Totally agree….She lost to Brie Larson in Room. Saoirise (sp) Ronin was also in the running for Brooklyn. All fantastic performances in fantastic films. Hard choice but Room really was the conversation that year

The phrase “canary in a coal mine”. Birds super rapid breathing causes it to be affected by poisons in the air before humans. If the bird gets sick or something, the humans know to get out fast.
I was like, she's never heard of canary in a gold mine?
It always surprises me that 90% of reaction channels that watch this movie have never learnt anywhere about canarys in mines. They did alot of mining in America over the years so for sure I thought most people would have an idea of what the canary was used for. I've known all about this since before I started high school which was at age 11 I'd already learnt about it in primary school so most likely I was about 9 learning about it we also were taken to a gold mine on a trip to help learn what life for miners was like

That's one of those expressions that is losing its meaning/significance the more modern things get.
Anyone remember the movie, I think it was "How Green Was My Valley", and the canary was like a prop or something, they were coal miners in Wales(?), and they kept the canaries in cages on the front porch, and they'd take them back and forth to the mine for their shift, part of the equipment like your headlamp and lunch bucket.

Yes, there was a lot of mining in the U.S. and I have no doubt that Welshmen were in every mine. Many many Welsh men left for better opportunities in the U.S. Too often there were cutbacks and the pay wasn’t fabulous. Men needed to work so they emigrated to places where steady work was available.
Coal was THE biggest industry and probably everyone knew a miner. Small nation. Big industry. Greater chance everyone knows about the canary in the coal mine.

That was so satisfying how you immediately got the whole story as soon as she asked, “Who is this child?”. When you know the truth, the beginning of the movie is a completely different experience. Great reaction.
They have SUCH emotional intelligence, is soooo satisfying watching them! OF COURSE as soon as it ended they recognized what a gem it is, unlike more "sofisticated/cool" people.

Yep, this took my breath away, because some need to mull it over for a while or a 2nd viewing. Fantastic watching their joint reactions and the discussion after.
One of the best nuggets in the movie was the line “I forgot how good it felt to be held by you.” In that moment, in its linear timeline, Louise and Ian never embraced. Yet, she remembers what it felt like to be held by him. That is such an amazing concept and to realize that she already remembers how it feels to hold her baby for the first time.
Totally agree, that scene is nearly as impactful as the "big" reveal when you realize the full scope of it.
Notice also that when her child is born, she says “Come back to me.”.
Powerful stuff, emotionally and intellectually.
Also, the final shot after Hannah dies is her mother walking down a curved corridor...
This film, Interstellar (2014), & Contact (1997), remain my top three pure science fiction films.
and District 9....although it's hard to watch
I would add The Martian (2015) to the list of pure sci fi movies that I love.
While I loved The Andromeda Strain (1971) and its book, I haven't re-watched it in years and it's more of movie you can watch once and you're good, though I think everyone should watch it at least once in their lives. :)

The bird (minute 14) is based on the old "canary in a coal mine" that was used to detect bad air - the canary will fall over before it harms a human.
In deciding to have Hannah, Louise took the example of Abbott who knew he would die but protected her anyway.
She already loves Hannah, how could she choose not to? Same reason she doesn't tell Ian until later, in case it changes things. It makes me wonder if she has any choice over her life, or if you could choose to avoid things with bad outcomes
There was a version of the script where Abbott was inspired to participate in this endeavor unto death due to Louise's response to having Hannah in spite of knowing the outcome.

No. When she already perceived the time as non-linear, she knew that if she decided not to have Hannah, it would mean that all of her nice memories of her would disappear and that would be horrible.
In this universe there is no free will. She has Hannah because she already had Hannah.
But even in our universe the reality is that everyone who is born will die. The time each of us has is finite; our time together is finite.
Usually parents die before their kids, but the kids will all still die. Louise was there for her daughter when she died. Which to me is very selfless, not selfish.
"Arrival", "Interstellar", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Close Encounters of The Third Kind" and a few other films are the Gold Standard in science fiction.
They don't dumb things down for the audience. They challenge us with profound ideas and concepts about human beings and about Life, the Universe and Everything. We need more of these films and less of the garbage that is usually made.
My niece LOVES Interstellar, has been after me to see it. One of these days . . .

This movie came from a short story called "The Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. My daughter attended a writers workshop where he taught. I love that you spend the whole movie thinking this is just a movie about aliens only to find out at the end it's really about family and the choices we make for them.

