It's opening season in the garden! We've had a string of warm weather which means we are ahead by about 2 weeks. We direct sowed peas, arugula, cilantro and dill and used milk jugs to create mini greenhouses for them in case the weather turns sour later in the month.
We also made a decision to plant the onions out after looking at the long term forecast showing no temperatures in the 20s for 10 days. We planted the following varieties: sierra blanca, cabernet, patterson and super sweet yellow Utah jumbo. We planted a total of 224 plants in a 12x4 foot raised bed.
Back in the seed starting room we potted up our brassicas. These are less cold hardy than onions so we generally plant them out early April. We also started our peppers: watch to the end to see a list of varieties!

You had some very good helpers! Thank you for showing how you plant and especially WHY, I have been gardening for about 4 years now, and know I still have so much to learn. I love it though!

I can grow them from seed but they stay really small, even after 2 months. Are you fertilizing them indoors? If so, with what? What lights do you use and how far away are they? Wondering if I’m burning mine.

Hi Karis? I’m assuming you’re talking about the onions? For lights I use t5 fluorescent lights when they are very small and then a high powered LED starting at week 3 (ViparSpectra xs4000). For fertilizer I do a very dilute (1/3rd the concentration for indoor plants) light watering of water soluble fertilizer at every watering starting around week 3 also. If they flop over you can give the tops a trim as well

Do you find you don’t need to water again until they sprout?

Generally in spring with the little greenhouse on there is no need to water them! Just wait until the conditions are right for them to sprout =)
