Interesting and nice guy, with a great attitude! I'm an American expat married to a Cebuano and living in the province by the sea. I enjoy many of your guests, although some I might not click with.:) but that's life. It's really remarkable how different many expats are, and how different their outlooks and experiences are. As far as mingling with the locals, as this man chose to do, there are many who really enjoy that sense of being surrounded by many fellow foreigners. It does make a difference in one's outlook , and experience for better or worse I think. I look forward to the next story!

I love this guy due to his comment to befriend and intermingle with local people in earnest and not in superficial way. I noticed that too, foreigners has little or nor Filipino friends at all.

Arrival cards are required only for foreigners. The airline personnel probably assumed all passengers were Filipinos.
Anilao, Mabini, Batangas is indeed a good diving spot. Just a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Manila.
Total strangers here will help you change tires.
I totally agree with the advice at the end - have local friends. The best way to do it is to join the local church and civic organizations. You will get invited to their parties.

As a former airline employee the flying benefits were the best as pay wasn’t that great. I was able to fly all around the world often in business class with my family. The airlines don’t like advertising that though because then a lot of paying customer would be upset. Most airlines have interline agreements so you can pretty much fly with most carriers. The 2000s were the best decade to do it but then the airlines went bankrupt and had to start charging for everything as you see today with baggage, food, etc.

Hi Mark. Great interview again!! Well, just let me say, I miss a clothes dryer! Haha.. In the winter and sometimes in the summer it will take 2 days for the clothes to dry here. Besides the clothes do not smell like "spring fresh" outside because of the air pollution!

I totally agree with your guests comments about being in the Philippines and meeting mainly Filipinos
Especially if one has chosen to retire here rather than having an extended stay
But of course you have to be the type of person who can go and put himself out there and chat to anyone
But if you are or if you can make the effort those chance encounters and conversations are priceless

Several years ago, my wife was visiting her Dads family in Manila when she had an emergency with her mom in Tacloban. I called Philippines Air Lines to book her a flight to her moms province, and I found out that you can pay in advance for overweight luggage, and it was really cheap, like 20 bucks per ticket. I don't know if they still have that option but worth checking. Thanks for the videos. I do enjoy them!

Maybe the Americans see the Filipinos so wonderful because they don't feel it in the US...my car in the US broke down and nobody helped me. Happily l could arrange a tow truck.
In the Philippines they do immediately but not only in the Philippines. I think the problem is the behavior of the people living in the West...

One of my biggest concerns about living in anywhere in China and even Taiwan is the “gutter oil” issue. If you’re not familiar with what “gutter oil” is look it up yourself, there are videos about it. No, you cannot make this stuff up. I’ve never heard of it being used in the Philippines and hopefully it’s not!
