Avoiding rejection has cost me a lot of opportunities. I'm finally learning that.
Yeah, it's easy to be ruled by our natural desires to avoid rejection, especially since rejection tends to be fairly painful. But on the other hand, constantly avoiding the possibility of rejection creates a fairly narrow and constricted imprisonment for our souls. It makes me happy that you're learning that. For most of us, it takes a while. I wish you luck and fair winds as you navigate all of that. Gratitude. Eric D.
I chased a chipmunk out of my garden today. It didn't appear to feel rejected at all; it went to the neighbor's garden, which is bigger and better. Are chipmunks smarter than us? Good video.

I really appreciate your lecture today, it came at a really important time in my life. I received an email from my father two days ago about how disappointed he was in me and it broke my heart. I know that I stand in my truth and I stand for what I believe. My beliefs have upset him and caused him heartache and by causing him heartache that has led me to feel so sad. Thank you so much for the wisdom and helping me balance my truth versus what other peoples expectations in life are.
Well, you're welcome. I often think that one of the principal challenges of parenthood has to do with resisting the temptation to try to turn our children into clones of ourselves... so that they end up seeing things like we do... talking and behaving just like we do, with the same basic values, habits, attitudes, religious & political convictions, etc. And on the other side of the generational divide, the essential challenge of being a son or daughter is to appropriate our parents' valuable wisdom, but at the same time to filter out as many of their toxins as possible... and to let go of whatever they're offering that doesn't really fit us... and then to invent our own unique responses to life's riddle. But from our parents' point of view, that whole process can easily seem like a tremendous disappointment. But on the other hand, if our children *don't* end up becoming their *own* distinct persons, following their *own* singular path in life... well, at that point we might well wonder if we were good parents in any meaningful sense at all. Basically, as I see it, parenthood is about liberating our children to pursue their own best destiny, which may or may not coincide with ours. Just a thought. Well, thanks to YOU for taking the time to watch it. Hey... yesterday I tried to send my 4-minute video to you, but I kept receiving a "Mailbox does not exist" message in return. The address I used begins with this string: mansonfamily_mtts, followed by an "at" symbol, and then the word "yahoo," and ends with "com" (I'm saying it in this awkward way because of how YT automatically deletes posts that contain... well, you can figure it out). So, is the address actually correct? If so, do you have another address I can use? And if you do, can you post it either here or on the feed on your channel (you need to code it somehow, preferably without an "at" symbol... or YT will probably delete it)?
The passion that you radiate when you’re talking about the worst case scenario on your death bed is palpable. Like I always say, you are not just a teacher, you are also a poet. I cannot thank you enough for all your videos and lectures on philosophy that you have posted on UA-cam, they are one of the most accurate and truly profound sources of information on many philosophers' views and their systems of thought. And I also fell in love with your videos concerning suicide, depression, etc. I found them to be quite inspiring and useful when I was struggling with my life's darkest moments. And I do believe that all the work you have done here, on UA-cam, has been of great help to lots of people, and I hope that you continue to be making your videos and be an inspirational teacher.
In this video you did mention that the topic of rejection was proposed by a viewer. And so I wondered if I could propose mine :) A friend of mine gave me a book "Oblivion: Stories" by David Foster Wallace as a birthday gift. I had never heard of this author before, however, having read this book, I felt as if this book's stories directly addressed issues that you usually cover in your videos, such as entertainment, commodity culture and authentic existence (a good example of the latter would be a story called ''Good Old Neon"). And after watching some interviews with David Wallace it seemed to me that he was indeed concerned with these issues. And he is also considered to be a member of 'New Sincerity' movement in fiction. All in all, I was wondering if you read some of David's works or other examples of 'New Sincerity' movement and could make a video with your thoughts on this phenomenon with regard to (post?-)post-modern human condition.

The rejection could be a negative perception related to self-esteem or the existence of a rejection. It all depends on the circumstance. The person who feels rejected constantly undervalues himself, which leads him to perfectionist attitudes in an attempt to seek validation from others, but the more one seeks perfection and consequently, the feeling of inefficiency and failure increases. El rechazo es como cualquier cosa en la vida que muestra varias explicaciones. ¿Me explico?
Perhaps (unconsciously) most of us are so enraged that we were forced to experience all of this existential trauma that we can only resent the idea that we should be accepting of anything.
Yeah, that's certainly an understandable reaction, especially insofar as human existence involves a pretty sizable measure of suffering, humiliation and unfairness. But of course, it's not the only reaction, and maybe not even the best one. Anyhow, I did a video a while back on Efilism, which seems fairly close to the position you're describing. Authenticity & integrity are a common thread through all of your material. I love it.
Having experienced a close call coming up 10 years ago, the biggest & then scariest thing was, a massive reminder of the things I didn’t do or didn’t say & the idea I may never get to. In that moment I promised myself & said to the universe, in my case, please give me another chance and I’ll do it differently. Momento Mori says so much to me in how I live. You hit the nail on the head again sir…it’s like you’re speaking to me every single video! 💥
Well, I've suspected from the beginning that you and I speak the same, somewhat uncommon dialect. And it's basically the language of authenticity, integrity, engagement and memento mori. Anyhow, I'm impressed with how you've taken the experience of a close call, and used it to improve yourself and intensify your life. Like other people who commented here this is so perfectly timed for me and aligns with my own process, which had involved feeling hurt about recent rejections, then starting to get more perspective on it and being able to look at it more like one might hold a dodecahedron in one's hand and turn t around and look at all of its facets, some of which mirror one's own expectations and some facets which reflect the expectations of others', and also the actual living dynamics of those things and how they are constantly at work in life. Thanks for another enjoyable video.
Yeah... I like how you're comparing all of this to looking at a dodecahedron. There's great value, I find, in getting some perspective on what we're going through in life... especially so that we're not consumed with all of the details and minutiae, at the expense of the larger picture. The algorithms that led me to your work resulted from me researching the subject of the Trickster archetype. I felt I had come across a real philosopher and it seems your skills in various areas have integrated in such a way that you can deliver deep subjects in a helpful and easy way (often something some philosophers struggle with I daresay) which makes it all the more valuable. I find interesting characters' skills in often seemingly incompatible areas is a signifier of a certain kind of brilliance. Winsor McCay I think is a good example, for his incredibly detailed comic strip art which must have taken many hours in privacy, his openness to exploring contemporaneously new technology in his being one of the earliest animators and also his lesser known more public performance related activities as a music hall performer. Anyway. Much appreciated.

