I’m team Claymore. Not only because of the history behind it but how much it reminds me of Andúril from Lord of The Rings.
That is the most valid reason for preferring the Claymore

This is the better vertion of “katana vs longsword”
zombie go boom did a better comparison but even then their conclusion ended on preference which is fine
longsword wins.
Falchion or 10th century Paramerion vs Uchigatana would be a better comparison.
You do should learn Kata=1sided/edge & ka=blade & so any 1sided sword like a Dao, Talwar, sabre, cutlass, falchion etcetera is a katana.
Nihontou katana would at least imply a traditional Japanese single edged sword.
Another thing most are not a aware is a Katana is compound word for from kata=1 edge/1side implying a single edge & na=Blade as in any blade.
Katana meqns any single edged blade & so a chinse Dao is a Katana, so are sabres from Eurasia, Talwar from India, falchions from Europe etcetera.
Information I have saved from prior writings as it got tedious as follows:
A shaku=11.9 inches roughly & this old Japanese measurement before the Meiji restoration is what ever thing including nihontou=traditional Japanese bladed weapons that is every bladed weapon so Yari or naginata to name a few besides swords.
A blade length under 1 shaku to 1/2 a shaku is a Tantou that are are either large daggers or very short swords depending on perception.
From 2 to 1 shaku you have 2 types of sword being the wakaazashi & Kodachi which differ in construction because of how they are mounted worn.
Wakazahi's sheath is smooth with no added obstruction for the stuba/guard was none or very small so the sheathed blade to be slipped out of the period clothing like sash or obi for instance while kodachi is worn slung from a cord in the same manner as a tachi.
A tachi is the same as a kodachi but is 2 to 3 shaku long.
An Odachi is 3+ shaku though only on rare occasion did they reach 5 shaku.
O & wo is a particle that act as an object marker so an object of important or presence/concern though it can be used for any object as long as something makes it notable with this case being the size.
What most in the west universally call a Katana is from the later potion Senguku jidae in the 15th century but mainly used post sengoku is the Uchigatana which came from a specific sort of tantou called a sasuga.
Uchi=company & home as Japanese business always tried to imply both are the same due to their work mentality.
Gatana=dull-edged sword'; Gatana from katana rendaku upon with comedic connotation (jidaigeki= a specific Theatric genre) for a dimwit as a self-appointed samurai.
Uchigatana basically implies the home society/organization of dimwits playing as samurai/retainers.
Uchigatana are 2 to 3 shaku in length as well.
The sword everyone uses to play as a samurai was seen as a sword of peace & those who were Samurai looked upon such people that wielded them as ridiculous for in the Edou jidae from 1600 to the mid 1800's you had no war but men roaming around with swords for as the highest caste of the caste system people let them do as they pleased but their elders would mock them as none of them saw war.
After the failed Japanese invasions of Korea from 1592 to 1598, Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 & the invasion of Ryuku in 1609 you can no real conflict till beside the Brief barely mention Shimabara Rebellion in 1637-1638 which shy of 60,000 died.
From 1638 to 1863 you had peace & people playing as retainer/samurai in japan for that was ended by the British Bombardment of Kagoshima Which Britain won as they resulted to bombardment after the satsuma domain attacked British representatives seeking legal justice through compensation that was received after with collateral damage for £25,000.
You don't try to avoid paying the British crown what you owed as it never ends well the indebted!
The Japanese found self-appointed samurai annoying in their own land let alone foreigners that do so!
It is rather ironic that the youth these days that are Japophiles act in a manner the Japanese can't stand.

If I recall correctly, the odachi and notachi were used mainly to strike at a calvary's horse (not the person on the horse)*. The tachi (Kotō through the Muramachi period), and later katana (Heian to Edo period), were used on foot when the samurai couldn't use their bows.
Really, the main weapon (before gunpowder) was the bow and arrow. Perhaps a better test would be the yumi vs the long bow.

the long bow is not great, but its cheap and easy to make. so a more realistic matchup is say, a yumi bowman vs 3 longbowmen.
Actually, I think a Samurai's main weapon (Much like with Knights) was mostly determined by the samurai themselves. Some excelled/preferred the Yumi (Bow), others the Yari (Spear) and even some would use the Kanabo (Yes, that giant bat was a weapon of war. lol)
As for the Odachi and Notachi well, they weren't given the nickname "Horse Killers" for nothing.
I saw a special about the comparison of longbow vs. Yumi and they looked about comparable but the draw is different as well as where you put the arrow.
The tachi was the mounting for cavalry sword use. The uchigatana was the mounting preferred for infantry sword use.
Who wins? Whoever is the better swordsman.

Sure the iron sand used by the Japanese were often heavy with impurities(something true to a somewhat lesser extent in Europe as well until the invention of the blast furnace), but after a lengthy period of time the steel was rid of a great deal of the impurities and you’d have a sword made of steel with similarities in content to swords in medieval Europe and other places.

the handle for Ōdachi was too short. Traditionally the handle length for it is 4-6 hands long with some being 8 hands long. This balances the blade so much better. For comparison Claymore is 2-3 hands long.

