about lithium affecting tone! Demos were excellent too!
What Amp and especially which setting exactly did you use for this? And what where your guitar settings? Mayer famously said that he always rolls of the tone to 5 and below, did you do the same thing? Everything sounded really really close, so good job, hope I can replicate some of these tones!
I have a MIM Strat that I bought at 1999/2000. Have mod it with Blender. If I win this pedalboard, it'll be a great moment of my life 'cause i've never win this kind of free gear, especially the one I cherish most like this pedalboard. Nice build man, keep up the good work 👍👍👍
You've done an amazing job pulling this board together! Really enjoyed the journey. What's the next artist board you'd like to tackle? Simple, like EVH, or crazy, like the Edge?
Hi, I like the video you did. I know that is a fuel year's old now, but it is still great. I have a question, did you run your effects in the loop or straight in to the front of the amp. Meaning, Drive pedals in to time base pedals. I don't have a aqua puss, but I do have a Echo Puss , will that help. I do hope that you can do a follow up you tube vid on the John Mayer set up. Many thanks and like to wish you a Happy New year. John From Cornwall UK.
Thanks for another great video!!´ It´s amazing to see what people do with minimal gear...I guess less is more makes sense after all. I'm rooting for everyone, specially ME in the giveaway!! Greeting from Japan!!
Nice rig. John has also talked about setting the volume knob to 9 ish and rolling the tone knobs to about the 5-7 range to eliminate the harsh top end that most strats have.
What amp do you recommend? Is a fender blues deluxe a good amp for john mayer style tones. I have this rig Boss tu 3, keeley katana 》klon centaur clone 》ibanez ts9 》 ehx q tron plus 》 aqua puss delay mk2 》 mxr carbon copy. What settings did you use on the ibanez tubescreamer and what setting you use for the katana i use it on 5 I already had these pedals. But enjoyed this series and subscribed. Keep going on. Thank you. And last question can i use the vertex steel stringer as a klon centaur type pedal.
Hey man, Gabriel here.. any fender type clean would be a good match. Tubescreamer had everything around noon. Id say use Katana just a hint above unity gain. Steel String is pure clean, it can crunch but not really like a klon type pedal.
I think a clean Fender tube amp is the move, preferably 6L6 style. I like using the gain almost off on a TS pedal and use the volume and tone for a mid-range color. The Steel String is more of an amp emulator, where the Klon is a low gain OD at it's best. I think it's more of a "both" rather than "one or the other" sort of thing. The Steel String will help turn your Fender amp into a clean style Dumble like JM used.
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks i think i go for the fender amp. I use the klon as a low gain boost. Allright so i want the vertex steel stringer. I love the tone. If you see my pedal layout. Where do i need to put it. After the overdrives or before the keeley katana. What do you suggest
I guess I need to reevaluate how I use the pedals I already own. I have an older Blues Driver that I rarely use any more & I like how that sounded w/ the Strat. I typically use it when I'm not bringing a pedalboard & just grab a drive & delay. Might have to add the Phat mod.
thanks..Awesome video... I've got two questions for you... 1) which settings would you use for the song "Try" by john mayer trio? 2) my chain boss tu3>mad professor simble overdrive (V1)>paul cochrane Timmy>MXR CAE boost overdrive>Boss DD3>Marshall reflector...All of it in a egnater rebel head and a jensen speaker cab in solid wood...Do you think this rig can be enough to match mayer tones or it lacks of something, like a tube screamer type pedal (I possess a east river drive by EHX) or an analog delay? Thank you very much!!!!!
I'm looking for a budget friendly setup to get the effects used in "Bigger Than My Body". I can't find the delay pedal used, I can't remember the name of it right now. I believe it was something like Adrenaline?
Im so excited! You guys put so much work into this board and it shows, it would be an honor for anyone to use it, i just really wish and hope it’s me 🤞❤️
This is really neat. I have been trying to learn some more JM stuff recently and I don’t have most of that gear I have been able to get close to some of his sounds. Though so much of his tone comes from his right hand it’s cool to recreate his tone through pedals. I have always wanted a blues driver
I think the Steel String is a must to emulate his amp tone that the Katana would run into, however, because we tried to keep this as close as original as possible I didn't include John's Dumble, or our Steel String Singer (John's Dumble emulator)
