I'm a White guy who grew up in the suburbs of DC and I love this album for highlighting DC as a Black cultural center. Even I feel second-hand pride listening to this album.
I was in the 8th grade in DC when this song came out...and all of DC was riding high on this jam! I read somewhere that George said this album was a tribute to the loyal fan base from DC. Funkadelic hardcore groupies and followers were deeply woven in the city before P-Funk became the big mega Group of the mid to late 70's... the early Funk Mob shit! Trippy rock laden Funk! When Funkadelic was considered an "underground" Group/Act. They used to open for War, Mandrill and other groups that had more mainstream hits on the radio. Funkadelic seemed to be in DC's culture. I use Funkadelic because Parliament came back on the scence with "Up for the Down stroke" later, but Funkadelic was the Top Dog during the early 70's. I think George and some members even lived here at some point. I know the "band" started in NJ and recorded in Detroit, but in the early 70's I thought Funkadelic was one of DC's local bands because they were here performing so often with local bands. Labelle was here very often also then. Lastly, when this album came out PFunk was here in DC at the Capital Centre on New Years Eve night. I begged my oldest sister and her boyfriend to go with them to the show. It was my 1st concert. A replica of the album cover was on the stage and the monument or Capital fell down while they were performing. Parliament-Funkadelic, Rare Earth, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and Betty Davis opened the show... I will never forget that show. Everybody blew me away. Betty Davis and her band "Was a Beast". She really blew me away! Wish she could have gone further. Wow...Memories!!!
What a fantastic show ! You was so lucky to see all that funk and soul at one concert,I bought all Betty Davis s stuff in London when it came out on import,so funky ,raw and beautiful too ,had her poster behind me on my bedroom wall as a kid !
