Tackling America’s Still Active & Deadliest Volcano

  • When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980 amid earthquakes and avalanches, it became the deadliest and most costly volcanic eruption in US history. The energy unleashed was eight times more powerful than every bomb dropped during WWII combined -- including the two atom bombs! The north face of the mountain collapsed and the massive avalanche triggered by the explosive blast toppled nearly 150 square miles of forest; destroying bridges, roads, buildings and tragically killing 57 people.
Today, Mount St. Helens is a national monument where scientists continue to monitor the still-active volcano and adventurers can spend days exploring the mesmerizing landscapes. We go inside the remarkable two mile-long Ape Cave -- the longest lava tube in the lower 48 -- hike through uncharted new and old growth forests in search of an elusive waterfall and then climb to the summit where the forces of magma and lava have formed a new dome that is rapidly growing in size each year. Scientists say Mount St. Helens will definitely erupt again -- so we better hurry!

I live in Olympia ( I was a teenager during the 1980 eruption) so I'm super familiar with the St Helen's area, even from back in the day when you could swim in Spirit Lake! But this past summer I had a completely unexpected view of our old friend St Helen's..........from the sky! My son and I went on a small plane right around the rim. Holy cow! That's a view I will never get over! We're planning a helicopter ride down the lahar pathway for next summer.

I was interested in the story of your camera man/people because they are doing a great job and sometimes, it seems they have the most challenging job, like on your climb of Devil's Tower. They must be a big part of your team but they seems to be neglected which surprises me. It this an old buddy, who just doesn't like to be on camera, or from a group of people who can do the job if they are available? Regardless, great show.

Totally! In fact, Devils Tower was a hard one. We all had to train for a few days ahead of that and our camera people were hanging from ropes off the cliff side. We found a few camera operators and others that loved what we were doing and they have since become good friends. Also, my brother and cousin were on the team at points too 👍🏽 -Jack

Rocky mountain elk have the largest antlers. Roosevelt elk have smaller antlers, but larger bodies than rocky mountain elk

Great video. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m almost 66 years old and it’s been a dream of mine to hike Mt. St. Helens. I wish I had you two as tour guides. LOL

Really cool stuff. Seeing the climbers route makes me thankful I did the winter route.
The waterfall makes me want to go back out there and scope it out.

Congrats! Washington native here, I've also summited St Helen's, still haven't done the Ape caves yet, was going to afterwards but by then i was pretty beat and had a one track mind wanting to find a good burger to devour on the way back home...it's kind of become a tradition for me after hiking to the top of a mountain, I find a nearby mom and pop type burger joint. I've found quite a few good places so far

Glad you enjoyed it!! Colton and I chat all the time, in fact we just caught up again the other day. Unfortunately he lives in Georgia and we’re up in Minnesota, so adventures aren’t as frequent. But I’m really hoping we can again soon!

Hi Jack….l follow your other channel Tiny Cabin Life, but found out about this channel maybe a month or so ago….I saw this title and knew I needed to watch this because I live in WA, but moved here after Mt. St. Helen’s erupted, but I have heard so many stories from people who were here then. Are you still doing footage for this channel along with your other? You do look younger in this video…..the views that you saw and shared with us are spectacular! I know I will never hike to the summit, or the waterfall either, for that matter……

Awesome!! So glad you found your way over here too! So these episodes are from anywhere between 2013-2018 so they’re a little bit older but we’ve been trying to release more of the episodes that never made it onto the channel. And who know, if it does well, we might make new ones again too! It’s definitely a different feel than Tiny Cabin Life 👍🏽👍🏽
