Playstation Miles feels a lot like a mirrored version of Into The Spider-Verse Miles: -Spider-Verse miles lost a perfect Peter Parker and got a janky hobo one instead. Playstation Miles still had his Peter, who I think has more in like with the Perfect Peter than Peter B. Despite the differences, both stories at their core are about stepping out the Peter Parker shadow, just in very different medium appropriate ways. Love it.
I mostly agree with your comment except your 2nd point, Insomniac Peter Parker isn't the perfect blond Peter Parker because while only playing this game makes it seem that way, the first game shows struggle with his relationship with Mary Jane. he's constantly late for work because he's almost always out there saving someone, and gets evicted for the same reason, at the beginning he even has to between paying the rent and heading out to stop FIsk, hell the reason he accompanies MJ on her journalist report to Symkaria is because he lost his job at the end of the last game and he has to do freelance work for the bugle now.

Me: this would be a much deeper analysis if he discussed Miles' relationship with his uncle Aaron- NEXT TIME: THE PROWLER Me: oh... right then, carry on.
In my opinion Spider-Verse Miles was easily the best one, it truly felt like Miles becomes his own character. He becomes Spider-Man, not just another Peter. For his game version I don't feel like he was unique enough to really earns his place as a different Spider-Man, one that can stand side by side to Peter. The whole community part of the game felt more like just him helping 5 people in the city, and not really all of Harlem as a whole. As for his Ultimate origins, I've always had a problem with how the writers presented his family practically his uncle always using him for his own agenda and his fathers very unique job. It took a lot out of the whole "Miles is just your average kid" pitch. Spider-Verse rectifies this with Prowlers death being Miles "uncle ben moment" and his father just being a police officer, focusing more on his relationship with his son rather than his job as a FBI agent. The game does this fairly well too with Aaron trying to stop Miles from fighting so he doesn't die, but eventually coming to terms that Miles can't run from his battles. Great video as always, I enjoy hearing you thoughts just wanted to pitch in my own.
I'm definitely more of a fan of confident/artistic miles, over scientific/nerdy miles. I think the nature of his powers vs. Peter's gadgets also reinforces this. Miles can't just invent a gadget like Peter can to solve a situation, so he has to be more creative with the powers he has in order to win. I think that's an under utilised part of the character.
Came back here after watching the new Across the Spiderverse movie. It’s been amazing getting to appreciate all the different themes and stories the “Spider-Man” identity explores and the ways that comparing them reveals even deeper themes. I’m fascinated by the different ways Peter Parker and Miles interpret their sense of responsibility based on the way they relate to their community. Peter always seems to feel a need to sacrifice and sees responsibilities as a burden or sacrifice whereas Miles seems to have a stronger support system so his responsibility means living up to his best self to increase his connection. I’m excited to see more of Mikes pushing to “do both” as they say in the new film. Also, I really appreciate the way you use the literary analysis and quotes to talk about each of these! I always learn a lot from these vids. It feels like watching the movie a second time and going even deeper with it.
I really didn't expect you to use material from comics for this video, but I couldn't be more happy about it! Any chance you could do that more often? 🙏
I honestly really liked this video. Honestly. Though, I do feel like Into The Spiderverse should’ve had its own video. You said that it’ll be mainly focused on the movie, but this feels like a perfect mix of all three. And so it feels like the spiderverse episode is missing, despite it not existing
Miles in the game is the best imo. He learned to make sacrifices he didn't like and preserved. Comic Miles was probably the saddest one tho. Having to lose Spiderman, his mom and uncle, and blaming himself for the cause of their deaths
Hey implicitly pretentious, I have a question now that you’ve covered every Spider-Man movie. Will you make a video about what you think the next MCU Spider-Man is gonna be about, how the themes tie up in the end and who you think will be involved, will the story center squarely on peter? You know, things like that🙂
Idk if I'm supposed to pay for a patreon to suggest something, but u should do videos on the clone sagas. Comparing the Amazing and Ultimate versions. Along with the Spider-People in em.
Spider-verse is my favorite Spider-man movie, I just finished the PS5 game and picked up the Ultimate Omnibus. These videos are just what I was looking for. Thank you. See you at 100K subscribers.
Lololol a mostly pretty poignant video about trauma, but then you see his Spidey wearing the fucking winter costume with the goofy lookin' scarf and beanie... love it.
My fiancée pretty actively disliked Spider-Man until we watched Into the Spider-Verse and she met Miles (and Gwen, to be fair). She is a diehard DC kid, and the sense of legacy and community spoke hard to her. Now she's not only warmed up to Peter, she's made it very clear that I'm in trouble if I don't add the upcoming Spider-Verse Marvel Legends toys to our collection (she's stoked for the Miles PS5 game, too). I ramble, sorry. Great video(s) as always, looking forward to the Prowler vid, and happy holidays!
