How to play 32-Bit / Unsupported Steam Games on Mac OS Catalina | Easiest Method

- I've seen a bunch of really convoluted tutorials on how to run unsupported / 32-bit Steam games on MacOS Catalina, and even lots of posts saying it's not possible and you should install Windows via Bootcamp.
So I made this quick video to show how easy it is to get these older games running on MacOS Catalina. There's really nothing to it.

apple dropping 32-bit support was a bad call imo
This is the fault of Valve, IMO. Apple had been saying they were going to drop support for about two years, and valve simply does not care about porting their older games to the Source 2 engine.
@@Rustbelt_Research yeah it is kinda stupid. I just want to play portal and portal 2 but they are both 32 bit. They should just update their darn games.
@@petersummerhays7569 Valve is a scummy, predatory company IMO. They only care about the fact that you previously bought the game, not that you can no longer play it. I'm very happy to see game developers moving away from Valve/Steam to other game purchasing/launching platforms.

I bought Bejeweled 3 on my Mac while at college because it reminds me of playing it with my dad at home. I had the problem that it's a 32 bit game and this tutorial was exactly what I needed! It runs perfectly now and it's a nice thing to have in my spare time! Thank you!

@@huellbabineaux576 if you still haven't fixed it, I had the same issue. All you have to do is close it and re-open it again then it works.
Honestly, this helped me so much. I haven't been able to play my favorite game for almost two years because it's 32-bit, and I was having a pretty bad day. This worked really well and I was finally able to play my game again, and it comforted me so much. I actually cried when I started playing the game again, that probably sounds silly but it's my comfort game and obviously it sucked to not having it throughout 2020 and into 2021 since these past two years have been anything but comforting. Thank you so much, I'm really grateful you found an easy way to do this that actually works.
How much space does it take to download this?

@@Jason-lu5wr if u are referring to PlayOnMac, it's about 600 mb for catalina or upper vs, while about 200 mb for versions under 10.5

actually, lemme just copy+paste the comment i found on Reddit, so for anyone struggling with 6:02:
On the PlayOnMac interface, go on ‘Configure'
Under the ‘General’ tab, add the in the text field next to ‘Arguments’ the following:
"wine steam.exe -no-browser +open steam://open/minigameslist -noreactlogin"
(it will appear as small mode, now i know it's gonna look a bit weird for new users, and i've tried making it big using "open/largegameslist" but that just makes the library blank so don't try that :')
Then open Steam

It doesn't show the login page for me it just shows a black window. When I put in the code it just says its disabled because of the code

Awesome, thanks. I sent this video to a friend so we could play Portal 2 together because he had the 32 bit problem. Funny thing is I'm on Linux and he's on Mac. He figured it out easily with your video and I had no idea when I sent it to him that It would be a Wine tutorial because I had to go do something and just told him "this video might help but I haven't seen it yet". Wine is exactly what I use to play non steam games on Linux. And Proton (based on Wine) is what Steam officially gives Linux users to install Windows games.

when the installation is done and when i opend steam from wine. it has a black screen that has nothing in it. idk if this is an encoding error or something but any solutions?

What OS did your Mac come with? My M2 came with Monterey and PlayOnMac is telling me I can't run 32 bit steam.
@@jackk.358 I'm on an M1 Max with Monterey and i can run steam, but games are laggy and audio is unusably choppy.
For anyone having problems with it just hanging after logging in, try adding the following commands to the ones in the description. (Without Quotes): "-udpforce -allosarches -cef-force-32bit". It seems that those commands are needed to work with the most recent WineCX engine. (Found on the WineskinServer Wiki).
Where exactly do I add these commands to? Not too savvy with configs lol

Im not sure if this will work but you could try doing the (removing website step) before loging in
3:48 My M1 Mac Studio doesn't tell me anything about my graphics in this window. Option+Clicking on About this Mac makes it "System Information" which has more but I still don't see anything under Graphics/Displays about graphics memory. Is that because the "unified memory" means the graphics memory is shared by all the rest of the computer memory?

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I was forcibly updated to the new OSx (which I hadn't been installing on purpose!) when I needed to get a new computer, and I was really upset by how much of my games I lost access to. It was hundreds of dollars worth, especially because I play a lot of older and indie games. Finding this is such a life saver!
I don't know if you're still looking at these comments, but if anyone sees this: any tips on uninstalling a game from your Window steam after you get it going? I made a mistake on something and deleted an executable, and it won't let me uninstall and reinstall because when I click to uninstall it takes me to the black-paged Steam version that we already worked around by opening in offline mode.
On steam, right click on said game then click properties. From the menu click local files then finally click verify the game files' integrity

so from 9:20 it cut from downloading the game I wanted to play to what steam looked like before the code but online- I'm super confused because when I tried opening the game on the coded window it just wouldn't open. I see that all the other comments look like the video helped but I'm just stuck and I feel like I'm right there but I don't have it just yet.

when i get to the wine32on64-preloader to sign into steam it just shows a black box that i am unable to move or interact with at all. anyway to fix this would be really appreciated.
I got to the point of installing Steam. However, instead of the log in window that you got, I simply get an entirely grey window, without a menu bar at the top or anything. Do you know how that may be able to be fixed? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling steam a couple times, as well as putting in the code in the description. The code has the same gray window but has a notice that the browser is disabled, and I still cannot do anything.

Hey, were you able to run DirectX games or uninstall games? Whenever I try to run directX games the game itself crashes, and the installer does not seem to work, and whenever I try to uninstall, it boots back up to the regular version of steam, just showing all black

For those getting the vulcandriver error, just keep closing and re opening Play on Mac while Steam is open in the background. A lot of trial and error but it worked for me.

I have a problem. Every time i open it up and around twenty seconds there is a box poping up that says fatal error blahblah. Though my steam box doent shut down, I just cannot log in because after i click sign in it seems as if it is loading but I think it just stay there doing nothing. How can I solve this?

I am not sure, audio worked fine for me with no tinkering.
You need to fix it through the Mac audio output settings
