Dave... I know what the names of parts are in electronics and I know about resistance, ohms and volts, etc (thanks to my excellent science teachers in High School here in Australia). I know how to use a soldering iron but, for the life of me, I couldn't a hundredth of what you do in sussing out and repairing these old sets. Brilliant...just brilliant! I watch your videos because they are so relaxing, you have the most personable manner and voice and you are restoring pieces of Australian manufacturing history. This set was probably made the year I was born. It was made here in Melbourne either at EIA's Clayton plant or the South Melbourne plant (more likely). It breaks my heart to see the remnants of a once-great industry. Having toured the Clayton plant as a kid (I had a cousin who worked there) I was awe struck! It was big enough to fit three jumbo jets, I reckon, and it was a hive of activity because they had three whitegoods lines, a television line, a radio line and a record-making plant. The ladies who did the assembly and wiring work were incredible to watch...their dexterity was amazing. The other thing was (and not many people know this) that EIA also made wonderful electronics for the defence industry and had already made excellent prototype colour tv sets for the eventual switch over the colour. When Philips took control all that work in colour sets was chucked out in favour of the ubiquitous Philips K9A chassis but that's another story... P..S. Only a few years ago I had a similar level of expertise as you, it only takes some experience and watching endless hours of UA-cam videos to get to a reasonable level, there are also groups on the internet very willing to help strugglers like me. @@DavidTipton101 Yes, that's 100% correct. Gough Whitlam did many good things for Australia but one of the worst things he did was to sign Australia up to the Lima Accords which meant that in '73 he dumped all tariffs on consumer electronics. That effectively destroyed the industry in weeks. It didn't help that EIA was, by then, majority owned by Philips who were ruthless is shutting down the plant after Gough would not even consider one of the industry pleas for assistance. After that there was a domino effect in the consumer electronics industries here and they all fell...even the mighty AWA, which shrank down to building defence equipment and then morphed into a group owned by Mitsubishi Electric and is now a computer service company. The only electronics industry to survive the bloodbath (for a while, at least) was local assembly of colour tv sets which continued with various companies until the early 90s. The Lima Accords gave us globalisation. This gave us cheaper consumer goods but it decimated the Australian workforce and the poverty created by globalisation brought in the drug problems and petty crime problems. The rest is history. Gone are the halcyon days you and I knew when whoever wanted to work could get a job...most of the stuff we bought was made here and most of it was built to be serviceable. How times have changed and not for the better, sadly.
My family had the same model in our kitchen. Great radio that has stood the test of time, Ours also needed the caps replaced and also a couple of electrolytics over the years. Radio was on for around 8 hrs a day. Only one suggestion, if i may The mains wiring to the power on/off switch, if you were worried about the closeness to the power transformer, you could use a bit of heat shrink over the switch terminals and a bit of sheet plastic ( old ice cream lid cut down ) glued to the side of the transformer. Other than that another one "done and dusted". Love your work, keep it up.

It's so nice you finished off your collection of radios you had when you were young. I can remember my Mum's and Dad's portable radios and of course the ubiquitous "radiogram" that we had and although they're long gone I'd get really nostalgic if I saw them again.
It's interesting that you still have AM Oldies stations! When I was growing up in the late 60's - early 70's, We had more than a few "top 40" AM stations. The typical weekend was spent cruising the main drags with "top 40" hits blasting. Pretty accurately depicted in the movie "American Graffiti." It's nice being able to bring back a radio of that era and the memories that came with it. You are truly a perfectionist!
Hi George, it was the same here back in the AM days. We had two oldies stations until recently but one was bought out and changed to sports station. Or should I say an ad station interrupted by sport. The national station plays a bit of pop music from time to time as well. Thanks George 😊

Your restoration videos have become my favorite, now obviously the contrast of a horrible looking radio restored to its factory beauty is more satisfying, but a radio like this that makes for fond memories as its from your childhood sure makes sense. In a way, the better state its in before restoration, the better the end result, cant fix things that are too far gone.
i have watched just about all your videos now and what a difference from the earlier. they are much more creative and the delivery is perfective. I appreciation the time it takes to produce these videos. The content has the right balance of technical know how and humour, well done. I always look forward to each and every episode. lol, your humour cracks me up! I didn't like the look of it when I first saw it, but after you cleaned it up it came out nice. The new knobs made a huge difference to the look of the radio. The dial glass came out really well. "Tone knob is broken, but who uses a tone knob anyway?" lol Wicked! Edit:Typo!

