In Aztec mythology there is no ferryman to guide you across the river in the underworld. Only your own dog could help you sort it. Therefore, people were buried alongside their dogs.
This whole video had me mesmerized between the hopeful melancholy that thinking about someone waiting on the other side brings and the fear of death itself. Then when that dedication showed up, it cut the tension between those feelings and I instantly broke into tears.
Seeing Vittorio Gassman in a Rhystic Study video is something else. Thank you from the depth of my heart for being so true to Italian culture. Your knowledge of it is something truly impressive. Much love ♥️
I noticed this as well. Only reason I know is because wife is Italian, and her uncle owns a theatre so he has quite a bit of Vittorio material at home.
Well the man did do a thesis on the subject , literally has a PhD in Italian studies . But considering the work he puts into researching his videos you'd think he had several.
"The power of stories is far greater than the medium in which they reside. And sometimes those stories helps us come to terms with what happens after, and what a thought that is." Damn, that's one way to end a video. I'm more than glad to have met you at Magic 30 Vegas and this was a wonderful way to end my journey from there at the airport. Thanks Sam.
The way you talk about Charon/Athreos as a not-unkind guide granting safe passage to the dead reminds me of Discworld’s DEATH. Great video as always; thank you!
As a speedrunner of Hades, and someone who treasures the Athreos in my Orzhov deck. What a beautiful video. Touched my interests on a broad spectrum with this one.
As an Italian, a guitarist, a rock affecionado and huge mtg and nerdy stuff lover, I started watching your videos because I wanted to just consume more mtg related content. I keep tuning in because of the extremely insightfull analysis and the really creative point of views you constantly offer. Seeing someone so distant from me, yet so invested in the game I love, who likes the music I like and who's really into my culture really warms my hearth. I hope you keep doing what you do because this work really gives a lot of dignity to mtg
Though it's not a perfect mirror, I also see in the original design of Athreos the Attic literary trope of burial rites. In the Ajax by Sophocles, or Euripides' Antigone, characters are reminded that even with all of their malice towards the dead, that they must still permit the body to be given a proper burial. Though Polyneices never came back from the dead, the mistake of refusing him burial led to the downfall of Creon. Also within that, the mechanic also reflects the idea that without that burial, the spirit wanders. I would be surprised if this wasn't at least in part responsible for Athreos' design.
im literally writing a whole college research essay with the main backbone of its thesis being supported by how amazing your videos are, they are inspiring to me to just be more creative in life to try to create something even close to as amazing of works you make
Thank you, Sam. Death is a thing many of us think about a lot and it's cathartic to be reminded that the many cultures who have come before and have shaped ours have thought about it a lot too. Knowing it all must end is what makes us human. Memento Mori.
Today in Mexico we solemnly celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, the day of the dead. I lost family and friends this year and their passing was a sad event for us. But for this past week that culminates tonight, we celebrate their lives as they visit us from the realm beyond until sunrise tomorrow. Thank you so much for this video.
I'm currently writing a dnd campaign for my friends that has a focus on death and the spirit of the world that sends souls to the afterlife. This is another great video, thanks for all the work you put into these, it's really inspiring.
Ugh, what a marvelous meditation on our connection with the past through stories, death itself, and how both of them coalesce in MtG. It also hit like a freight train with that end dedication to your cousin. It emphasized how sincere this whole thing was on top of how well it was conveyed. Every time you upload is like being in my favorite type of class, and I cannot help but keep watching, wondering where the thought experiment will land. Excellent work.
I made an EDH Athreos deck about three years ago and thanks to you I now know that the Etruscans would have really agreed with the concept behind my deck 😂 I designed the deck to brutally punish the sinners in my play group with a never ending series of board wipes as I collected all of their combo pieces by putting coin counters on them. Winning with Revel in Riches always felt appropriate for the boatman.
Something else to consider is the role of the psychopomp in First Nations cultures! The Oneida saw Loon as one of their guides of the dead, for example. Great video as always
So just discovered your channel. Your scripts and narrations make for excellent videos. Also as a history major, I love the plethora of knowledge you dispense in an easily understandable method. Keep it up.
So, a good while back, I started answering my phone with "Hello, Psychopomps Я Us" as a way to foil telemarketers. Unfortunately, the majority of telemarketer calls are prerecorded messages. But the times when it's actually a human, and they actually hear me say it (my phone doesn't always transmit the first few seconds of what I say after it connects, and now the ringtone has turned into a shrieking whine), most of the time, that's enough to fool them into thinking it's a business and not a residence, so they hang up. Tl;dr: 60% of the time, it works every time.
Beautifully done. I wrote a piece of music dedicated to ferryman after my grandmother had passed. We all hope to have someone give safe passage for something precious.
your video made me think of both my grandmothers, whom I loved so much, and what their journey to the afterlife could have been. on my mom's side, my grandma would have tried to ask questions about the scenery and the history of the land on the way, and she would have asked to stop at any historical marker on the road. on my dad's side, my grammy probably complainted about the comfort of the seats and the liberal government making decisions in styx. thank you very much for the reason to think about them lots tonight. they were very different people but i miss them both the same.
Thank you for letting us sail off with the boatman in the conclusion of the Video. I think I'll buy a print of the interpretation of the isle of the dead that brings me the most peace .
It might just have been a choice for mechanical reasons, but it's fitting that Athreos is White/Black. He cares for his passengers and guides them safely to the other side, but for all his benevolence he still demands the toll be paid. White is traditionally the "good" color and black "evil," but taken together they have a sort of liminal quality that suits the God of Passage.
i just so happened to pick up an athreos the other day. it was one of my favorite cards when i first started playing, though i couldnt afford it in high school. Its very haunting, but in a comforting way. it wears its gold border well.
I love this video so much. Athreos was the first EDH deck I ever made (it was terrible), the first legendary I ever pulled, and the first mythic rare I ever got. I’m glad you like this card as much as I do.
I find your work Medicinal and therapeutic. This video is 12 days old, and yet it is already nostalgic. Athreos *was* my first commander, thankyou Sam.
Sam, your work is a fresh breath in the stagnant day to day. A video of yours never ceases to bring out thoughts and emotions which don’t get to come out to play too often. Your clear narrative is a guide through beautiful and challenging concepts. Can’t say enough how masterful your work is. Thank you for what you do.
The Greek letter chi, 'Χ', is usually transliterated as 'ch', but pronounced as a hard 'C' or a 'K', not as a 'sh' or a 'ch' as you might expect. Indeed, 'chi' itself is pronounced 'kai'.
I think about death and dying a lot of the time. Is like a thing that does not evade my daily life and makes me anxious to know, to leave a world where feeling is the ultimate experience, to not be... alive... This kind of video triggers some sensibilities, but at the same time gives me some peace of mind. Im sorry for you loss, and thank you for the beautiful video.
i really love your videos. you are a true artist in my opinion, and i tremble a litte everytime i notice a new upload. sometimes i even wait for days or weeks in anticipation of another cool, beautiful and/or enlightening experience, other times (like now) i immediately click on the notification to dive right into your own crazy little world of magic. i dont know what this ones about, besides reading a comment about death, so i hope you are well personally and thank you for sharing. keep it up obviously
Beautiful stuff. As someone almost completely ignorant of art, this content just fascinates me. And the video editing is sublime too -- fantastic stuff. Delivered the melancholy mood that the art in question goes for.
Incredible. Your videos are just as much pieces of art as each of the paintings you talk about - they invoke complex, unique states of emotion that you wouldn't experience otherwise. Thank you for your passionate work!

