- A friend bought this radio only to find it was a battery set. It looks to have been 'restored' not that long ago but has been left to deteriorate. I have been tasked to resurrect this relic from the thirties, my first job is to evict the mice remnants from the set. Can this piece of history be brought back from the brink?

The Signal Generator is a project kit from a local electronics magazine called Silicon Chip, there is a sister publication in the UK called Practical Electronics, it was featured in the April 2018 edition but mine has a oscilloscope function as well which I don't use. There may be a later edition in PE with that feature.

Really interesting set with the dial lights and capacitor bank. Bush always like to put the components in a row on phenolic tag strips which makes that aspect of servicing them easier. But they're always constructed in a way that makes rewiring or stripping down the chassis quite a challenge. Great camera work and editing Dave, makes watching far more enjoyable. Looking forward to the next episode.

Man that turned out beautiful. I especially love when you redo an entire capacitor like in other videos, where you melt the wax or in this case tin to replace the insides. Thats dedication.

There's nothing better, cleaning the pan afterwards kinda takes the shine off it though 😄 I was surprised how well the chassis came up, I hadn't expected anything like that. Thanks Paul 🙂

I really liked the smart way the resistors and caps were laid out. And the little light bar dial pointer was magic as was the band change spindle. Someone clearly had been given free rein to design it rather than being told to just do what they always did with a bit of an improvement here and there.
Hi Andy, it was pretty easy to service and I love the dial too. Maybe some radio companies back then were run by engineers and not accounts, thanks Andy 🙂

To me, in an age of modern electronics it's much more fascinating to watch you rebuild vintage radios that have robust metal parts and discreet components. Always appreciate your videos Dave.

Very bad design IMHO. A battery operated radio that needs to power a light just to tune it. At least it turns off, I guess.

Great episode-one of the most fascinating. Love it when you start with a radio that looks like death warmed over. I know the final result will be terrific, and wasn't disappointed with this one. Especially liked the PCB testing and your rebuilding the capacitor cans. Incidentally, did your wife approve the use of that nice frying pan for opening old electronic components? (Mine absolutely would not!) BTW, always appreciate your production sensibilities-what to include, what to leave out, camera work, audio quality, etc. There's never any needless distraction from your best-in-class narration and resourceful techniques. Hi Moshe, thank you. It cleaned up very well, I wasn't too keen about the project to start with but it's coming along nicely. The pan is one we don't use so there was no issue with me using it. I put a lot into the video itself so nice to get some feedback, thanks Moshe 🙂

Great vid! As a valve radio collector and repairer for over 40 years the first radio I had was a Marconi set that had a notorious 'PITCH' wound power transformer (30s) that bellowed smoke when powered up... 😗 It also had about 10 taps off it! A complete NIGHTMARE to recreate !! Now has pride of place as I was 14 at the time! It also relied on a 20 metre run of aerial ! (back garden😗 - along the washing line 👀😀) It used light bulbs 👀😀🤣 PEN valves et that were HUGE! It also suffers from major drift on the tuning / reception of stations et 👀 It also has POWERED speaker system with high voltage to coils on the speaker assembly et😗 I'm surprised that your Bush radio is circa 1936?? The power with the separate rechargeable accumulator (motor garages et exchangeable) and the build et is more early 1950s ? 🤔Bush were notorious for using those notorious green dropper resistors turning the live chassis into death traps.. NOT that they were alone re that power option, Phillips / Philco et were also guilty of those cheap and nasty builds? 1940s were mostly the 'war limited resources valve radio sets.' many of which ended up on the fire or scrap heap. 👀 I worked with mates of mine who were in a band, servicing their Mullard valve amp units et A good wholesome SQUEAL from them re the talents of a decent lead guitarist.. 👀😀 Growing up on a farm in Cornwall (UK) I serviced the cow shed AMERICAN radio that had powered tuning with sub miniature valves et (Apparently the milk yield went up if the cows listened to music 😗🤣🤣) You mention the quality of sound et but we must remember that a loudspeaker (probably 3 ohm - not alternative 15 ohm ) would not sound that good out of the wood cabinet as the wood would help re resonance / depth / warmth of sound et 😗 The loudspeaker OUTPUT transformers on early sets were also prone to short circuits / blow outs et Anyways thanks for sharing a great vid and STAY safe!
Hi Arthur, thank you. I have had pitch transformers too but found someone too rebuild them, saved a lot of dirty work. The radio is from 1936, there was a mains powered one with the same case, I think it had a transformer in it. I have a number of UK sets with the green dropper resistor and I also restored a cow shed radio used to serenade the cows. Thanks Arthur, stay safe 🙂
What a fascinating radio! I know that battery sets were the standard before people got AC installed in their houses but I don't often see one brought to life. That lighted dial looks like it came out of one of my all-time favorite movies, Metropolis! It's interesting to see how radio designers solved their technical problems back then. I also really liked your capacitor rebuilds. Even your cap fryer is in much better condition than most people's egg fryers! Looking forward to the followup video.
Thanks Sincerely Yours, this is only the second true battery set I've worked on so it's a bit different for me too. Metropolis! I haven't seen that for a long time. It's a nice pan but it dished out and is useless on and induction cooktop. Part 2 next this Friday 🙂

