as a fan of sabbath and the dead, i love that he goes "hey when people ask me if i know any jerry garcia? i go, here is a song called hole in the sky by black sabbath."
Alembic, huh? I know they've made boutique bass guitars for at least 25yrs. Real high end esoteric stuff that sounded like what you would expect. I'm fairly sure this obviously snobbly good ax is expensive. That Guy really likes his job and he's quite good at it. He gave those guitars a thourough seeing to. May he rock 1000yrs.
You really need to go to the Alembic website. The "tone" knobs are actually low pass filters. What you are calling coil splitters are actually off / on / bright switches. All Alembic pickups (except those in series guitars) are stacked with a dummy coil, but non of them can be split. You may also want to mention that the second input is there to run an onboard effects loop using a Tip Ring Sleeve cable. The effects loop is turned off and on using the fourth switch. Otherwise fun video.
More info: Cocobolo is a rosewood cousin that has a warm tone. Both guitars are neck through The brass plates at the end of the headstock cover the place to adjust the truss rod
@skipplet there is a full description you know?? all the specs are listed... Phil has done over 300 videos sorry he didnt know every detail about this guitar!!
+Garrison Kozlowski Simple question. Try to play Hendrix, Gilmore and the like. Then try to play like Jerry Garcia. You will soon learn that Garcia is a true genius. I've been trying to learn what Garcia does for 32 years.
Looks like my kind of guitars. Who the hell needs a humbuck at the neck? Split coils on the other two pickups give it plenty of versatility. A guitar you can play heavy metal on, flick a switch, and play La Bamba. Great tone no matter where he set it, too.
That second output is a stereo jack that is and effects loop send and return and the battery is for a preamp witch is wat that foremost switch is and the kill switch is the engage for the effects loop
@philx1111 Yeah mon! Dig your sense of humor. (Some of us don't need a whammy bar, either.) But sending the pickup output to certain pedals before the guitar volume control is pretty brilliant if you want to set your volume-dependent effects to the sweet spot, like an auto-wah. It's like having a volume pedal right there on the guitar. You plug the ones you want to be dependent on your volume knob after the guitar's main output, if you want to clean up overdrive with your volume. Keep rocking.
Guitars are meant to be played. Not wall decoration. Make a video playing a guitar even half as good as Phil before you can criticize . You are probably the kind of person who would buy a Ferrari and be too scared to drive it.
Thanks for the laughs! Be like watching me figure out how to shoot the sparks out of Ace Frehley's guitar pickups. The "kill switch" actually engages the onboard effects loop: put a TRS Y cord in the 2nd jack, connect pedals and switch 'em in and out from the guitar. Effects get full signal from pickups at all times regardless of master volume -- good for envelope filters, octaves, overdrives, etc. Constant tone at any volume. Tone controls are actually filters; off-on-bright are the toggles.
@johnnytastetest that's just how we do it... our fan base is as young as 6 years old, so we decided that without cutting the parts all together we could come up with a fun way to leave it in.. now I better go, I have to work on my bark mix levels...
@Rayvann4ever Just three vidz ago, they show us a 1961 ES 335. the Video is named "Welcome Home!! PHIL X FRIDAY RETURNS! 1961 ES 335 01162" They frequently put a vintage guitar up there, just because this is a active-pick-up guitar you still get one of the two you mentioned, Phil rockin' out. peace.
There’s no reason why this guitar couldn’t be used to play any style of electric guitar music. Just because it’s modeled after Jerry Garcia’s guitar doesn’t mean shit. It’s a well made solid body with humbucker pickups. There is literally zero reason why you couldn’t use it to play metal or hard rock. Alembic are high-end handmade guitars. It would actually be more of a waste to just play Dead covers on it
Joshua Holmes You get a pick of a lot of tonewoods so you can shape your tone as well as get some truly beautiful wood. And if you want high output pickups for playing thrash metal, they’ll do that. Jason Newstead has Alembic basses.
Hi guys, can you do a little video with that Gretsch Billy-Bo that's hanging on the far right? I'm curious to see what Phil can do with that one. Cheers
@MrMeddled Ain't talking about neck - whether it's bolt on or neck-through or set neck. I wrote just about my opinion about the sound of this guitar for the purposes I heard on that video, letting along its (or SG's) appearance, useless (in this case) electronic swithing, may be coil splitting, active/passive electronics and so on. Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable with my hate to Alembics :-)