@@Giosuke_GiogashikataHands is the specific measurement used traditionally in Japan (called Shaku) derived, as with many things in Japan, from the Chinese measurement (Chi 尺). They still express sword length in Shaku in Japan.
The handle of the nodachi has to be longer (historically it was much longer) to be more manageable, even the handle of the katana shown in the video was longer
Naturally, yes... A blade of any sword can only be so long before you have to increase the length of the handle/pummel half hand. Otherwise, it will become unwieldy.
The benefit of the claymore, unlike the Odiachi, weight wise... Is the cross guard, if we're being traditional about it. The cross guard + pummel can counter balance the blade's weight much better the Odachi. Giving the Claymore better momentum for heavy swings if needed.
The Odachi is sharp but comparatively. It doesn't hit as hard.

Center of Gravity... You would know this by just holding the Odachi and the Claymore.
The Odachi is sharp but it doesn't have the momentum strength compared to the Claymore against Full Plate Armor. And depending on the Claymore Model designs, it can hit harder than an Odachi.
You cannot alter an Odachi too much, beyond its cross guard, handle, and Pummel/lack there of. But you can alter every aspect of the Claymore. Even if both swords were made from spring steel.
Case in point... Both the Odachi and the Claymore can weigh 4 lb. But the curvature of the Odachi and the center mass being near the cross guard with a proper long handed handle, makes the Odachi hit less harder than a Claymore. While a Claymore is often times, more top heavy above or on the False Handle. Giving it more bite/blunt damage Vs Armor if it does connect.
The center of gravity for a melee weapon and the total momentum efficiency is key to how hard a weapon will hit, regardless if it has a blade or lack there of.
Sharpness is only useful if you can cut through the material of Full Plate Armor. Which is, extremely rare for these types of swords. Excluding horses.
@absolstoryoffiction6615 no. Absolutely everything you've said. No. You sound like the only ones you've ever held were bad reproductions or fantasy pieces. You don't, if you can avoid it, want to hit armor with either of these. Neither are actually anti-armor weapons. Neither would be all that more useful against armor than a similarly sized and weighted stick. Why can you alter one and not the other? It's literally not the case. It's a massive debate as to whether they were used against horses at all. Nothing you've said is based in fact. It seems to be anime tropes and fantasies.
@@absolstoryoffiction6615 The claymore does not hit harder than the odachi, what the claymore's pommel generates is that its center of mass is lower, making it more maneuverable. However, I would say that the weight of the odachi that is further forward on the blade contributes to the momentum of the sweep.
There is another sword called nodachi that has a huge handle that takes up half the length of the sword, which is much more maneuverable, like the claymore.
You guys _might_ want to consider finding a good reproduction of a nagamaki. Particularly one of the larger examples, which _could_ be nearly six-feet long. If you know what you're doing, a nagamaki is _easily_ more useful than a nodachi, with the caveat that the blade itself is shorter to make up for the significantly longer handle; it's basically a pole-sword with a full-length tang. But the _leverage_ that gives you is phenomenal!

Personally I'm going with the claymore. I really love the look and utilitarian design of Medieval double-edged swords. Something just looks so beautifully efficient about the long tapering double edged blade, straight hilt, and cross guard. It just looks good and functions amazingly.
I could be wrong, but I think most nodachis normally has way longer handles. I don't really know exactly how this would change the results, but it would allow for more accuracy and power I think as you could spread your hands farther apart
It changes the result by adding more weight to the handle shifting the centre of control. It is very significant.
You're not wrong. Without the extra handle length it seems more an O'Katana to me. An O'dachi is roughly two thirds blade to one third handle. Metatron has one that's 1.76m or so. In saying that, the guide for O'dachi is 3 shaku 3 sun (90cm or 3 feet) is the shortest length (blade only) to qualify as one. Tyranth is correct on the weight being strange though because of the curve.

You're 100% correct, and to get a feel for what this would be like to handle just grab a sword-ish length stick. Swing it where it feel comfortable to swing. Now, put your hand lower on the stick (Towards the pommel/not whacky end). Now try swinging it a few times. It's slower and harder to control. You may feel like you get more power, but with swords raw physical power isn't important compared to things like edge alignment (Or structure). A heavy swing without edge alignment is significantly less dangerous than a light swing with good edge alignment. Since control gives better edge alignment, the extra length on the handle would give it more accuracy and thereby "power"
So basically, what they have is a slow clunky piece of sh-... I mean, I would really like to see these guys get a legit Odachi and actually experience and enjoy what that sword archetype should be.
Leverage. A longer handle gives you more leverage.