@@DavidTipton101 Hahahaha! Aspirin they would get or "Tylenol." Bex or Vincents...forget it! Bex brings back memories of the naughty ditties we made up at school replacing the words in the Bex ad with some other choice Aussie language. Modesty prevents me from repeating them here! As an aside...it's a good thing they stopped selling Bex and Vincent powders because they used to be full of phenacetin which prompted kidney cancer. The rub of it is that the formulations both companies used were very effective painkillers on a par with Panadeine Forte (paracetamol and codeine, for US viewers).

Hello again David, i must say i really enjoyed this one because it got us to know you a little more. I of course don't have a clue as to how big a family you grew up in, but i know now you had at least one brother and have fond memories of the time spent with him. Your narration of it brought me back to a time where as a kid the radio in the kitchen was the most important part of our lives when i was young. Living in Canada we have to deal with many snow storms and blizzards during the winter months and although the winters have been less snowy for the past 20 years or so (no doubt due to climate change), in the 60's and 70's it was a common occurence to close down schools during bad snow storms in order to remove all the snow from the streets. The school closing were always announced very early on the radio first. So whenever it had been snowing all night we the four children would gather in the kitchen just to listen to the radio to see if our school had indeed been closed or not. I remember how we would burst in joy when they said our school was closed. Then we would all put on our snow suits and go play outside in the snow. Our favourite sport was to climb all the way up to the third story balcony and jump into the deep snow. Sometimes my little brothers would get buried so deep i had to use a shovel to dig them out. It would make my mom freak out and i could see her panic and scream through the kitchen window. But there was never any casualties aside from a little snow getting inside our suits. My personal record after what we refer to as the storm of the century in 1974 getting over 5 feet of snow in one day, was to jump all the way down from the roof of the building. To this day i still hold the bragging rights around the neighbourhood, for being the only guy to have done it and lived to tell the tale. Also watching you bring this one back to life i was thinking to myself: ''Man that looks so easy for him''. Thank's for sharing sir i really savoured it.

This Radio is the third you've restored that I've not long worked on. This one in particular I only just put in back in its cabinet yesterday. Mine has a white cabinet but had a big stain on top. Carl's has quite a few items that you can't get anywhere else. There used to be a couple more selling Caps and what not but have disappeared so Carl's is the best of who's left. I've been looking at a 3D printer to make cabinet parts .Be nice if you could make a whole cabinet but the printer would have to be huge and I'm not sure how the plastic would handle heat. So far I've been making the knobs on the lathe with a brass insert that way their not so delicate.
Hi anno250, Yes, Carl is building quite a stock of parts for the radio community so I like to support what he does. That would be great to be able to print a new cabinet, maybe one day 😉

That chassis is pretty clean for a 1958 vintage radio. Looking back I can't remember my childhood radios but I'm 70 yrs old lol. Well I would have never thought of a lens cleaning kit to clean that plastic dial plastic great idea. Great looking and sounding radio.
A nice easy one for a change! Bring back the memories of youth, good stuff! Some of the big box hardware stores here in the U.S. have started stocking 6 foot (3M) extension cords both in 2 and 3 prong with the cloth covering, very reasonable price. Just cut the end off that you don't want. I have repaired a lot of headlights, I find that moving only one direction, not in circles is the quickest way to get through the process. Each time you change grit you change the direction by 90 deg until you see that all of your marks are gone. I start depending on the plastic at about 600 grit wet and dry paper, use water as a lube. Finish with 6000 grit then polish. Circles will give you swirl marks and make it very hard to see if you have removed all of the prior grit marks. You are just working harder than you need to. I like your knobs... that might sound a bit odd out of context ! LOL!