Thank you for making this video. Athreos, God of Passage was my first commander and you managed perfectly to put into words what i felt when i looked at the card.
Your videos are always delightful to watch. The research behind is great, your voice is really good and you always give us an interesting insight on the game we love and how does it relate to art and the world around us. I hope you never stop.
Iv watched this over and over, coming back once every month or so just to listen to the masterpieces of story telling you make. After all this time, iv decided to make an athreos deck. This video, above all others, is my favorite.
I just found out about your channel a few hours back, as an aspiring MtG artist myself i just find your videos of an invaluable help, in order to fully understand the art behind this game …the delicacy, deepness and taste you put in all those videos is to die for, i really want to thank you for your work, i hope it keeps coming 😊

Always a pleasure to watch and listen to those videos. It is fascinating to discuss Isle of the Dead or the representations of the Charon the ferrymen in visual art and literature starting from the look and mechanic of a Magic card, and without stretching at all the logic behind the connections. Shame that the company behind the game, which has throughout the years allowed Magic to act as an entry door to mythology and folklore for many with its references, is instead more and more falling to the temptation of rather capitalize on flavour of the month pop-culture that would never allow for such discussions.
thanks for this video. I've always been fascinated with the figure of Charon and I also started playing Athreos in a commander deck a few weeks ago, so this video came at a great time.
I lack the language ability to put into words how mesmerized and fascinated I am will all of your work. I honestly lack that ability in italian too, your videos are such a pleasure to watch and listen to. I once again congratulate you for your impeccable research and knowledge on italian and all culture in general, confronting two things such as the Divina Commedia and Hades is something else. Yet another simply amazing video
Your videos are eeriely inspiring and insightful, showing me new perspectives to things i have never thought i had. Thanks for your wonderful work, Sam.

The comparison to a rogue-like is very interesting to me. I also played a lot of Hades last year. I would not have thought to compare it to an Aristocrat deck, but now that you’ve said it I don’t think I’ll be able to forget it the next time I play mine.