I used to watch these phil X videos all the time and never forgot how good these alembics sounded for metal. I'm thinking its mostly those active pickups on such heavy tone woods plugged into the evil robot that makes it sound so good.
@dubtat 66 porsche and 61 vw.... not much difference. I wouldn't own either. Did you really mention a volkswagon to compare to my Ferrari comment? LOL The 2 of them together wouldn't get you a wrecked Ferrari missing the motor.
@dubtat My video's show what I own dumb ass. 400 HP 91 300zx TWIN TURBO, 500HP 73 mustang, Also notice the 85 Monte Carlo and big red jeep in the background. Only one missing is my Cobra. This guy has a Porsche that is same as a VW Karmann Ghia, and a regular VW, and he thinks he has something? LMFAO!!! If you don't have it in a video, you don't own it. MIC DROP PWNT
@dubtat dubtat 17 subscribers This channel doesn't have any content 17 subs and zero content. WHat are your subs watching? You are nothing more then a fake ass troll account. ZERO CONTENT> You own NOTHING. I have video proof you fucking moron.
@dubtat 1966 Porsche 911 S 0-60 mph 8.0 | Quarter mile 15.5 And if you don't have the 911S then your car is even slower. That is the same 0-60 and 1/4 mile time as a Honda Civic. Did you think your little glorified VW was something fast? desirable? Porsches in the 60's were slow as shit and just glorified VW's. He says he drives the shit out of them? Like the kids drive the shit out of there little slow ass Honda's? You would be way too scared behind the wheel of a 500HP V8. Just stick with your little slow ass cars. It's much safer for you that way. OH yeah, your just a troll with no content. Some kid in mom's basement with NOTHING to show in a video.
@Rayvann4ever really ? cause I'm pretty sure we consistently show a wide variety of rare vintage and specialty guitars... oh yeah I forgot they're free entertainment for you... sorry you feel we have lost site but in my humble opinion our vision has always been consistent. we will continue to showcase special guitars and hope that you can enjoy the videos for what they are... fun FREE entertainment..
@frettedamericana - I didn't mean any offense, frettedamericana. You just keep on crankin' out the awesome and I'll just keep watching. I don't mind the barking that much. : )
this guy with black nail polish on has no clue what hes got in his hands. Alembic was was at the cutting edge in the seventies and guitar makers are just now catching on to what they pioneered.
@braddyboy82 The guitar was on the wall probably before they started the show. I wanted to see the guitar. No we commented on the other videos for it. That phil don't know about it is not so hard to understand. It's a rare guitar. And that he haven't looked at it before, is probably that the design isn't eye catching unless you know about it. No fretted americana hasn't sold out. That the guitar is complex does only have the effect of not having to use pedals to get the sound you want.
SEEEEEEEEEEEEX !!!!!! now that i got your attention i wanted to tell you that YOU ARE FREAKING AMAZING i really hope you can come to Greece for one time:D i hope you reply:D
the T shirt is about MAIDEN =D ( freedom like the clansman ... same write type... and then RIDE TO THE HILLS wich is TUN to the hills ;) ) funny =D this is the most polyvalent guitar i've ever seen ! just a wonderful piece !
@CompulsiveOrigami Well, they're not exactly wildly popular, but most guitarists who've heard of Jerry Garcia have heard of Alembic. Jack Casady and Stanley Clark are two famous bassist who use them too. They're like the "pre- PRS" PRS as far as sort of setting a new standard, ya know.?. Anyway, the second model looked cooler to me, but if you're really looking into jam band masters' gear, check out Trey Anastasio's Languedoc guitars! Those things just SING, at least in Trey's hands they do:)
I always go and watch old FA videos when I’m feeling down. Thanks for all you’ve done, Phil.
I want that guitar so bad.
The switches are firstly on & off for the stereo effects loop, the other three are pickups on, off and bright, not split.
The greatest line "When people ask me if I know any Jerry Garcia I say "here's a Black Sabbath song called Hole in The Sky""! 😂
Don't let this dude touch an Alembic ever again
What a beautiful, awesome sounding guitar! I love that body shape, it looks so unique and classy at the same time.
@StevieBGoode it's called We Bring The Rock N Roll. it will be out end of July.
as a fan of sabbath and the dead, i love that he goes "hey when people ask me if i know any jerry garcia? i go, here is a song called hole in the sky by black sabbath."
Man you always cheer me up when I'm blue Phil , you da man !!
I was shocked to hear those strat tones coming out of that guitar...
10 years and no dislikes 👏
I love to listen and watch Phil X Playing the Guitar!!! This guy is super cool and is always happy!!! Blessings
You like watching psychotic morons???
Thanx a heap fro videoing those Alembics. They are as rare as hens teeth in Australia, so I've never them!

