The most impressive part is not his speed , but the way he handled the disappointment. I would be crying and blaming everything. Great lesson learned. True champion
The idea to start far ahead of course record at your first 100miler is foolish to say the least. That's like you never have done a Marathon before, run the half Marathon 5 minutes faster than Kipchoge's WR pace, and wonder that you can't stand the pace. Well, there passes the first runner, the second,... the first woman, the next runner ... and finally starting first finishes 20th. I think, he needed this humiliation to become humble.
@@rennleitung_7 his speed or endurance wasn't really an issue, he said he missed the turn while on the highway and ran essentially an extra 4 miles. He probably could've broken the course record if he didn't get lost.
@annaschiltz7171 I don't question his endurance. My take-away is, there's no price for the fastest or longest detour. I will not run a 100 miler anytime soon, but maybe a 50. In my experience exhaustion grows with distance. As they say at the beginning of the video, you have to do your homework. That means to me, I have to make sure to stay on the track even if I can't spell my name anymore. But different people have different experiences and so different take-aways.
Coming back after Jim's UTMB course record win. "You have to dream big. If you don't see yourself reaching those goals, you will never gonna do it. Whether you are a person that talks about it or doesn't talk about it, you have to believe in yourself and really have to see yourself doing those goals." So many people has the raw talent, but only a few has the determination and the courage to reach the top, what a champion's heart Jim has!
It’s pretty crazy to see his last few (four) blocks walking to the finish line at Placer HS. I literally live one street over and two years ago, I couldn’t make it up the hill walking he was going down. Now I am about to do a 5k and ran my PB since 7th grade. What an inspirational film. I feel blessed to get to live here in good ol’ Auburn. PS: my mom won the Teva cup in the 80s on horseback.
So inspirational Jim! Thanks for staring your journey! I started running 6 months ago (I'm 45 and lost 40 lbs since then). I just completed my longest run at 11 miles. Going to start running trails.. you have inspired me!
@Jonathan Verrill I have a 10K race on April 22nd. I would like to finish 55 minutes or so. I did 8 x 400m intervals last night and the faster pace felt good.
He was on film so he was being "politically correct". He should have balled them out for not marking the course well. He should not have been wondering where to turn near mile 90 of the course!!! Bad job by the Western States course markers....
This guy has the most beautiful stride. Love to watch him run. Loved hearing about Bonnett's history with the race. Great film, Jamil! Well done! Hoping for course record this year.
Chris It’s momentum and flexibility not strength that causes the high kick. It also has the effect of shortening the lever arm making the turnover easier to do faster.
Great coverage of his attempt at course record. Such a shame about missing the turn. Couldn't imagine the mental strength required to continue from there.
Most ultra runners have this pained shuffle going on, then there's Walmsley, who looks like he's just out for a 3-mile rip in between some errands or something lol
Besides being a great documentary of Walmsley's first Western States, these music tracks are BANGERS holy cow - that Twenty Seconds Later track overlaying Jim running would inspire anyone on a treadmill workout or just want to get up and go out for a run!! Fire!!
Wow ! One of the most powerful and inspiring sports films I've seen for a long time. His grace as an athlete and as a man faced with a crushing blow so near to triumph was deeply moving. Best of luck to him in the next edition of the race. He's one of a kind
It WAS inspiring...until he took a wrong turn! And didn't win and didn't set the course record. Then it became a SAD STORY and reminded me of bad course management and terrible course markings!!! Not that that is the typical case at a "class" event such as Western States 100... Like the time I ran hard to get to my drop bag, only to find it was NOT THERE...
Love Jim, what a way to handle the finish. He came back next year and DNF due to stomach issues, and when everyone thought he had a curse on that course, he showed the world how amazing he is! great film!
Great film Jamil and crew! Watching Jim walk with his mom and slap hands with the kids were the high points for me. Showed his true passion for the sport and distance. Best of luck this year Jim!
Seems like the best ultra distance runners are just amazing people. I think the experience of going that far strips away all the junk and what’s left is a wonderful person.
Stunning...everything about this runner, his accomplishments, and this fantastic film. Such class and humility. Jim you are such an inspiration. Be blessed. Well done all for this fantastic film and thank you!
Incredible work! Well worth the wait and I think the timing of the release of the movie is perfect as we lead up to Western States just a couple days away. Masterfully done Jamil, congrats on an amazing film!
Worth the wait! Awesome job Jamil. This makes such a better story than just beating the course record. Good luck Jim this weekend. Hoping everything is magical.
This man is incredible not just because hes a runner 100 mile finisher but his courage grit but most importantly his attitude after such a sad turn of events he still smiling. Wow no one can take his joy.
Amazing film! A true champion. I know this guy just for two days (via youtube and internet) and he is already one of the most inspiring personalities in my life. He runs on the clouds....
I've been waiting for this to drop and it did disappoint! I laughed when I heard what happened to Walmsley last year but seeing it first hand made me cry. There is nothing wrong with dreaming big, especially when you have the raw talent and work ethic to back it up. Thanks for making this film, it is inspiring and beautiful.
Jim's such strong runner & competitor with a great attitude and Jamil such a great film maker, I can't understand the thumbs down. Great job to all!!! Thumbs Up!!!
You guys really created a ...wait for it....GEM!!! Well worth the wait for this. Y'all knocked it out of the park. Amazing footage of such a historic run. Well done team!
As much hype and pure aww involved with that first attempt, his failure is going to make this years success even more incredible. When he crosses that finish line this year it's going to break the world. GO Walmsley!!!!!
Amazing. I have found at least one thing that we have in common. I took a wrong turn with a lot fewer miles, did not have to fight a river current and had not put forth near that much effort. Excellent Jim.
Jim has amazing character. He's tells the honest truth about his pain, it's real you can see it. Thank you Jim for sharing the whole story of your life not just the good parts. A true hero.
Frickin' hell. What a class act Jim is. I was impressed by Rob Krar, but this... legend stuff. Thank you for making and sharing that film everyone! 2017 race starts in 2 days and this is going to be epic - plus the incredible women participant list.
super super work Jamil. although, you may not get notified of these comments. this was very well put together. loved it. epic edit. routing for you Jim this weekend. your going to crush it
he may win many more races.. but I have more respect for how he lost. Kept going.. Total heart. This is what its all about. We learn more in failure than success
Love love love! Jim is such a rad guy and totally inspirational. Not that I know him personally or anything, but Jim if you see this, I wanna buy you a beer young man! I can say young man because I'm older than you haha. The part when you were holding your mom's hand and she said "Now, go run." Tears! So real. Happy running everyone!
about to embark on the david goggins 4x4x48 challenge starting tonight. came here for motivation from jim and his story. this guy is such an inspiration for me. calm and honest through everything.
I have to Sprint to run as fast as he runs 100 mile race. I trained all the time but it still Takes Me 2 hours to run 10 miles. What I do and what he does are totally different. But it is much harder for me so I am more heroic.