Well, you guys definitely served us a Michelin star meal of a movie and reaction. I've seen this movie several times and I never tire of it. It's "timeless".
This movie hits at an intellectual and emotional level; it is so satisfying when you finally understand how "time travel" works in the movie, but immediately after you realize Louise has to make a painful personal choice that hits like a gut punch
The General’s wife’s dying words translate to “In war, there are no winners, only widows”.
This is just such a beautiful movie. Directing, screenplay, cinematography, sound design, editing, and Best Actress for Amy Adams - should’ve won a slew of awards.
The tune during the ending scene is a beautiful contemporary classical piece called "On The Nature Of Daylight" written and conducted by Max Richter. I've heard it used elsewhere, but nowhere else does it accompany the visual as perfect as it does here.
I love that music so much.
It was used in a very famous episode of The Last of Us.
"Arrival" was a movie that I wasn't very interested in when it came out because I (wrongly) assumed it was a remake of an old Charlie Sheen movie that had a very similar name. My gf insisted we go see this in the theater, though, and it WAY exceeded my expectations. Just a gorgeous, masterfully-written, perfectly-acted, heart-wrenching, thought-provoking movie that is now one of my favorites. And I love that it's so smart instead of just being another dumb "alien invasion" movie. I'm stoked that you two reacted to this because it really is top-tier storytelling and moviemaking. It also gave me a new appreciation for Amy Adams, who absolutely KILLED it in this movie.

I could recommend a ton of dumb alien invasion movies to them (I feel like I've watched them all), but every now and then we get a gem like Arrival and it makes all those viewing hours worth it. Such an incredible movie.
@@xzonia1 I don't mind an alien invasion movie once in a while but, when it's seemingly every alien movie, it gets old. They're almost all just disaster movies with "aliens" instead of a "giant tornado" or "super volcano" or whatever. I have a similar feeling regarding movies about AI. 99.9% of them are the exact same story (i.e. "Frankenstein"). It's like, man, come up with another idea. I've seen that movie SO. MANY. TIMES.
That's why I love when a smart sci-fi comes around and does something interesting with its subject matter instead of just repeating the same tropes and playing off the same fears (or, in the case of "Arrival," using and subverting the same ol' tropes and fears to make a point about us rather than about the aliens).
@@johnplaysgames3120 True. Hollywood makes its bread and butter off of telling the same story a thousand times. As anyone who's studied writing will tell you, though, there's only a dozen or so different story types, and these stories get told over and over with just slight variations. Part of the reason for this is because people actually do want to hear the same story again and again; repetition is how we as a species learn. It's nice to see it reframed with different characters and different twists here and there, but mostly people want the reassurance of knowing how the story will end because they've heard it before.
Aliens and AI are often used as metaphors for human fears in storytelling, hence all the destruction stories. It is rare to see stories focus on aspirational or hopeful thoughts like this one does. It's harder to make a hopeful story interesting and engaging, and lazy writers will go for writing the easier script. That's why the best movies are usually based off of incredible books written by someone who's only written one or a handful of books. It's not something they dashed off over a weekend. They spent years crafting an original idea into a work of art. It took Ted Chiang 5 years to write "Story of Your Life,", the source material for Arrival. Hollywood doesn't take that kind of time writing scripts, as a general rule. Hence all the B movies out there. Sometimes they make a book into a movie and it's amazing, like this, and that is enough for me. I just read a lot and enjoy movies for what they are. However, I agree with you and am glad when we get wins like this movie. :)

A small thing is Abbott was always late to arrive, probably because he knew he was going to die.
Another thing is I feel Louise probably didn't tell Ian about that their daughter will die, because she knows that if she does he'll leave
Abbott knew he was going to die before he came on this mission, but he came anyway. I dislike the idea of destiny because it takes away your choice, but I love the idea of finding your purpose and embracing it. Abbott didn't just save Louise and Ian, he saved both humanity and the heptopods. Abbott was a hero.
She did tell him, but only a few years after her birth, and he did leave because of it.

she had to have, if she didn't then her memories would have been different. Since time isn't linear she can't change the events because it's already occurred.
"They Live" (1988) is another classic alien Sci-Fi film. Directed by the legendary John Carpenter, and stars Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Keith David.
A very thought provoking movie, and really makes the wheels turn. maybe not literal skin walkers but people who pretend to be something they really aren’t. But then again… maybe that explains it…? 😅
Not the best acting but works for some reason.
I’m a fan of stories that open people’s eyes to what’s going on in the world, even if it’s somehow only bad if it’s aliens behind it, rather than simply greed.