Our Aniki!!! Awesome!!!
Phil thanks, we know it your work) but your work- is our pleasure
@skipplet there is a full description you know?? all the specs are listed... Phil has done over 300 videos sorry he didnt know every detail about this guitar!!
You just spat on 2 of the greatest instruments ever created & the greatest guitarist ever
Garcia? Hardly.
ok who then?
+Garrison Kozlowski Jimi Hendrix?
if you can't tell i meant jerry, you need some help
+Garrison Kozlowski
Simple question. Try to play Hendrix, Gilmore and the like. Then try to play like Jerry Garcia. You will soon learn that Garcia is a true genius. I've been trying to learn what Garcia does for 32 years.
The Alembic guitars are my favorite sounding guitars in the shop, apart from the Bass VI
One of the most entertaining dudes on youtube.
Looks like my kind of guitars. Who the hell needs a humbuck at the neck? Split coils on the other two pickups give it plenty of versatility. A guitar you can play heavy metal on, flick a switch, and play La Bamba. Great tone no matter where he set it, too.

omg favorite guitar ever on fretted just because it's a jerry garcia tiger replica
Thanks for Sabbath!
MAN I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEW DRILLS ALBUM
cocobolo is the one worlds hardest and most dense tropical hardwoods.
WE NEED MORE GIBSONS!!!
@frettedamericana I just found your channel and I think I just watched all 300 videos today. You dudes rule.
8:38 Dave Mustaine calls those "spider chords".
That's why Megadeth is badass.
@philx1111 Yeah mon! Dig your sense of humor. (Some of us don't need a whammy bar, either.) what an awesomely great mis-handlng of this guitar~~~i'm sorry to have seen this
Guitars are meant to be played. Not wall decoration.
Make a video playing a guitar even half as good as Phil before you can criticize .
You are probably the kind of person who would buy a Ferrari and be too scared to drive it.
Apparently, according to the dead heads, you can only play Grateful dead songs on an Alembic.
CANNOT wait for the new Drills album!!!!!!!!!!
you rock Phil and frettedamericana!
WOO! new drills!
Thanks for the laughs! Be like watching me figure out how to shoot the sparks out of Ace Frehley's guitar pickups. Awesome tones. They make nunchuks out of cocobolo.
@johnnytastetest that's just how we do it... our fan base is as young as 6 years old, so we decided that without cutting the parts all together we could come up with a fun way to leave it in.. now I better go, I have to work on my bark mix levels...
What’s with the girl 👧 nail polish 💅???????
some of his ozzy vocals are bang on. love it!
@frettedamericana Another version came out just a few weeks ago!
I wouldn't usually go for a guitar like that, but I love J Garcia and the tone from that guitar is very nice.
Homeboy is such a guitar player…
@JackbruceGarymoore It's actually "Cold Shot"
@Rayvann4ever Just three vidz ago, they show us a 1961 ES 335. the Video is named "Welcome Home!! PHIL X FRIDAY RETURNS! 1961 ES 335 01162"
They frequently put a vintage guitar up there, just because this is a active-pick-up guitar you still get one of the two you mentioned, Phil rockin' out. peace.
Swap the pups out with Dimarzio Super 2's (bridge and middle) and an SD-1 in the neck and you got Jerry's tone.
@Zas379 because it is a very rare prototype.
Phil next time you come to Italy please announce yourself! And please demo that crazy red Gretsch!
There’s no reason why this guitar couldn’t be used to play any style of electric guitar music. Just because it’s modeled after Jerry Garcia’s guitar doesn’t mean shit. It would actually be more of a waste to just play Dead covers on it
I dont think it would do so good with loads of gain at all. I think clean and fingerpicking specialists would fall head over heels for it though
They are bonkers expensive. Like $12,000 ! But you do get fret markers that shoot lasers, if you want.
Cheers
If Phil X and Jack Black walked in to the same room, the universe would explode
@glenstheman78 he explained that he holds the guitar at an angle so it doesnt scratch the guitar, or something like that.
Great plywood guitar! Kidding, it's insanely beautiful but it is kind of a multi-piece thing.
+81giorikas
Yes many layers of exotic wood. Gives the guitar strength and of course beauty.
@MrMeddled Ain't talking about neck - whether it's bolt on or neck-through or set neck. This guitar... I want it.
long live jerry the great
@MongoTheLloyd No, there are two outputs. One is stereo while the other is mono. Rickenbacker is also known doing this.
Could we get a tour of the rest of the shop in a video?
Dude cover up that belt buckle when you play an ALEMBIC! geez
@dubtat You are probably the kind of person who would buy a Ferrari and be too scared to drive it.

