3 of my sunflower successions go in my June bearing strawberry beds - as soon as the strawberries are finished for the season. I love a 5" spacing. Side note; the leaf cutting bees in my area love my sunflower leaves. They role the cuts into tubes and put their eggs inside the tubes that are then buried.
@@sydneygardener540 Actually, I have to say, after doing this last year, this year was the best producing year I have had with my strawberrries. I definitely did it again! I will say that I did not get the thousands of baby strawberry shoots that I despise dealing with, and that might be why the strawberries stored more energy for fruit producing. Either way, the lack of baby plants and the abundance of fruit was the perfect scenario.

I so appreciate this video! I’m doing a test garden and planted them the first of August in warm sunny CA so it will be interesting to see what happens. Total experiment.
One year I had a fantastic row of sunflowers 🌻 coming up nice and healthy, our Royal Palm turkey tom got out and ate those first leaves off of Every. Single. One! Sunflower micro greens were his salad for the day… Thanks for sharing these great tips!
I LOVE your videos! I would also love to learn more about how to harvest certain flowers as cut flowers. like where to cut them off the plant specifically. 🙂 You are inspiring me to try growing things I have never thought to grow! 😀
You are so great. I love your project, your videos, and specially the information is so useful and straightforward. I am on a similar path in Colombia, you are always welcome here! I wish you all the best to your little piece of paradise ❤
They topped mine as well (my pro-cuts)but they regrew with smaller side branches that were useable. You can’t eat the grass shows this in their video too. So unless you absolutely need the space, let them regrow!
Thank you for making this! I couldn't remember the spacing you said for cut sunflowers and ended up planting them too far apart! Thanks for making a very specific video ❤
Omg can you share your seed storing method! I am looking for a organized way to save my seed packets! I saw your plastic case it looks awesome! I just gave you a great idea for a video 😉 thanks
How do you clear your sunflowers out at the end of the season? I've heard no-till folks say to cut the stem level to the ground and let the root decompose over the winter (but some sunflower stems are so woody and massive, I'm doubtful they'd actually break down), so curious whether you chop the stems vs pull them by the roots on your farm.
I followed your cut flower garden plan and only two of my sunflowers came up. Any other tips for direct sowing other than frost fabric? I have them covered in pine shavings. Thanks!!
I have heard that sunflowers will put something out into the soil that inhibits growth for other flowers. Do you think that could affect the daffodils? I love this idea!! So efficient!!!
I had a lot of tulle fabric I put over top of mine. The birds just wrecked my seeds and seedlings. How long do you leave yours on for? Mine a maybe 5in tall now.
I’ve got rabbits. I put on frost cloth ag19 and my flowers are smaller now. At what point do YOU take off the frost cloth ? My rabbits ate a whole row of 8-10 in sunflowers after I took off the cloth. Uggh
How do you deal with squirrels eating the tops of my sunflowers, even when they're only a foot tall? I'm having that problem in my garden bed. Should I put tomato cages and nets over them?
You might consider planting things that attract ladybugs since ladybugs are a great way to manage aphids. In one of her recent videos (maybe the one on dried flowers?) she mentioned something she grows that attracts a lot of ladybugs, but I can't remember what it was.
There aren’t many studies on what plants are affected by allelopathy (many anecdotes though!). I like to give them their own patch in the garden because they get so tall they choke out other plants. Maintain good rotation practices with them to avoid buildup of the toxins they can produce. :)
Thank you both so much for the Question & Answer! This is what's happening to my Strawberries out front in a large pot with a Sunflower growing in the center! I was wondering! 🌻 💔 🍓
Hello from Hong Kong! Just a quick note of thanks for your excellent videos. I’m learning so much 🙏🏽✨

Probably not the greatest of idea as sunflowers are allelopathic and drain the nutrients from your resting strawberries. Just a thought for you

The bunnies topped most of the 540 Sunflowers that I planted. I was devastated! It was too late in the planting season to start more.

Sunflowers are my favorite. Thank you for your instruction..

Brilliant, I'm plugging in more sunflower seeds tomorrow.
Thanks for the tip on the frost cloth. I don’t direct sow my sunflowers because my birds and bunnies eat them. Thanks! Will try it!
😊
Thank you so much. Learned a lot again!
Thank you, I was thinking on looking for a sunflower video and yours is perfect
So curious about your seed storage / categories / container that we caught a glimpse of 🤔🤔
I think it is the Recollections Photo Box and Craft Keeper!
great info.. I use insect netting.. let's in more sunlight.
Definitely! We use frost fabric because it’s multipurpose. :) the less I have to buy the better, you know how that cheap gardening life is! 😉
Me too -it’s hot and humid for most of the summer. With insect netting I can see what’s going on without lifting a cloth row cover.
@@gr8gardn yes totally 👏

How long do you leave frost fabric on? Also any other tips to deter rabbits?
That is great, concise information, thank you! ❤
Try Mexican sunflowers. Small blooms, branching & perfect orange blooms. I’m nuts about them.
Sounds lovely!

Daffodils, do, as well... I've never had luck interplanting sunflowers in my daffs.
@@homesteadingonthehomefront I didn’t know that about daffodils! I’m pretty inexperienced with bulbs. Thanks!!
Great video! When do you harvest? Closed, open?
When one petal starts to peel up from the center!!

Very cool seed saver. Could you provide a link for it?
I have ants in my sunflowers... any suggestions that would be safe for pets also?
How do you deal with squirrels eating the tops of my sunflowers, even when they're only a foot tall? I'm having that problem in my garden bed. Should I put tomato cages and nets over them?
We leave that fabric on until they’re behind eating! Should have mentioned that-we don’t remove until they’re a couple feet tall!
My sunflower have aphids right now, do you have any natural recommendations to get rid of aphids?
You might consider planting things that attract ladybugs since ladybugs are a great way to manage aphids. In one of her recent videos (maybe the one on dried flowers?) she mentioned something she grows that attracts a lot of ladybugs, but I can't remember what it was.
Yikes.. Watching this on our large TV, all I could focus on was the spider in your hair starting from 1:16 til 1:40 The legs on it 😮
Thank you! I think slugs are eating our sunflowers.
I know Sunflowers stunt the growth of some things like Okra. Do you know of any flowers that don’t like to grow with Sunflowers?
