ओलंपिक खेलों की उत्पत्ति प्राचीन ग्रीस में हुई थी, जो धार्मिक और खेलकूद के महत्वपूर्ण उत्सव के रूप में मनाई जाती थी। यह आयोजन पहली बार 776 ईसा पूर्व में ओलंपिया में हुआ था, जो ज़ीउस के मंदिर के पास स्थित था। ये खेल हर चार साल में एक बार आयोजित किए जाते थे और इसे ओलंपियाड कहा जाता था।
प्राचीन ग्रीस दक्षिण-पूर्वी यूरोप में स्थित था। और यहां सिकंदर महान का जन्म भी हुआ था. ग्रीस को ओलंपिक खेलों का जन्मस्थान माना जाता है प्राचीन ओलंपिक खेल सबसे पहले ग्रीस के ओलंपिया (Olympia) शहर में हुए थे, जो पेलोपोनीसस (Peloponnesus) प्रायद्वीप में स्थित था।
