I like the saying “we all have 2 lives, the second starts when we realise that we only have 1.”… or words to that effect. It certainly is the case for me. I learned through illness how many things I’d taken for granted. Im grateful for everything afforded to me now & discovered I can’t have a bad day because I know how fortunate I am to have another day. (Bit too grand sounding?)

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  2 роки тому +2

Wow... It's wonderful to hear how you were able to use your experience of illness to gain such an amazing benefit in life. To me, the sensation of gratitude is almost like a spiritual compass. It gives us a fairly reliable sense of direction, and tells that we're probably on the right track [insert Ariadne's Thread simile here... ha ha]. I also like the quote you're using to illustrate how that sort of thing happens. None of it sounds too, "grand sounding" to me. But then again, I do have a bit of a predilection for poetic excess (or so my wife tells me). Anyhow, I think that in light of what I'm saying in this video, the theme of Momento Mori plays out not only with respect to the larger and more literal reality of death, but also in a more figurative and perhaps more intimate way -- especially when we realize that we're already dying... already leaving life as we've known it thus far behind, and relegating it to the penumbra of our memories. Anyhow, thanks as always for listening. Gratitude for your presence in this universe. Eric D.

@@ericdodson2644 what great thoughts thanks. I see Momento mori as a call to action I guess. A reminder to get on and live our lives to the best of our ability. We’re all heading to the same destination ultimately so why not make the best of the time we’re given. Love your content. I listened to everything on both channels pretty much through Covid. Hmm... "Baby Bat..." So, does that mean that you're relatively new to the Goth scene? If so, well... cool. Anyhow, yes, our world does tend to neglect teachers & artists, especially these days. But to me, all of that's really nothing more than the contours of our world's essential challenge... which is to move forward in life, despite all of our reasons to do otherwise. And I'd say that the same is true of rediscovering our souls. In a way, it's an exciting opportunity, more than it's a reason to feel despondent or defeated. But, hey, that's just me. As in all things, your own mileage may vary. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to listen. Gratitude. Eric D.

I love this video, thank you Eric. I think one of the greastest psychopomps I know of would be Ram Dass, think what you may of his spirituality, but that man dedicated much of his later life to palliative care and being with dying people, not for the faint of heart! I think his line "We're all just walking each other home." has taken on a meaning that skirts around facing our existential condition, but this video points perfectly towards its deepest meaning.

I appreciate your presence in this universe and Namaste. I transitioned about a decade ago and the last 5 years has been rediscovering that which was never lost. The theme of psychopomp always comes up and yes, it is just a way of being. To see the unity of the universe beyond the duality of perception allows one to dance in this realm. I love that these discussions are reemerging, it is needed.

A appreciate your presence in this world too. Thank you for your talk today. I notice that, yet again, you quoted Camus. You seem to be a fan of his. I did my Master's dissertation comparing him to Qohelet (the voice of the Hebrew scripture book Ecclesiastes). So I am a bit of a fan too.

Yes, I am a fan of his. And although I hadn't thought of it before, I can already perceive some striking parallels between his thought and the Book of Ecclesiastes. So, I bet that comparing them made for a very fertile Master's thesis. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to listen. Gratitude. Eric D.

Dear Eric, this is a general comment.
I notice that very often you talk about topics of listening to your soul, listening to your heart, taking a risk to follow your passion.
But what when one rationally decides to not follow your passion, when one maybe cannot listen to your soul but has simply to 'push through' ?
Where can one take the strength. Because I feel that sometimes one should not follow the heart, but yet one needs some source of strength and inspiration to carry on.

It occurred to me the other day we're not really far off from living in a world similar to Prince Gautama in the enclosure of his father keeping him ignorant of death.
It's like the concept of dying (and thus rebirth) has been actively removed/repressed in Western culture (old people's homes and graveyards at the hidden edges).
I remember I was in Sarajevo where walls still had bullet holes, and old graves still populate public parks and old people walking the street.
That place seemed to have a better balance between chaos and order.

"What in the nine hells? And what's this "soul-work", is that like shadow work only more vague?" ^^
This reminds me of Foucault, who proposed that 'progress' is actually a relative term, because in the middle ages they would put people who would currently be considered mentally ill and who get drugged into some arbitrary 'normalcy' or institutionalized in remote locations, on a stage in the center of town, in order provide society with an alternative self-reflection method.
(Which is not to say I think Foucault tells it better.)

Well, I think that your first question is a pretty good illustration of one of the main points I'm making in this video... namely, that the vocabulary we use to talk about the soul has become baffling and almost incomprehensible in today's world. Anyhow, with regard to the idea that progress is relative... Well, as the old adage goes, "One man's meat is another man's poison." And I think that the same is true of so-called progress. In fact, I'd say that that phenomenon is near the heart of a lot of the animus and divisiveness afflicting our world these days. A lot of it's rooted in the fact that what is obviously progressive to one person... is obviously regressive to another. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to watch & listen. Eric D.

Thanks for this. Given the emphasis in some of your videos on the centrality of addiction to contemporary culture, I was wondering whether you might consider a video on addiction and our digital lives. I have seen a lot of videos by people like Jason Lanier on the harms of social media (which I do not use) and articles on digital over-stimulation and dopamine fasting. I would be very interested to hear your take on it, especially given your creative and positive use of a digital format.