I really wish I could like Spider-Verse more than I do, but the cultural context surrounding it makes the plot of Spider-Verse pretty frustrating. Phil Lord and Chris Miller used to seem like they'd be pretty good creators of quirky movies and TV, with Clone High, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The (first and second) Lego Movie(s), the 21 Jump Street movies, and The Last Man on Earth, but then they were involved in dumpster fires like Hoops and America: The Motion Picture, which were not only bad, but so bad that it made me feel the need to look back on some of Lord and Miller's works with a much more critical eye as to why they made them. I feel like they only became comic book "fans" in the wake of the mid-2010s superhero boom, and felt like the only way to engage with superheroes was from a trendy aggressive-progressive perspective downplayed just enough for their movies to be family-friendly four-quandrant successes. In hindsight, The Lego Batman Movie feels more like a 90-minute-long "Batman is a whiny rich White guy" joke than a so-called "celebration" of the character's history. Spider-Verse is something a little more subtle, but its usage of the phrase "anyone can wear the mask," complete with all of the Representation Matters subtext of that line, makes it seem more like they were hoping to win the audience over with nothing but a Black Spider-Man, or implicitly act like Miles is an inherently better Spider-Man simply because he's Black, without telling a story that actually shows how diversity, whether of thought or skin color/gender/sexual orientation, makes people better. I think the movie would be a lot better if Morlun was the villain, going around the multiverse killing Peter Parkers, and able to do it so much because the personality and physchology of a Peter Parker is so predictable, so only a non-Peter Parker or otherwise non-PP Spider-Person can defeat Morlun. It would be something about Miles' personality and psychology as a Black-Latino teenager from Brooklyn whose parents and uncle are alive and whose dad is a cop and his uncle is a career criminal, or Gwen's personality and psychology as a White young woman from one of New York City's wealthier districts whose Peter Parker is dead but her cop dad is alive, rather than Peter's personality and psychology as a White guy from Queens from Brooklyn whose parents and uncle are dead and who spent his early days as a superhero living with his elderly aunt, that defeats Morlun. Morlun would initially think very little of non-PP Spider-People until one manages to defeat him. It would be a much better plot-motivated way to show how "anyone can wear the mask" and why Spider-Man shouldn't be linked to only one combination of identity politics than just a catchy tagline and a Black superhero at the right cultural moment. I feel like people were so happy with the animation and to see a Miles Morales movie that they couldn't see any other flaws in the movie. I definitely agree that the animation was the best part of the movie, and I still wish that Sony didn't completely own the animation style so that Warner Animation Group could make a Batman Beyond animated movie in the same style or something like that (as opposed to, say, DC League of Super-Pets). Spider-Man: Miles Morales for the PS4 and PS5 told a better story, even if it's kind of recycled from the first Insomniac Spider-Man game, and often got WAY too preachy and on-the-nose with its handing of its socio-political themes, not to mention its overly idealistic and unrealistic portrayal of politicians like Rio Morales, because even most progressives know that there are no politicians at any level, not even progressive ones, that are as inherently good and flawless as we're expected to see Rio as. (Of course, there are a few people who somehow think that Spider-Man: Miles Morales wasn't preachy or on-the-nose ENOUGH, so if you are one of those people, please stay away from me.) I used to have a lot more hope that the Spider-Verse sequel, which we now know to be a two-part movie subtitled Across the Spider-Verse, would be a better story due to having more of a focus on Miles, but considering that one of its screenwriters is David Callaham, who worked with Lord and Miller on America: The Motion Picture, I have super-low expectations for the movie. Look, I know MJ said that if you always expect disappointment, then you can never be disappointed, but if you were a major name on America: The Motion Picture, I think it's pretty easy to both expect disappointment and end up more disappointed afterwards.
Miles usually comes of as a cheap black token character for marvel, only reason I see that they picked Spider-Man to be his hero identity was to make him relevant and popular. I feel like if he wasn’t Spider-Man no one would actually care about him, I know this would be the same for peter but he has around 60+ years of history to back him up. Miles was only made around 2011 I’m pretty sure, so they really should’ve focused on him more than his hero life. The comics/bendis tried but he came of way to needy and needing to be like peter syndrome, it dragged his stories not to mention is bullshit powers made his stories less compelling to me. His family life was also pretty unrelatable, with his dad being a shield agent (which was so stupid btw). Spider verse did something different it grounded him a lot, his dad is just a cop, he doesn’t even attempt to be a peter token clone, he makes his own decisions and I actually felt something for the character. Point is with the video game I feel he just doesn’t have enough screen time, he was barely in Spider-Man ps4, when he was he was painfully average. Nothing interesting at all going on with him until the spider bite, that’s when they decided to focus heavily on him. It’s a poor attempt to adapt him, insomniac only cares about Spider-Man not MILES. I’m still gonna support them but I’m disappointed in pretty much any miles morales other than spider verse, cause we actually focus on miles himself not the mask.
For your first point about how nobody would care about him if he wasn't spiderman you could see this proven with how riri jackson(ironheart) replaced iron man but was hated and nowhere near as popular
@@RingsideSumo true, I’m guessing most casuals like miles because he’s just a black peter a lot of the time, he’s got nothing new going in except his race really.