@Joe Spivey, how is the running going now? I am one month into my running journey at 56 and just did my first 6 mile run.

Tuesdays Runner - on camera or not. He still handled it with class.
Touching to see his friends and family all walk the end with him. I hope he breaks the record someday.
@@darrinsiberia he broke the record by 18 minutes in 2018 and then broke his own record again by a further 20 minutes in 2019 👌

Danelle Soto - I agree! His stride is a thing of beauty!
Danelle Soto he kicks his legs up so high behind him, my legs would be soooo tired!!
Couldn't agree more!!
Chris It’s momentum and flexibility not strength that causes the high kick. It also has the effect of shortening the lever arm making the turnover easier to do faster.
Makes me look like a rusty robot with a hangover.
this was so heartbreaking, he deserved that course record!!! What an amazing runner, he is truly one of the best ultra runners I've seen!
Just watched this again after Jim's fantastic performance at the 2018 Western States 100. He finally did it!
He broke the record?
@@darrinsiberia yeah, he did. Then broke his record again the next year by twenty minutes

One of the most elegant runners. Considering his likely deep disappointment and frustration, his ability to be so humble about it is outstanding.
if your goals don't scare you, they're not big enough!
thats not really true.
whatever, you are going to argue with a motivational verse? Fuck off
TericNoah but there has to be truth to it or it's just some gibberish that was spit out.
I agree - big goals don't have to scare you. You might have vision in which case you're propelled by a very decent force...
😎👍👍👍
He runs so beautifully, I could watch him run all day :))
I am very impressed with the woman in the purple shorts, keeping up with him.
I always wondered who that was
Sister gf friends gf who knows.
He's definitely one of the best at his craft. Beautiful long and paced stride he makes it look easy

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