Nice thing to start my Friday morning off with. I’m sure it evoked some fond memories getting this up and running again. I have a 1950’s Telecictor Cub. A rare thing from the West Midlands, U.K. with only a few thousand being made. It was my grans so fond memories whenever I look at it. So good to see more reproduction parts being made so these great looking old sets can get a new lease of life. Another nice job there and look forward to your next project as always.
Good job once again, thank you. It occurs to me, that all radios of the 50s-60s had bakelite cabinets rather than timber. I did my Radio apprenticeship in 1960 in Germany and at that time I recall only Phillips had a little bakelite radio. All other German makes had timber cabinets.
Thanks Peter. I think most Aussie mantle radios were Bakelite or plastic by the 50s and 60s. I looked through my collection and the only wooden ones were based on English models or are German 🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed that 44 minutes David. The radio is a great reminder of your brother and good times unfortunately long gone. I was Browsing on Ebay the other day for the hifi separates I bought in the 60's when I started work. It's all there, the amp turntable and speakers. I was tempted to buy them to remind me of my youth but retro hifi is pretty expensive now and I'm just too tight fisted to open my wallet. Ah well the memories are just as good anyway.

I like how the radios of that time period utilized some of the design aspects of that era's automobiles. (i.e., the front grill, etc.) . . . I also find myself being somewhat nostalgic lately. Nice video, David.
Dave, you really pulled back the curtain on this one. I pictured you living in a house with a broad porch in the outback like in "Quiggley Downunder." The picture of your street really killed the illusion. I'll get over it with a cup of tea, a bex, and little lie down.
Sorry to disappoint you Dwayne, I had forgotten about Quigley Down Under, which might be a good thing. We live in a new bushland estate but it hasn't rained in months so everything looks brown. We have just started the wet season so things will green up in no time. We go from mowing the lawn once every two months to twice a week 🤦♂️😄
That movie is probably best forgotten, Dave. Great looking yard. Sorry to hear about the grass mowing season. It's the same hear during mid summer. Yard work cuts into the radio work and the humidity is so thick you need a big knife to cut it.😉
Traeger pedal... never heard of it, now I know though, brilliant invention. There are still parts in the north of sweden that You could call "the back of bourke" but I'm blessed with a comfortable life in the southeast with reliable power😄
Great work as always, Dave! Regarding the cracks in the transparent plastics there's epoxy stuff with very low surface tension used to repair cracks in glass or plexiglass. You apply it with a syringe like thingy and it's getting "sucked" in to the crack and makes it practically invisible. Then just scrape the excess off and polish it. Seems you have an automotive shop nearby that probably would have it. :)

To get the scratches, fog, hazing out of clear plastic, I use two products: Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish and Novus #2. Start with Mothers and apply with a cheap dollar store ultra absorbent cloth and apply Novus to finish. Usually only takes one application, two at most. Buff with a microfiber cloth. Works great on any plastic including eyeglasses with plastic lenses.
That was a great straightforward restore. A good alternative to listening to Any Questions on BBC Radio 4, which is full of politicians and hot air. Keep up the good work; I can hardly wait for the next one.
In the states they carry a plastic cleaner called Novus. I suggest you order a small three part kit and try it for bad clear plastic scratches! Ebay. Amazon and elsewhere. On the plastic cabinet mark try non whitening white toothpaste . Trick with the paint pen is to use a small brush to coax the globs down to an overall flat level. Like Carl's replacement knobs! Excellent restore on this radio David.
Thanks for another interesting project video. Re. at 30:16 the trimmer cap type was common for Philips compact bakelite case radios in the 1940's, and they had to be aligned by winding/unwinding the wire over the core at each trimmer: a MAJOR pain....
Hi Harri, thank you. I've seen them in the Philips radios too and some other brands. I don't play with those capacitors, I use them as the base adjustment and adjust around them. I did have a broken one once and replaced it with an adjustable trimmer. Thanks Harri 🙂
Another great restore ! It sounds great and looks great too. I had an American Five and listened to it all night also.. The song I remember that came on every morning was "Red Rubber Ball" by Cyrkle. I have those words embedded in my head forever!

I also have one of those Palec Valve/Tube testers , and it's not user friendly at all. The Brain Box works overtime whenever I use it. Looking forward to your NEXT RADIO ADVENTURE.

