- Writer, actor and comedian visited the BFI Southbank to talk about her career as part of our Comedy Genius season.
As part of the 1980s alternative comedy scene, Jennifer Saunders and her partner Dawn French helped redefine the nature of comedy for generations. From The Comic Strip, French and Saunders and Girls on Top to Happy Families, Jam and Jerusalem and Absolutely Fabulous, Saunders has been at the core of British comedy as both a performer and writer. She joins us tonight as we celebrate her career.

someone already said this but its exactly how I feel too...so I'll repeat it: i love Jennifer Saunders with all of my heart
She is the master of reacting without words
She's absolutely brilliant and a modest genius. AbFab was as monumental as Monty Python and Faulty Towers....i especially loved the Comic Strip series of films.👍🇬🇧
Are you American?
@@DeanMoxley87 ...No🇬🇧🇬🇧
I agree: Saunders is genius. And I’m an American. (Not sure why that was asked of the prior poster.) Brilliance can be recognized all over!
Thank you for uploading! Jennifer Saunders is a comedy genius.
I love Jennifer Saunders...with all my heart.
Superb talent...both her and Dawn and the late great Victoria Wood made Brits the leaders in comedy writing. Geniuses all three.
The very fact she has consistently worked with the same people for literally decades speaks volumes about her.
Close your eyes and imagine the Fairy Godmother having an interview
StrawberryFlutterpie Exactly!. 😁
Fuck off with your Fairy Godmother, she's Edina Monsoon 🥰
Absolutly gutted I couldn't make this. She is phenomenal. And inspirational x
Jodie Watson I agree with you I loved Ab Fab when I found it in the 90s had no knowledge of Jennifer I recently had a stroke my left side is paralyzed lots of down time and glad for the Ab Fab episodes everybody loves Patsy of course I do but I love Eddy especially her slap stick Jennifer’s writing made the show she knew how to write for Patsy of course Joanna delivers the lines perfectly poor is one of my fav episodes the car scene where Edina and Patsy are yelling at the woman who beeps at Eddy makes me laugh every time I watch it. Exploitin is a good one Jen opens with hysterical falls. Fear in season 3 was some good acting but very sad.it was supposed to prepare for the series ending.I just adore Jen and admire her talent and dedication her book is pretty good.
@@survivor648 Get better soon. 🐕🐶🐇🐢🐦🐐🐧🐼🐒🐘🐠🐞😴
she is to whom Heiddegger wrote Being and Time
...and unfortunately agrees with fox hunting, even hunts herself.... :/
What a great life she has had lots of fun with good friends love and admire her for her talent and dedication
This is a great interview - thanks
I remember walking in on Jennifer ,the Boys and Dawn at the Raymond review bar ( where I was working to get my equity card ) the only way you could get it in those days was to work in a theatre ..the only theatre that would accept you without an equity card was Paul Raymond's review bar ! I did the year got my equity card and managed to do backing vocals a film and much more ..sad it had to be that way in those days ..I remember the look on every ones face when opened the door by mistake ha ha comic indeed ...Love them all !
@ 36:45 Jennifer is correct that American TV has quite a rich history of female sketch and sitcom performers. And many female led shows. Starting of course with Lucille Ball in the 1950's, female led sitcoms of the 1960's and 70's like "That Girl" with Marlo Thomas, “The Mary Tyler Moore” show, “Maude” with Bea Arthur, “Rhoda” with Valerie Harper,. Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams in "Laverne & Shirley". Carol Burnett's sketch comedy/variety show. All the Saturday Night Live ladies in all the decades. Roseanne Barr, in the 1980's and 90's and so on. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler etc.. And I am sure many more I am forgetting. Quite extraordinary TV history we have in American television.
You forgot possibly the most famous female led US comedy of the all… The Golden Girls. But your point is nonetheless valid.
A hugely talented and witty woman! I love Jennifer Saunders :)
Fairy Godmother!! I love her even though I can't understand what she's saying in this video because of my lack of English!!
She is a treasure ...
Jennifer Saunders is absolutely fabulous!
She’s a treasure ❤️
She is very hilarious!💖
I think her husband's much funnier!
The Cruise thing was in one of their sketches :)
Geography Field Trip
Oh god that awards story 😆😂👏
I love you Saunders!
In all of the interviews I have watched let them eat cake is never mentioned I like the series no Ab Fab for certain it was very French and Saunders. Comedy strip has some great F and S stuff my fave is Oxford Jen is great in that one she has a Louisiana accent and she is sexy as hell worth watching if you’re a fan.
debbie nichols, I loved Let Them Eat Cake and wish it would get mentioned. Underrated show and damn funny.
“Let them eat cake” is fabulous! Also “murder most horrid” with Dawn French is truly hilarious. Many are available on UA-cam.