The "zero sum game" flashback is the first time we really get a clue because it's the first flashback where the present gives her the answer to her daughter, but nobody grasps the ramifications first time they watch the movie.
The bird is there to detect problems with the air. If the bird dies, you hightail it out. That’s what the term “canary in the coal mine” means. The miners had canaries in cages and if it died you knew the air was getting bad.
and it was time to GTFO!
Amy Adams is one of the most talented and versatile actresses working today - she's played everything from a wholesome Disney princess (Enchanted) to a timid nun (Doubt) to a sleazy con-woman (American Hustle). Definitely check out more of her films! :)
PLEASE watch the first 2 Alien movies! You will love them even though they are a little scary. The first one is a little more scary, and the second one is all about action. Its one of those that the sequel is better than the first. (In my oppinion)

It didn't occur to me for the longest time that Abbott likely knew it was going to die in this mission, too.
One thing I always find fascinating about the idea that time might be non-linear and that past, present, and future actually all exist at once (and that it's our senses' way of perceiving/processing time that gives it the illusion of passing) is that this would suggest that there's no actual death in the way we think of it. People we think of as having "passed away" would still exist at all the same space-time coordinates where we experienced them. If we could navigate through time the same way we can through space, we could go see them and they'd still be there, existing. They're not "gone," per se; they're just located elsewhere in time.
In that case, what we think of as a person's "life" or "existence" would be a 4th dimensional shape that covers a certain area of space-time coordinates (or a 5th dimensional shape that covers space-time along our traditional idea of a "timeline" as well as all the quantum variations extending "sideways," so to speak, from that). The places where our personal shape extends beyond their shape is where we would perceive them as being gone (either dead or not yet born or as a possibility wave that collapsed, depending on which side of the shape you're currently perceiving from), but they wouldn't have actually "gone" anywhere. Their existence is just contained within a certain set of coordinates.
Back to the subject of "Arrival," I've seen a lot of reactors interpret the aliens' departure as their ships "turning invisible" or something similar, but - given how much of the movie is about the aliens experiencing time in a non-linear fashion - I interpreted the manner of their departure as meaning they could travel through time as well. It would be like if you and I were standing in a room at 5:00 pm. You continue to move forward along the timeline 1 minute at a time (as usual) but I - being able to navigate through time - decide to stop moving forward at 5:01 pm. From your point of view, when 5:02 pm came around, I'd appear to vanish. And, if you added the idea of some sort of time-traveling equivalent of velocity/acceleration, I might appear to fade out before disappearing. So, my interpretation of the way the alien ships disappeared at the end of the movie is that they began moving toward another coordinate in time and so, from our point of view, slowly faded out from our frame of reference.

This movie is a fascinating introduction into linguistics. When J said how do you even begin to try and figure out what their language is all I could remember is my weeks in linguistics classes in college thinking the exact same thing and my professor sitting down with me and breaking everything down with me. This film is so unbelievably amazing.
This movie makes me feel so much emotion. I’m so glad you guys embraced and understood how special this piece of work was. ❤ movies that bring this much emotion and otherworldliness are to cherish!!!!!
Close Encounters and this are the 2 best first contact movies ever. I highly recommend you watch it. It still stands up even though it's now almost 50 years old.
I still remember the moment when all pieces fell into place. Amazing story. Now we have to wait 3000 years for the sequel.

This movie changed my way of thinking in the best possible way. I’m less defensive. Take that as you will, but approaching people with an open mind and heart always rather than perceiving ill intentions, is more serene way to live.

Fun fact, that cloud falling off the mountains is real, actual footage. In the same scene, the military camp is fully CG.
Yep, one of the most amazing natural phenomena is real, but the most mundane thing to build is CG.
Filmed in Quebec, not Montana. Because the mountains in Q were "smaller" and did not in-frame "overwhelm" the size of the (CGI) alien ship.

Also think about non-linear perception with the aliens. They knew exactly what was going to happen beforehand, who was writing what, who was saying what, and they understood everything that was said right from the start. And... Abbott knew beforehand that he would die in this encounter and was nervous from the start...

This is a masterpiece. 🖼 I love how quiet most of the movie is, with the violence and chaos happening outside the camps only being shown in news clips. The intellectual process by which Louise and Ian learn the alien language and sort out problems is so satisfying to watch. And the lightbulb moment at the end gives me chills every time. Such an emotionally impactful story told exceedingly well. So happy you enjoyed it! ~Caroline

this is one of those movies where you can watch it a dozen times and each time you will see and figure something out that you didn't figure out from the other times you watched it. I've seen this movie five times and I'm still seeing things that I didn't get the other times.