Great job as always, I use car rubbing compound on plastics, works very well, also brings Bakelite to a mirror shine. Those new knobs really finish off the set nicely.
Thanks markpirateuk, I use auto cutting compounds too but a bit cautious with this plastic, I have had some react to them in the past. That's why I suggested testing it on the bottom first 😊
For the before/after transitions (cleaning, caps, etc.) see if you can’t find a clip of the Star Trek transporter sound. 😂👍🏻 The new knobs look smashing indeed.
David! Good to see another video from you! This was indeed an interesting radio. It was a wonderful bit of "luck" that no alignment was required since you couldn't adjust the transformers. Lots of interesting things to learn in this one too. Things like what you used to clean the plexiglass and how you overcame the problems in the process. Those knobs are really cool! I wonder if you would accept a challenge from me. The challenge, should you decide to accept it, is to design and build from scratch a vacuum tube radio. In fact, I'll give you a choice of three. The one I would prefer is choice number 3. 1. A.M. Broadcast only. 2. A.M. Broadcast plus Shortwave. 3. A.M. Broadcast, Shortwave, and FM. I really appreciate your videos very much. Back to this one once more as I work through more of the hours that God keeps piling on my plate, reminds me of the AM/FM/Cassette set that I had in Vietnam. It was stolen from me when I went home on emergency leave as my son was having a problem coming into the world. I never found another quite like it, it was a Hitachi. Well about a year ago now I found one on Ebay (could be the same one?? Doubt that!) and ordered it, I repaired it and now it sits beside my bed as it did in my bunker in Nam back in 1970.
@@DavidTipton101 When I was a young lad in grammar school, I spent summers with some of my many uncles or aunts on their respective farms. One of the places was my favorite as they had a son exactly my age (I was a MONTH OLDER!) and we had a blast playing when we were not working. I usually went to their place when they were working cattle, their "farm" was really more of a ranch. Working cattle amounted to doing the yearlings, hold them down, cut their nuts off, then run them through a chute where we would dehorn them, give them injections for diseases that plagued them, and many still needed branding so that was done as well. It was very easy to get injured on these jobs, but usually it was not bad enough to see a doctor. Anyhow my aunt always nagged her husband that they should at least pay me something for all the work, but he insisted "you don't pay FAMILY!" So after one particularly hard session, it was time to go home she walked in with a used radio, it must have been an all American 5, I don't recall the brand but it had tubes that got damn hot, had a blue case with the tuner on the top of the set, volume on the front and a huge speaker. It had been used but not abused so it became my bedside radio. Much like your tale, I often went to sleep to the rock and roll tunes out of Bismarck ND (130 miles North of us) and awoke to the morning weather report and a bit of old rock. I left it at home when I got married, and have no idea what ever happened to it after that.
That's a lovely radio, very nice design. And excellent results, as always! I like the "these are not the Droids we're looking for" Jedi gesture when changing caps. I need to learn that trick, oh Mighty Master. I can think of many, many applications.
That era produced some nice practical radio designs. The insto cap replacement saves me a lot of time but requires many years of study and practice, it's not for the faint hearted 😊
Way back when I was a soldier, we had to repaint numbers on the Jeep bumpers. What we did was to cover them with masking tape, then with a razor blade, cut out the letters and numbers then paint the white numbers on the olive drab bumpers. (this was WAY back before camo paint became a thing and EVERYTHING in the Army was either black (boots -tires-etc) or olive drab green (SERGEANT I want to be a lean green fighting machine!)
Great job as always! I think the new Knobs made the radio GLOW! P.S. when I clean the tar from smoke, I use a product called "Purple Power concentrated" it just dissolves the gunk.
Surprisingly, I can get PPC very close to me but only in a 20 liter (5 US Gal) container 🙄 The stuff on the IF transformers was a sealing material used to seal the transformer slugs. Engine degreaser might be an idea though Bruce 👍😊
First, and foremost Dave, I for one definitely enjoyed viewing this video. However, I’m a little bit jealous: the double pole, single throw mains switch on your radio turned out to be a successful repair. I wasn’t so fortunate when mending the single pole, single throw mains switch on a Pye, model P35 radio I’m currently working on ...it no fair Boohoo 😢 LOL! Joking aside my friend, Australia manufactured some very lovely looking radios: the ones you restore, and bring back to life, certainly bare that one out. Apart from that ugly looking French radio you restored a few months ago, you definitely know how to choose good looking Vintage Radios. The radio you have just restored certainly substantiates what I’m saying here! It looks good; it works good, and it sounds good. I’m not too far away from completing the restoration of two Philco ‘Hippo’ model 46-420 radios. With a decent gust of wind blowing me foreword, I hope to have them uploaded onto UA-cam before the end of November. I’m hoping the foggy, extremely wet, and frosty weather does not slow me down too much since it takes at least a generous hour for my workshop to warm up LOL. Best regards, Phil.
Hi Phil, thank you. I did repair a PYE power switch on one of my earlier videos. it was a four stage switch including the tone control with the first position being the power on. I drilled it apart I think and bolted it back together, link below, it starts at about 21 minutes, it's an early video so I apologise in advance 🙄 I can understand an Englishman not liking a French radio 😄 I like the look of the Hippo radios, I look forward to your video on them. I REALLY 😴 like the "V" shaped speaker 🔊 grille!! This has to be the Chevy Bel Air of radios 📻!! 1958 is a year very worthy 👏 of that. I'm not sure if the speaker in this radio is field coil, or permanent magnet. Bakelite case, or are ya gonna tell me different? I watch your videos because they are so relaxing, you have the most personable manner and voice and you are restoring pieces of Australian manufacturing history. This set was probably made the year I was born. It was made here in Melbourne either at EIA's Clayton plant or the South Melbourne plant (more likely). It breaks my heart to see the remnants of a once-great industry. Having toured the Clayton plant as a kid (I had a cousin who worked there) I was awe struck! It was big enough to fit three jumbo jets, I reckon, and it was a hive of activity because they had three whitegoods lines, a television line, a radio line and a record-making plant. The ladies who did the assembly and wiring work were incredible to watch...their dexterity was amazing. The other thing was (and not many people know this) that EIA also made wonderful electronics for the defence industry and had already made excellent prototype colour tv sets for the eventual switch over the colour. When Philips took control all that work in colour sets was chucked out in favour of the ubiquitous Philips K9A chassis but that's another story...