I've noticed when it's just Tyranth and Nate there's a lot of back and forth in the explanations and things, but when Shad is on it's more him talking with small details and short comments from whoever else is in the video with him. Now, I'm a long time viewer so I was here when it was just Shad, so I'm very use to Shad being in main focus. However, I feel it's a little unfair to see the other guys to be sidelined like that. I will continue to support the channel but would love to see Shad share the spotlight more. Love the content, love the personalities, love the swords.

The nodachi seems to be the perfect canadate for a re-hilting project. If it were to get a pommel attached to it that say weighed 200-300 grams (I recall from the review that the nodachi was 1.6Kg so this would take it up to 1.8-1.9Kg) this could possibly bring the nodachi more in line to the tachi in how the weight feels in your hand.

I prefer the Claymore's moveset in the first Dark Souls, although you get some fun Katana skills in DS3.
But if I had to choose I'd get the Great Scythe in DS1 and Friede's Great Scythe in DS3 (bonus points because Friede is best waifu.)
best claymore in any game TBH, its a shame since the zwei is even easier to get but oh well.

@eatonknass247 I concur, bricks make for excellent weapons and are immensely practical ones at that. They're easy to use in one hand, can be thrown, and are often readily available in urban environments should you ever find yourself caught in a skirmish. Great cost-effective little bludgeon in my humble opinion. You know what they say, "A quick brick to the dick is sure to do the trick!".

I really think reviews like this could benefit from studying with an expert in the use of the odachi, claymore texts are available, studied and it does scale up, as they say, but the odachi clearly requires a different touch.
As I’ve pointed out in my previous criticism, it’s clear the actual experience with both the katana and particularly the odachi is very limited. Sure, they admit to that, but then they’re coming to false conclusions for the sake of views, which isn’t, afaik, what this video is about.

As far as I know, the technique to cut with the Oodachi is by using the whole body, like, torso and arms, you should try that, maybe it changes the result. Nice video btw! Regards

What a great vid to have dinner to. Part of the o/nodachi's problem is its design was for taking out/dismounting cavalry so blade wiggle really not an issue as the target is a horse. That said beeeg sword fun to swing and such absurd weapons.
I can literally hear the breathing change when you guys hold and swing the Odachi. The weight balance of that thing must be no joke.
The weird balance of the Odachi reminds me of a sword from Nier Automata called Virtuous Treaty. The sword was designed in a way that moved the base of the blade to the front of the hand. I thought it was just done to be unique when I saw it the first time, but it would move the center of balance to an area directly over the hand instead of that awkward place behind it. I would like to see them test a replica.

And Odachi or Nodachi, as they are the same, would be (>90cm). The minimum blade length to classify one is 90cm, or 3 shaku.

Even though I am posting this question with a sword related video. My question is pertaining to the European short recurve bow. From your research what form of grip was used by the European's. Med, Asian, Mongol, Slavic etc.?
Since I mostly do Gao Ying, or Mongol I tend to use the thumb ring.

Do feel that the straight profile of the claymore gives it more control on the edge aligning while doing horizontal cuts, while the nodachi seems to be less forgiving on those and making it's use a bit more restrictive in comparison.

The Cloudhammer Steelworks Odachi you have is made of Sup 12 Japanese spring steel. I have the exact same Odachi it definitely does pull out of alignment when you swing it.
Im really surprisesd every time thaat you guys havent tried the Nagamaki its like a nodachi blade, but the handle is almost as long as the blade, i think it would be a lot more leveragable, and as far as im aware it was used a lot in battle! Im always curious to see your thoughts on this :)

We need a re-test with a nodachi/odachi that has a proper handle. Which would fix the weight distribution problem with the one you guys used.

I think that it works as an anti cavalry weapon only in conjunction with the Yari. After the charge gets slowed down by the spear wall, you cut down the survivors (make sure that they need a new horse).

(so no need to carry smaller weapons and no need for "survival" items to be trasported) my guess would be anything that pierces a coconut from the most distant and protected position, with the least amount of effort/fatigue. what is it in your opinion? I think you should make a horse analog. I think the cavalry thing has to be tested as in, one of you sits on the thing and you test the ability to hit the guy from the ground.
I could see the nodachi being relatively effective when used from horseback against infantry. But it would need to still be used2 handed so the leg strength required would be immense.
You would have chafing for weeks lol

I like single edged the most. If you have a good sword, you can bash or use slightly less lethal attacks if you like.
Plus if you get shoved or pushed into you can't get cut by your own sword. And you can choke it up a bit better because the back is blunt.
I now un-ironically want a "How to Cut with Swords" tutorial video, in which Tyranth and Shad teach Nate... and by extension, us... how to properly wield a sword with the intent to cut something.
I would love to see y’all partner up with ballistic dummy labs to give us a chance to see swords versus a human analog.

Samurai trained for years in the use of their various bladed weapons so were thoroughly versed in their individual idiosyncrasies. Having said that, there's probably a very good reason N/Odachi were mainly used for ceremonial purposes after the Kamakura period.