Awesome, I was there for the filming of this one too. The Tiger sounded sweet and was a gorgeous instrument.
This makes me want to move to California.
the intro solo sounds tasty!
I would love PHIL X in KISS!!!!!
Thumbs up if you think so!!!!!!!!
@guimolnar i love that song. and yes... i've done it.
Phil X, you are a fkn LEGEND =D
Lets go on an Adventure!

Wow, the headstock on that second Alembic is almost bigger than the body.
Cool stuff!

@baitsworld79 he did it a while ago. It's called pelham blue
looks like a 9 year old designed them. sounds like a genius designed them.
Nice to see some Sabbath.
@headwhop26 yes I am... for about the last 8 months or so...
@holyswordsmanoffaith are you using regular plastic picks or tortex type picks? try different material picks before you switch guages.
Not a kill switch. The second jack is the onboard stereo effects loop, and the so called "kill switch" turns the effects loop on and off.
Heard some Flippin Out - loving it
I was about to request "Flippin' Out", but then: 3:32
Ei helvetti miten kaunis ääni!
That was amazing.
@ben10062 uhh the shops in the valley... owner from London, Artist from Canada and director San Diego. :)

That intro-thing was awesome! What the hell was that!?
Hey nice vid' Dude, but, I have a question, what is the song that you're playing at 06:55 ? Thanks a lot dude ! Keep groovin' like this, it's amazing !
@especialRUS sounds like its just the mics thats not being used for some reason.

@Simo573c : It's Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand The Weather
kickass as usual. Phil, do you ever come to Texas?
dude that things sounds great with everything you played !!! what p/u's ?? and thanks or doing KISS !!!!!
@TheKillerFabivs you guys are kidding, right? you don't know the difference between Cold Shot, Pride and Joy and Couldn't Stand The Weather?