I have heard of the Astor facilities at Clayton, I understand they were hiring one month and within 2 months had mostly shutdown with the the government decision to remove tariffs.

@@DavidTipton101 Yes, that's 100% correct. Gough Whitlam did many good things for Australia but one of the worst things he did was to sign Australia up to the Lima Accords which meant that in '73 he dumped all tariffs on consumer electronics. That effectively destroyed the industry in weeks. It didn't help that EIA was, by then, majority owned by Philips who were ruthless is shutting down the plant after Gough would not even consider one of the industry pleas for assistance. After that there was a domino effect in the consumer electronics industries here and they all fell...even the mighty AWA, which shrank down to building defence equipment and then morphed into a group owned by Mitsubishi Electric and is now a computer service company. The only electronics industry to survive the bloodbath (for a while, at least) was local assembly of colour tv sets which continued with various companies until the early 90s. The Lima Accords gave us globalisation. This gave us cheaper consumer goods but it decimated the Australian workforce and the poverty created by globalisation brought in the drug problems and petty crime problems. The rest is history. Gone are the halcyon days you and I knew when whoever wanted to work could get a job...most of the stuff we bought was made here and most of it was built to be serviceable. How times have changed and not for the better, sadly.
My family had the same model in our kitchen. Great radio that has stood the test of time, Ours also needed the caps replaced and also a couple of electrolytics over the years. Radio was on for around 8 hrs a day.
Only one suggestion, if i may The mains wiring to the power on/off switch, if you were worried about the closeness to the power transformer, you could use a bit of heat shrink over the switch terminals and a bit of sheet plastic ( old ice cream lid cut down ) glued to the side of the transformer.
Other than that another one "done and dusted". Love your work, keep it up.

It's interesting that you still have AM Oldies stations! When I was growing up in the late 60's - early 70's, We had more than a few "top 40" AM stations. The typical weekend was spent cruising the main drags with "top 40" hits blasting. Pretty accurately depicted in the movie "American Graffiti." It's nice being able to bring back a radio of that era and the memories that came with it. You are truly a perfectionist!
Hi George, it was the same here back in the AM days. We had two oldies stations until recently but one was bought out and changed to sports station. Or should I say an ad station interrupted by sport. The national station plays a bit of pop music from time to time as well. Thanks George 😊