"Canary in a coal mine". It was common practice to use birds as a warning to toxic gases. A bird will succumb quickly to bad air.
Interesting fact: Louise first words to her daughter at her birth are "Come back to me", which are the same very last words to her at her end. She starts and restarts the circle of Time.

This was such a profoundly moving experience for my wife and I when we saw it in the theater. I can SO relate to that feeling when you realize what’s going on…it just really gets the wheels in your head turning, and I know EXACTLY how you were feeling at the end! 😊
Arrival is one of the best films of the 2010’s.
When she falls sick when learning the language, was because the language was expanding brain and and was taking a toll on her, but when she came through she started seeing visions.
Hey A&J! Great reaction! I'm a big fan of your channel! :) If you watch it again, notice that when Louise and Ian first meet, Ian quotes from Louise's book when he says "Language is the first weapon drawn in a conflict." It ties into when they asked the aliens why are you here, and they responded "offer weapon."
You guys have got to watch the movie Evolution. It is a comedy about Aliens. You will laugh yourselves out of your chairs.
"I embrace it." Gets me every time.
“This is the best movie ever !” … yes, so satisfying that you felt what we all felt when the moment came when the movie’s concept is made clear for us as viewers. “abbott” came on this journey despite knowing the price, and “Louise” makes the same decision, to allow the future to unfold despite knowing what will happen. A 2nd watch is really rewarding, as you get to see all the clues to the plot twist that are presented right from the start. To realize in the early helicopter scene when Ian reads from Louise’s book that language is a weapon is not a throwaway line, but in fact the key to whole climax of “Offer weapon” … mind-boggling !
We need more smart movies like this. Movies that make people think whether they want to or not when watching a film. And still so emotional too. This is one of my favorites. Great reaction. You guys are and remain awesome as always.
You should most definitely check out Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A real Steven Spielberg classic alien movie and one of the best.
Also, we just lost an amazing Oscar winning actor this week, Louis Gossett Jr. You guys still haven't checked out An Officerand a Gentleman, A truly wonderful classic that he won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for in the Supporting Actor category opposite Richard Gere and Debra Winger.
Amy Adams has been in a ton of stuff. (Even an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"!) This is a terrific movie. I was as blown away by it as you were.
Another really good Amy Adams movie is "American Hustle". A Crime Drama/comedy with Robert DeNiro, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper.
This movie makes me cry, Every. Single. Time.
Knowing that her daughter will eventually die young, and yet still
choosing to have her. Her daughter’s life was worth living, even if it was short.
Such an amazing movie. I’m so happy that you watched it. It was definitely on the top of my recommendation list.

To have choice or death, there has to be a 'before' and an 'after', which is linear thinking.
Time isn't linear, according to this movie.
Guys, the bird was there to make sure that the air was breathable. Miners used to use Canaries down in the tunnels to make sure that there wasn’t any toxic gases or fumes.

Yes, Close Encounters is a wonderful movie, but a "dead ringer"? I must have missed the part of CE that has "if you understand the alien's language you can 'remember' the future"...

The bird is an early warning system. Something they used to do in the mining industry. Birds are very susceptible to changes in the environment. Lack of air, poisonous gas, radiation...if the bird acts sick or dies...it's time to get out quick. But seriously this is one of the best movies ever made in my mind. Just a perfect example of story telling through cinema. Glad you watched it.
You would love "Close Encounters of The Third Kind"
The reveal when Louise enters the Alien environment is a huge as the reveal in The Sixth Sense, totally mind blowing but as Jay said; How do you deal with that information. This movie is amongst the list of the top most groundbreaking movies & has made me a massive fan of Denis Villeneuve's work & you need to see his next big project 'Dune' (2021) as it is every bit as groundbreaking as this movie. Both have stunning visuals & music scores & while the story of Dune is not true to the books it is as close as a movie can be as it was said that the Dune books could never be made into a movie but he has done it real credit & I know you will both be impressed by it & with Dune Part 2 out now you will not have to wait 3 years like us.
It was forshaddowed beforehand though. If you were paying attention you noticed depictions of the aliens in the "flashbacks" and figured out they weren't actually flashbacks. I remember figuring it out about half way through the movie when I saw it in the theater. So it wasn't as much a reveal as a confirmation.
You will definitely pick up all sorts of cool stuff on a rewatch now that you know what's going on. One of my favourites that no one seems to talk about is how Louise says "Come back to me," after both Hannah's birth and death, completing the circle.
I love how at 39:14, they say that this is one of the coolest movies they've ever seen, seconds before it shifts into high gear with its major twist.
This movie is so much more than an “alien” movie. As someone who has dealt with personal loss and is now a parent, this movie really hits REAL hard in all the best ways. Glad you had a similar reaction as I did when I first saw it. You two are beautiful souls.