Anyhow, it seems to me that a lot of so-called "accidents" are actually life's way of trying to draw our attention to something -- and probably toward something we need to learn, or something that might enhance our lives somehow. And the challenge of "accidents" is usually to detect their deeper meaning for our lives. Anyhow... wow... 37 years. That's definitely a lot of experience, which I imagine would make feeling rejected pretty painful and life-altering. I wish you luck and courage as you navigate through that difficult passage. Ha ha... thanks. Yeah, it seems to me that half the trick of authenticity has to do with learning to choose our battles well. That's because it's probably an exercise in overweening ambition to think that we can be authentic all the time -- or even most of the time. And so, it seems to me like there's wisdom in learning to perceive when it's important... and when it would only result in our dissipating a lot of energy on trivial situations & issues. But of course, learning that skill also means developing a fair measure of discernment & perspicacity -- which isn't necessarily an easy thing. But on the other hand, what better task is there for souls such as we? Anyhow, I'd glad that you're experimenting with all of that in your life. You definitely seem like you're on the way. Gratitude. Well, first -- SURPRISE! -- your comment isn't being ignored. Hmm... perhaps there's some sort of life-lesson in there somewhere. Anyhow, yeah, I've made quite a few videos on Albert Camus. More specifically in those videos I talk about how our entertainment/commodity culture becomes a mode of what Camus calls, "Philosophical suicide." I also relate Camus's texts to the various challenges of living in the age of COVID. But perhaps more generally, I'd say that Camus poses a range of difficult, and fairly fundamental questions to our world. I think you haven't covered Alfred Adler in your videos so far. Particularly, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts about his notion of Community Feeling, which is something he puts a great deal of emphasis on, but I, as someone who deeply values solitude, haven't been able to warm up to.

Rejection with betrayal insanity it is the red flags we’re all there I just believed his words
Being in the printing business is not easy. I lost two of my largest calendars that I’ve been doing for the past 5 years. It didn’t dent my shop’s economics albeit it did to my self esteem! Luckily the phrase of Sartre comes to mind “hell is other people” and to “lament oneself uses the same energy as getting stronger”. All heard in these lectures! So it’s time to introspection and cost analysis - albeit these big ticket orders where neither lost by price alone - so it’s time to plan a revenge no unlike that of the Count of Montecristo!
Hi Prf Dodson, many thanks for this and the other videos where you reframe the various social ailments and challenges that many of us encounter in the course of our lives. I find all of them both therapeutic and thought-provoking in equal measure.
A couple of quick references that sprang to mind as I watched:
Don't know if you've ever heard of a British band called The Libertines? You are clearly a music lover, so you may want to check them out.
Anyway, a line from the song 'I get along' seems quite apt 😀 - 'I get along just singing my song, people tell me I'm wrong....(short guitar rift) fuck em'
And now, a slightly more 'highbrow' connection with your thoughts on rejection from Schopenhauer, who I believe (and please do correct me if I'm wrong) said of rejection in affairs of the heart that we should think of it as just a sort primeval decision, made on a subconscious level, that neither you nor the object of your affections has any real control over, and, as such, we should try not be bitter about rejection of this sort for that reason. That has always made sense to me when you think about the origins of our species etc and provided me with significant amount of comfort at those difficult times.
Incidentally, have you ever thought of doing a video about the relationship between us and our more primeval selves and how to reconcile the two? I read a book called The Chimp Paradox some time ago which I found interesting and undeniable in parts, but also unconvincing and contradictory at times too. I'm sure you'd do a better job!! ;)

I was just thinking about self rejection. and is that a separate issue. or is self rejection a by product of external rejection. and then I thought, oh! it isn’t really coming from the external, the external is a reflection of our own self rejection.
Well, I'd say that self-rejection is certainly related to our rejection of other people. For instance, like I'm saying in this video, fairly often we reject other people because we're really rejecting something inside of ourselves that we can't stand. That's basically a form of what's called, "Projection" in psychological circles. Anyhow, I made a video on a very related topic, "Self-hate" a little while back. I'll put a link to it below. Don't we, as optimistic people, always hope that one day she'll see us for what we really are come running back into our arms?
This hope helps, it's helps you change and believe in your self worth.

So after thinking a bit more about it, essentially the question is
How do I accept rejection?
You know, because by hoping she changes her mind or re-evaluates or sees me for what I really am, I am not accepting the rejection.
However, not accepting could also be beneficial, after all, when someone dies we all think of him 'being in a better place' or 'living on in our hearts' and not slowly but surely decomposing underground.