Your restoration videos have become my favorite, now obviously the contrast of a horrible looking radio restored to its factory beauty is more satisfying, but a radio like this that makes for fond memories as its from your childhood sure makes sense. In a way, the better state its in before restoration, the better the end result, cant fix things that are too far gone.

lol, your humour cracks me up! I didn't like the look of it when I first saw it, but after you cleaned it up it came out nice. The new knobs made a huge difference to the look of the radio. Being a NON-Australian, I have to admit that although I do get the Cup of Tea and the Good Lie Down, I haven't a clue what "BEX" is.
Bex was a compound analgesic sold in Australia in the 1950's and 1960's. Bit of a country in joke but had serious medical consequences For more information see Wikipedia.

Bex brings back memories of the naughty ditties we made up at school replacing the words in the Bex ad with some other choice Aussie language. Modesty prevents me from repeating them here! As an aside...it's a good thing they stopped selling Bex and Vincent powders because they used to be full of phenacetin which prompted kidney cancer. The rub of it is that the formulations both companies used were very effective painkillers on a par with Panadeine Forte (paracetamol and codeine, for US viewers).

Hello again David, i must say i really enjoyed this one because it got us to know you a little more. I of course don't have a clue as to how big a family you grew up in, but i know now you had at least one brother and have fond memories of the time spent with him. Your narration of it brought me back to a time where as a kid the radio in the kitchen was the most important part of our lives when i was young. Living in Canada we have to deal with many snow storms and blizzards during the winter months and although the winters have been less snowy for the past 20 years or so (no doubt due to climate change), in the 60's and 70's it was a common occurence to close down schools during bad snow storms in order to remove all the snow from the streets. The school closing were always announced very early on the radio first. So whenever it had been snowing all night we the four children would gather in the kitchen just to listen to the radio to see if our school had indeed been closed or not. I remember how we would burst in joy when they said our school was closed. Then we would all put on our snow suits and go play outside in the snow. Our favourite sport was to climb all the way up to the third story balcony and jump into the deep snow. Sometimes my little brothers would get buried so deep i had to use a shovel to dig them out. It would make my mom freak out and i could see her panic and scream through the kitchen window. But there was never any casualties aside from a little snow getting inside our suits. My personal record after what we refer to as the storm of the century in 1974 getting over 5 feet of snow in one day, was to jump all the way down from the roof of the building. To this day i still hold the bragging rights around the neighbourhood, for being the only guy to have done it and lived to tell the tale. Also watching you bring this one back to life i was thinking to myself: ''Man that looks so easy for him''. Thank's for sharing sir i really savoured it.

This Radio is the third you've restored that I've not long worked on. This one in particular I only just put in back in its cabinet yesterday. Mine has a white cabinet but had a big stain on top. Carl's has quite a few items that you can't get anywhere else. There used to be a couple more selling Caps and what not but have disappeared so Carl's is the best of who's left. I've been looking at a 3D printer to make cabinet parts .Be nice if you could make a whole cabinet but the printer would have to be huge and I'm not sure how the plastic would handle heat. So far I've been making the knobs on the lathe with a brass insert that way their not so delicate.

That chassis is pretty clean for a 1958 vintage radio. Looking back I can't remember my childhood radios but I'm 70 yrs old lol. Well I would have never thought of a lens cleaning kit to clean that plastic dial plastic great idea. Great looking and sounding radio.

A nice easy one for a change! Bring back the memories of youth, good stuff! Some of the big box hardware stores here in the U.S. have started stocking 6 foot (3M) extension cords both in 2 and 3 prong with the cloth covering, very reasonable price. Just cut the end off that you don't want. I have repaired a lot of headlights, I find that moving only one direction, not in circles is the quickest way to get through the process. Each time you change grit you change the direction by 90 deg until you see that all of your marks are gone. I start depending on the plastic at about 600 grit wet and dry paper, use water as a lube. Finish with 6000 grit then polish. Circles will give you swirl marks and make it very hard to see if you have removed all of the prior grit marks. You are just working harder than you need to. I like your knobs... that might sound a bit odd out of context ! LOL!

Nice thing to start my Friday morning off with. I’m sure it evoked some fond memories getting this up and running again. I have a 1950’s Telecictor Cub. A rare thing from the West Midlands, U.K. with only a few thousand being made. It was my grans so fond memories whenever I look at it. So good to see more reproduction parts being made so these great looking old sets can get a new lease of life. Another nice job there and look forward to your next project as always.