Oh, and “Class Act” with Joanna Lumley is great too 😀
@@eccremocarpusscaber5159 yes I love Let Them Eat Cake Jam And Jerusalem is pretty good Dawn has a good role in that.
More Jam and Jerusalem on Netflix or Amazon? Yes please!!!!
A fucking queen! Pure comedic genius
What was the old clip that was edited out at 12:08?
Probably this 😂 ua-cam.com/video/LVu0oiik6mE/v-deo.html
Brilliant
Having just watched all of F&S and Absolutely Fabulous, I have a gay man’s crush on Jen.
Have you chanced upon Let Them Eat Cake? Or Joanna Lumley's travels to Greece and Egypt?
Jerry Lewis is one of her least favorite? Another great reason to like her..
The cutting out is very annoying I only stuck it out because I love her so much

Excuse me if I ask a daft question (my excuse is I'm a pretty new to all this) but is there a version of this 'conversation' available for watching that INCLUDES short clips (that were cut out of this 'UA-cam version' here).
I'm afraid not. The BFI would have only had licence for the clips to be shown at the event. I'm sure if you did some searches you could find the clips online.
That said, I hope one day this will change.
I just adore and admire this woman she’s extremely dedicated and talented such a hard worker
Comic Genius.
not better than Dawn, though
were there any actual impersonations? seems like they were cut out
class
Mr Pastry available on utube
Absolutely Fabulous was on PBS station ,Saturday afternoons,in Houston,in the 1990s
Saturday afternoons?? How much was cut out lol what's the point in putting it on in the afternoon?
The interviewer is so bad me mumbles and rushes one word into another. And she is a perfect interviewee ( lucky for him ) and never misses a beat.
Agreed! And he keeps interrupting her while she’s answering him. He is quite knowledgeable and has genuine enthusiasm but yes, his technique is messy.
Dawn has a surreal mind.
Jennifer promised there would be another Ab Fab movie if enough people watched the first one.
sunny sim, Please don't tease me if that's not true. I'd love to see another movie. I miss those girls!
#damegenius..Luv her❣️💕🌟
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
To sum up all of the comedy acts of young ones, ab fab, bottom if they were a band i'd call them Knives and forks and the fans are the kitchen sink.
Why dont we get to see the clips???
Copyright. UA-cam channel didn't want to pay for it.
@@sw9618 the BFI probably couldn't afford the costs to have them on UA-cam
Copyright. The BFI either didn't have the rights to show them in this clip on UA-cam, or didn't want to pay the royalties.
@@zeddeka Agreed.
Interviewer! Please don't say 'and so forth' and 'and stuff' after every question.
Poor fellow I mean kind of speaks no sort of in terms of English at all.
@@sartoresartus Well, I can't understand what you wrote here.
YOU HAVE TO KEEP JOANNA LUMLEY ALIVE JESUS FUCK I HADNT EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THAT
Disappointing that the interviewer is very difficult to understand.
Phone cord skirt?
Fawn cord (corduroy) skirt
Jennifer - great as usual; humble. The dribbling interviewer? Not so great. Why do the gays (and I am one) love Patsy and Edina? Because a heroic failure is better than a mediocre success.
I love your comment / insight: "heroic failure is better than a mediocre success". Can I quote you in my 'will be published someday' book?
Are you related to Sid Vicious Jennifer?
All I hear is the Fairy Godmother
love jennifer saunders but i couldn’t concentrate on the interview…i was waiting for his chair to collapse
What a shitty thing to say.
Jennifer bis looking good here, but Dawn looks a bit rough.
a genius??? are u serious??
You seem to have missed the pre-fix, "Comedy" which adds some perspective. Hope that clears things up and that you enjoy the rest of your day.
Matgo Styles I just Luv her.Comedy Genius..did I stutter?❣️
'Genius' is a pompous descriptive, typical for something like BFI, I suppose. Let's just say that Saunders is naturally funny, and leave it there.
I know..... that word is meaningless now as it is attached to any boring mediocrity who has been around for a while..... like this talentless drac.
'Comedy genius'?!!!
Oh come on..... how is that word slung around so very easily these days? Jennifer Saunders a genius?!! I'd like to know on what basis some think she is a genius. Her portrayal of Jennifer in 'Girls On Top'?, Her sketch show mediocrity? Surely not 'Absolutely Fabulous'?? Promising first series but then ran out of steam and she hasn't done anything since. Genius?!!!!!
Please, what did I miss that warrants that description of her?
Comedy Genius??? Painfully unfunny more like.
Seems your the only one with that opinion. Seems odd that you would watch this video with that opinion. Why not just move along? Why be negative?
I'm curious why you'd watch this video if you thought that.
@@lorimckellar2801 No, he's not. She is cringe inducingly unfunny. How the hell can anyone call her a genius? For what?
@@rnw2739 Well a lot of the things she's been in over the years have been quite popular.