@@VerticlSpoon if they didn’t care why did they make a game about him without Peter Parker involved, why give him a prequel book, why give him new swinging, tricks and combat animations why did they bother to bring in his Puerto Rican heritage?
so phinn suffers from "an inability to process time" - and arrogance. Lmao, what? Phinn has such a sensible, straightforward, value-driven plan, and I'm triiiiiping at commentators just glossing over her framing as a villain like it makes any sense. Roxxon bulldozed several blocks of Harlem to build this reactor for their profit at the expense of the health of the community. So, she tries to destroy the thing what makes everyone sick and force Roxxon to leave by beating up their guards. This could have been the plot for Miles and no one would have had a problem with it. Bad guy make disaster machine -> beat up bad guy, break machine. Literally the moment she realizes she's mistaken about the reactor, she sacrifices her life to save Harlem. She doesn't believe Miles because his story is implausible ("I ran the numbers myself!" - indeed, the reactor is gonna blow bc of last minutes *changes* phinn doesn't know about) and because at this point Miles has betrayed her trust twice in consequential ways. But nah, let's just keep pretending the story earned that "Im sorry" moment at the end. Just... ugh. She doesn't even use questionable means! The underground has like zero symbolic baggage to overcome - they were cut from whole cloth for this story. Phinn convinces them to fight for her by making them weapons, and they use money taken from Wilson Fisk to build them. Almost all they do in the game is fight Roxxon's weird fascist paramilitary goons. They aren't characterized as doing random or violent crime - they're almost always conflicting with the exact same people Miles is. Why are they bad guys? Ugh... look, I think it upsets me bc Phinn is clearly a stand in for the ephemeral "rioter" and "looter" of contemporary activist discourse. The conflict is about the ethics of direct action in the political sense. Phinn is the for and Miles is the against. The game comes down solidly against Phinn, and so against the kind of political violence she represents, but in its attempt to be hip and woke about it all, it undercuts that conclusion. Phinn is right - Miles has no argument at all, and frankly is doing the exact same thing Phinn is. His opposition is arbitrary and nonsensical. "Someone might get hurt!" shouts the guy who just accidentally dropped a helicopter in the middle of the street. Says the guy who actually blew up the bridge after bungling an otherwise smooth, victimless theft. And why? So this mass produced commodity can be appropriately reflective of the status quo. Like, sure we'll put a BLM graffiti texture in there but only if we're allowed to condemn political radicals out the other side of our mouth. Jesus, can I get a "Phinn did nothing wrong?"
1- Works with people who have a history of putting lives endanger by fighting for top spot against the demons and Wilson Fisk. 2- Beats Miles unconscious for stopping her from killing the rhino because he said bad things about Rick 3- endangers civilians by starting fights with Roxxon guards at Rio's rally, and in some cases injured people as well (Rio morales being an example, as she was hurt BEFORE miles arrived on the scene as Spider-Man) 5- Mostly in the sake of vengeance rather then "because it's right" Phinn isn't the unreasonable person people think she is, but she most definitely isn't doing this out of the "kindness of her heart". The video in her hide out clearly shows that this is an act of vengeance not altruism. She most definitely did a few things "wrong".

I really wish I could like Spider-Verse more than I do, but the cultural context surrounding it makes the plot of Spider-Verse pretty frustrating. I used to have a lot more hope that the Spider-Verse sequel, which we now know to be a two-part movie subtitled Across the Spider-Verse, would be a better story due to having more of a focus on Miles, but considering that one of its screenwriters is David Callaham, who worked with Lord and Miller on America: The Motion Picture, I have super-low expectations for the movie. Look, I know MJ said that if you always expect disappointment, then you can never be disappointed, but if you were a major name on America: The Motion Picture, I think it's pretty easy to both expect disappointment and end up more disappointed afterwards.

I like that he leans into the trauma thing.
The best thing to happen to miles in storytelling is making aron not a dick and become one of the best supporting characters
The hamster clips just assure me that everything is going to be ok.
1 Peter 5:7 “Turn all your anxiety over to God because he cares for you.” Jesus loves you dont give up on him!❤!
Trauma is beaten by awareness.
Nice
The word " Trauma " , comes from the greek word " τράυμα" and it kinda means the same thing
What is this malfunction in my eyes producing a leakage?
so phinn suffers from "an inability to process time" - and arrogance.
No
Yes
1- Works with people who have a history of putting lives endanger by fighting for top spot against the demons and Wilson Fisk.
2- Beats Miles unconscious for stopping her from killing the rhino because he said bad things about Rick
3- endangers civilians by starting fights with Roxxon guards at Rio's rally, and in some cases injured people as well (Rio morales being an example, as she was hurt BEFORE miles arrived on the scene as Spider-Man)
5- Mostly in the sake of vengeance rather then "because it's right"
Phinn isn't the unreasonable person people think she is, but she most definitely isn't doing this out of the "kindness of her heart". The video in her hide out clearly shows that this is an act of vengeance not altruism.
She most definitely did a few things "wrong".
Trauma!
What if I play Miles morales in the Mcu
Ur kindergarten teacher would be proud
Trauma!!
Wow, you like the word trauma don't you.
His dad was a cop.
IMO Phin is annoying as heck in the game. They wasted the Thinkerer
Could’ve warned of spoilers all them clips of the new game caught me off guard