Good job once again, thank you. It occurs to me, that all radios of the 50s-60s had bakelite cabinets rather than timber. I did my Radio apprenticeship in 1960 in Germany and at that time I recall only Phillips had a little bakelite radio. All other German makes had timber cabinets.

I was Browsing on Ebay the other day for the hifi separates I bought in the 60's when I started work. It's all there, the amp turntable and speakers. I was tempted to buy them to remind me of my youth but retro hifi is pretty expensive now and I'm just too tight fisted to open my wallet. Ah well the memories are just as good anyway.

Sorry to disappoint you Dwayne, I had forgotten about Quigley Down Under, which might be a good thing. We live in a new bushland estate but it hasn't rained in months so everything looks brown. We have just started the wet season so things will green up in no time. We go from mowing the lawn once every two months to twice a week 🤦♂️😄
That movie is probably best forgotten, Dave. Great looking yard. Sorry to hear about the grass mowing season. It's the same hear during mid summer. Yard work cuts into the radio work and the humidity is so thick you need a big knife to cut it.😉

Great work as always, Dave! Regarding the cracks in the transparent plastics there's epoxy stuff with very low surface tension used to repair cracks in glass or plexiglass. You apply it with a syringe like thingy and it's getting "sucked" in to the crack and makes it practically invisible. Then just scrape the excess off and polish it. Seems you have an automotive shop nearby that probably would have it. :)

To get the scratches, fog, hazing out of clear plastic, I use two products: Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish and Novus #2. Start with Mothers and apply with a cheap dollar store ultra absorbent cloth and apply Novus to finish. Usually only takes one application, two at most. Buff with a microfiber cloth. Works great on any plastic including eyeglasses with plastic lenses.

In the states they carry a plastic cleaner called Novus. I suggest you order a small three part kit and try it for bad clear plastic scratches! Ebay. Amazon and elsewhere.
On the plastic cabinet mark try non whitening white toothpaste . Trick with the paint pen is to use a small brush to coax the globs down to an overall flat level.
Like Carl's replacement knobs! Excellent restore on this radio David.

Thanks for another interesting project video. Re. at 30:16 the trimmer cap type was common for Philips compact bakelite case radios in the 1940's, and they had to be aligned by winding/unwinding the wire over the core at each trimmer: a MAJOR pain....
Hi Harri, thank you. I've seen them in the Philips radios too and some other brands. I don't play with those capacitors, I use them as the base adjustment and adjust around them. I did have a broken one once and replaced it with an adjustable trimmer. Thanks Harri 🙂

Great job as always, I use car rubbing compound on plastics, works very well, also brings Bakelite to a mirror shine.

Thanks markpirateuk, I use auto cutting compounds too but a bit cautious with this plastic, I have had some react to them in the past. That's why I suggested testing it on the bottom first 😊
For the before/after transitions (cleaning, caps, etc.) see if you can’t find a clip of the Star Trek transporter sound. 😂👍🏻

Good to see another video from you! This was indeed an interesting radio. It was a wonderful bit of "luck" that no alignment was required since you couldn't adjust the transformers.
Lots of interesting things to learn in this one too. Things like what you used to clean the plexiglass and how you overcame the problems in the process.
Those knobs are really cool!
I wonder if you would accept a challenge from me. The challenge, should you decide to accept it, is to design and build from scratch a vacuum tube radio. In fact, I'll give you a choice of three. The one I would prefer is choice number 3.
1. A.M. Broadcast only.
2. A.M. Broadcast plus Shortwave.
3. A.M. Broadcast, Shortwave, and FM.

Thanks Wayne. I might just decline your radio building challenge at the moment thanks, no time 😄 If the IF Xformers need adjusting there are ways around it if I couldn't get the slugs to move. Those knobs would be tricky to reproduce 😯😀
Back to this one once more as I work through more of the hours that God keeps piling on my plate, reminds me of the AM/FM/Cassette set that I had in Vietnam. It was stolen from me when I went home on emergency leave as my son was having a problem coming into the world. I never found another quite like it, it was a Hitachi. Well about a year ago now I found one on Ebay (could be the same one?? Doubt that!) and ordered it, I repaired it and now it sits beside my bed as it did in my bunker in Nam back in 1970.

