- What’s a safety capacitor? What’s are the differences between X, Y and XY safety capacitors? Find out in this quick one minute tutorial.
About One Minute Tutorials:
I often include short tutorials in my videos. But they’re hard to find when you just want a quick answer to a question. So I’ve created this One Minute Tutorial series:
• Short snippets from my videos.
• A quick lesson without a lot of fuss.

I've always called them "Death Cap". This is very useful information.
¿Esta bien utilisarlo para audio tanbien ,en amplificadores en sierto planos que requieren dicho valor , como 220pf,330pf ?
They will work, but perhaps not the most ideal choice for audio applications.
Do have one question. In older tube radios they use a wax capacitor I have one that is a .047 at 200 volts. Can a disc. cap. replace this type of cap.? if so what value would you use?
In some cases it’s ok to replace an old wax/paper cap with a disc capacitor, but generally they’re replaced with a film type.
Are snubber caps (for both rectifiers and/or power switch) Y type?
I believe they’re a different class of capacitor altogether. And while they can be self-healing, I don’t believe they use the X, Y, or XY designation found on safety caps. If anyone knows more, please join the discussion.
Don’t capacitors pass ac? Please tell me why they don’t make a short across the line. Thanks!
Capacitors can also be used as filters whereas the capacitance value affects the frequencies that it will allow to pass. Think of capacitors in a crossover network, for example. The line capacitors use a capacitance value that creates a high-pass filter. So, the low 60Hz frequency of the line AC is blocked.
XY capacitors... how do you test the karyotype? :D
😆
What if my house installation only have 2 wire, live and neutral ?
Is this the cause, why my pc sometimes give me shock when i touch the case?
Because i manage to open my pc psu and find out theres 2 blue safety cap in main connector
Short and very clear explanation. Trick to remember X and Y is very good :-) Thanks
Really objetive, I apreciate it ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
can a safety capacitor protect the circuit from a lightning strike?
No
