In context, this was at a James Brown concert. Michael Jackson and Prince were only there to watch. James spotted them both and called them to the stage. This was before Thriller and Purple Rain dropped as albums. Prince was about to release his 1999 album, and Michael had dropped Off The Wall by this point. Prince was intoxicated that night (this was early in his career, and he was still dappling in alcohol before he stopped). This is the ONLY time Prince and Michael ever shared a stage. Footnote, Michael Jackson's song "Bad" was originally supposed to be a duet with Prince, but Prince didn't approve of the lyrics and turned it down. In the Bad video, Wesley Snipess appearance was supposed to be Prince. Prince did an interview with Chris Rock where he talks about this. @@PurplRainn Well not really...don't know if you're old enough to remember but prince was non existent in 90s and 00s. He was only relevant in 80s when he was up against MJ. Lastly MJ produced, performed, wrote too or are you living on another planet?
Yeah James put them both on the spot, they were not expecting to perform. In the uninterrupted footage you could see and hear Michael tell James that Prince was in the audience.Prince didn't like that, its documented.
1:35 While it's true that Prince and MJ were peers and had a competitive relationship, they didn't necessarily inspire each other directly. James Brown the Godfather of Soul was the major inspiration for both MJ & Prince having been before their times.
Lots of people dont know this, but MJ wanted to be inconspicuous here. His people spoke with James browns people NOT to bring him up on stage, but obviously someone never told James Brown. Thats why MJ looked perterbed
Back in them days Prince used to get f__ked up! and Prince was mad at Mike for telling James he was in the audience.Clearly Prince was caught off guard and was high as hell Prince fell off the stage this is not the full tape.
I personally believe the racist industry pitted Mj and Prince against each other. The industry always pit powerful Black performers against each other ex: MJ vs Prince, Rihanna vs Beyonce, Usher vs Chris Brown, Drake vs Kanye. Look at how Rock and Country music orginated from African Americans, and how these genres were stolen and gentrified and Black American artists are marginalized into urban categories of music like Hip Hop that has become a multi trillion dollar industry that glorifies division and beef and violence between rappers😢😢😢😢 Hip hop does not thrive without Black male or female performers being against each other. Isnt pop culture currently glorifying the beef between Nicki and Megan. The world does not do this to white performers.
Such is life..WHEREVER YOU GO..The powers that be will divide. It is one's own responsibility ,not to fall for the okie doke..Being a crying victim is part of the problem
As other people have said. You have no clue. It's like you want the world to acknowledge your racism. You go to bed racist and wake up racist. It's your calling card. Your purpose.
Keep your twisted beliefs to yourself. The industry is evil no doubt, but if you think it is about anything other than money, then you are ignorant. And if you believe only 1 race should be able to make a certain style of music, then you are a racist. I'm honored if people from around the world enjoy my culture.