@@DavidTipton101 When I was a young lad in grammar school, I spent summers with some of my many uncles or aunts on their respective farms. One of the places was my favorite as they had a son exactly my age (I was a MONTH OLDER!) and we had a blast playing when we were not working. I usually went to their place when they were working cattle, their "farm" was really more of a ranch. Working cattle amounted to doing the yearlings, hold them down, cut their nuts off, then run them through a chute where we would dehorn them, give them injections for diseases that plagued them, and many still needed branding so that was done as well. It was very easy to get injured on these jobs, but usually it was not bad enough to see a doctor. Anyhow my aunt always nagged her husband that they should at least pay me something for all the work, but he insisted "you don't pay FAMILY!" So after one particularly hard session, it was time to go home she walked in with a used radio, it must have been an all American 5, I don't recall the brand but it had tubes that got damn hot, had a blue case with the tuner on the top of the set, volume on the front and a huge speaker. It had been used but not abused so it became my bedside radio. Much like your tale, I often went to sleep to the rock and roll tunes out of Bismarck ND (130 miles North of us) and awoke to the morning weather report and a bit of old rock. I left it at home when I got married, and have no idea what ever happened to it after that.

That's a lovely radio, very nice design. And excellent results, as always! I like the "these are not the Droids we're looking for" Jedi gesture when changing caps. I need to learn that trick, oh Mighty Master. I can think of many, many applications.
That era produced some nice practical radio designs. The insto cap replacement saves me a lot of time but requires many years of study and practice, it's not for the faint hearted 😊

Way back when I was a soldier, we had to repaint numbers on the Jeep bumpers. What we did was to cover them with masking tape, then with a razor blade, cut out the letters and numbers then paint the white numbers on the olive drab bumpers. (this was WAY back before camo paint became a thing and EVERYTHING in the Army was either black (boots -tires-etc) or olive drab green (SERGEANT I want to be a lean green fighting machine!)

Great job as always! I think the new Knobs made the radio GLOW! P.S. when I clean the tar from smoke, I use a product called "Purple Power concentrated" it just dissolves the gunk.
Surprisingly, I can get PPC very close to me but only in a 20 liter (5 US Gal) container 🙄 The stuff on the IF transformers was a sealing material used to seal the transformer slugs. Engine degreaser might be an idea though Bruce 👍😊

First, and foremost Dave, I for one definitely enjoyed viewing this video.
However, I’m a little bit jealous: the double pole, single throw mains switch on your radio turned out to be a successful repair. I wasn’t so fortunate when mending the single pole, single throw mains switch on a Pye, model P35 radio I’m currently working on ...it no fair Boohoo 😢 LOL!
Joking aside my friend, Australia manufactured some very lovely looking radios: the ones you restore, and bring back to life, certainly bare that one out. Apart from that ugly looking French radio you restored a few months ago, you definitely know how to choose good looking Vintage Radios. The radio you have just restored certainly substantiates what I’m saying here! It looks good; it works good, and it sounds good.
I’m not too far away from completing the restoration of two Philco ‘Hippo’ model 46-420 radios. With a decent gust of wind blowing me foreword, I hope to have them uploaded onto UA-cam before the end of November. I’m hoping the foggy, extremely wet, and frosty weather does not slow me down too much since it takes at least a generous hour for my workshop to warm up LOL.

Hi Phil, thank you. I did repair a PYE power switch on one of my earlier videos. it was a four stage switch including the tone control with the first position being the power on. I drilled it apart I think and bolted it back together, link below, it starts at about 21 minutes, it's an early video so I apologise in advance 🙄

I REALLY 😴 like the "V" shaped speaker 🔊 grille!! This has to be the Chevy Bel Air of radios 📻!! 1958 is a year very worthy 👏 of that. I'm not sure if the speaker in this radio is field coil, or permanent magnet. Bakelite case, or are ya gonna tell me different? Hi Richard, we are all great thanks. It has been good for me in retirement, I joined the local radio club which has been great as well. My power supply consists of an isolation transformer, a Variac and my dim bulb (current limiter) box. I did a video on the dim bulb, you can find it in the link below.
