A lot of motorcycles have the same system. Agree, if 70,000 people installed this, one would probably fail. It's still probably safer than your rechargeable leaf blower that stays plugged in year round.
I tend to agree that it's a risk to place electrical devices directly into gas tanks, however most modern cars and trucks have the electric fuel pump and the fuel level sensor inside the gas tank.
Electricity has been in every fuel tank with a gas gauge since it was invented. It was in there long before the modern evap systems when the tanks were actually vented to the atmosphere and were full of oxygen. The thermistor used in the video probably was a bad idea though.
@@fullmetaljacket7 True...but I'm sure Taryl just realized he might be setting himself up for a bunch of liability, and decided to play it safe...can't say that I would blame him...people are litigation happy these days and don't like to take responsibility for their own decisions or actions....
I agree with Teryl. When a thermistor fails it will usually open up basically disconnecting the circuit. But there are circumstances when a thermistor could fail causing a short circuit (heat, sparks..) Not something you want while it's immersed in flammable liquid.
also if the wiring inside a metal tank fell down and wore through, you might have a problem. i hope mr. dactal comes up with a knockoff from other proven designs.

It's unfortunate that you had to pull the video, but your concern for us grass rats shows through. Also, in this world of litigation, who needs the grief if something went awry with some idiot and they were injured. I did a lot of reading on NTC thermistors being used in fuel tanks. Many thousands of motor bikes had them and they didn't have plastic tanks. Never heard of any rider coming to grief. But as you say, it's a project that you do at your own risk, if you do it at all. Or just keep a length of wooden dowel handy in the side pocket of the ride on and check your levels with that. Keep 'em coming Taryl. We love your videos.
Was gonna say my Honda V65 Magna uses a thermistor for low fuel. It's common practice. Only problem they had were they disintegrated but soldering a new thermistor on is easy.
There are liquid level sensors that are external that are sold on fleabay and other sources for about 5 dollars each. They would work perfectly on plastic gas tanks. Not sure if they would work on metal tanks or not. It would take a little testing. I bought one and built a circuit for it for controlling a valve feeding my RO system that I use to fill 5 gallon water jugs for drinking water in my home. I was using an audible timer and getting busy elsewhere and the jugs would over flow. I bought the sensor and the parts to automatically turn off the supply valve when the water jug is full. The sensor slips over the neck of the water jug and senses when the jug is full and not only closes the valve but automatically kills the power to everything. I use a pushbutton switch to power everything up which opens the value, turns on the 5 volt power supply, turning on the sensor. I energize a relay that maintains power to everything. When the sensor sees water, it turns off the relay dropping out the latching relay that provides the power to everything. This way there's no chance that anything could go wrong.