Denis Villeneuve is amazing at asking the hard moral questions : Would you have a child knowing despite all your love they would die young? Would you live those fleeting moments with all you have?

Seed potatoes from the Cardwell Valley are transported to Idaho and become the famous Idaho potato. There's factories, refineries and foundries, and enormous recreational potential.
We're one of those precious few states that can be completely self contained. We have a need to import almost nothing. Plus there's a little more than a million people in the entire state, so we have a ton of elbow room. It's pretty nice here, except for the fact that winter is 3/4 of the year.

What a stunning realization statement! We'd be better people if we knew the “start” and the “finish”! We'd act on every moment with precision-and use succinct words because time is of the essence.
The depth of writing, ingenious editing, the purposeful imagery using cinematography, and supremely rich dialogue have created one of the most significant revelations in a film over the last few decades. “Who is this child?” sent shockwaves through me at first watch because you realize they were flash-forwards. This movie still sticks with me and impacts my perspective since seeing it in the theater in 2016. “Despite knowing the journey” (referring to how complicated life can be) has to be the most thought-provoking contemplation on how we view our own trials and tribulations.
I was fortunate to meet the film’s cinematographer Bradford Young in 2022 (look him up-you’ll be impressed with his stellar career). I was able to tell him how much this film and its intelligence and symbolism affected me. Your reactions on this video was amazing to watch because it showed that others empathetically received the film in the same way! We’re all in this journey of life together-but on separate paths.
I was crying with Amber! I actually first saw this movie at a theater in Iowa with my husband and his parents. I didn't want to cry in front of them so I kept holding in the tears as much as possible. They were swelling on my lower eyelids about to spill over onto my face and I just kept trying so hard to keep it together! It was impossible! What a great movie! Losing a loved one hurts so bad! I don't know if I would have been able to make the same decision as Louise. I just felt like she and Ian were such a good match, and I hated that they ended up apart. Anyway, since you guys are parents, and you love deeply love your children and this beautiful planet we live on, I would highly recommend "Interstellar" with Matthew McConaughey if you haven't seen it yet. It is also an amazing movie!!! ❤️

This movie is a true masterpiece. It really didn't get the recognition it deserved when it was released. It's my favorite scifi movie of the 21st century. It doesn't belittle or treat it's audience like it's stupid, it appreciates you and makes sure you're right there with it, along for the journey. A beautiful and perfect film. I can never fully express my love for this movie.
Amy Adams... simply an amazing actress ! JuneBug, Julie & Julia, and sooo many more. Her range is superb and I have loved pretty much everything I have seen her in.
There's a 1996 (alien) Sci-Fi film called "The Arrival", starring Charlie Sheen, and Ron Silver. Very good movie.

(1982), The Thing (1982), They Live (1988), The Abyss (1989), Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (1984), Time After Time (1979), Barbarella (1968), This Island Earth (1955), Starman (1984), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), Day of the Triffids (1963), Nope (2022), Contact (1997), Forbidden Planet (1956), Alien (1979), Akira (1988), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Starship Troopers (1997), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Just naming a few of my favorite classic.
Great choice of old and modern. Totally agree with those choices. Off the top of my head I would also add District 9, Metropolis, Midwich Cuckoos, Soylent Green, Logans Run, and so many more.
Mostly though I would also WARN against the terrible remakes of War of the worlds and The day the Earth stood still.

It feels like every movie these days has to have a surprise “twist” for the sake of having a twist. They’re often either telegraphed so hard or so convoluted that when it happens it’s just like: Whoopadafreekingdoo…As a somewhat jaded veteran of overused tropes… this movie blew my freakin socks off.
I saw this in theaters, and during the scene slightly before the reveal, where Louise and Hannah are playing next to the lake, I put it together and went “OH. MY. FRIGGIN. GOD. It’s not the past, it’s the FUTURE!”
Hands down this is one of my favorite movies. So well done. It honestly gets even better with a second watch when you know the truth. So glad you all got to experience it. Great reaction! 10/10
Rushed to see this at the movies when it came out because I knew it would not be in theaters long. Loved it so much and had to have the film score, on Vinyl of course. What sounds like Sound Effects is actually the musical score! Rest In Peace to the composer Johann Johannsson.
This is how you make good science fiction. No evil alien monsters, no space battles, just a good story that you can feel and relate to.
Yay, so looking forward to watching this later, Arrival is my favorite movie!