Once again, your tenacity to solve problems that most of us would baulk at, is truly amazing. Are you sure you never did this as a profession? I'd never seen those sealed capacitor banks before, and would certainly have no idea how to open and repair them! Another superb restoration of the radio. Hi Jim, no this wasn't my profession but I was an engineer. I hadn't seen tinned capacitors in oil before, sealed in pitch but not oil. It was only a month before this that the radio club was talking about them which helped. Thanks Jim, part 2 next week 🙂

This radio may be one of a few left of the battery version. They would have had a short life span particularly when the batteries became difficult to get or electricity arrived. Thanks Dennis, I'm getting on pretty good now. Thank you for watching 🙂

Hi Andrew, thank you. The set is a mix, older style valves but superhet, I guess battery valves hadn't caught up. I did get some power supplies from Graham Parslow but that is next week 😉
I really enjoyed this one thanks. This is not a common radio that you would normally see. I love how you cleaned up the metal work. It looks great. And the dial mechanism is super cool. It also brought a smile to my face to see you have identical same analogue multimeter that I do.
Thanks Seiskid, it's a rare radio alright. The chassis cleaned up well, I learned something there and the dial is very cool. I have seen that meter with many brands stamped on it, works OK though 🙂

First, the good news. A truly interesting radio! Hard to believe the alignment was so close after all the component changing. Back to factory spec maybe? The not so good news is I fear you've lost your amateur status, Dave! Far fewer are the "I think this ... ," "my guess is ..." and the "uh oh's" of your early videos! 😂

Hi Allen, I broke into a cold sweat wondering what the bad news was, I can explain the more positive attitude, it's from advanced editing, I simply cut them out, haha... not really, I am more experienced now. It aligned pretty easily which was good, it could have been a nightmare. Thank you Allen, that shrimp was hard to peel! 😀
That is a very interesting Radio. Never saw one with the lighted dial. Your attention to detail always amazes me. I am glad you are on the mend so well your doctor said you could do heavier work in the garage. Always a joy watching your videos.

Glad to hear the doc cleared you for some heavy work. A step in the right direction. When you mentioned a "bit of a whack" it brought back a memory of a mercury switch that once 'whacked" me off my feet. Looking forward to next week. Throw another cap on the Barby, mate.

Hi DAVE! I was up late and just checked your feed. I was happy to see a new video! I am surprised you were able to hold back and not paint the chassis. Using the pan to cook sausages later... you sound like a blacksmith. Just throw the metal in the fire and Shell be right LOL It sure is nice to have a soldering iron big enough to do the job! :D 80+ year old pots are kind of hard to get, the replacement will be fine. Heck the rest of the resistors don't quite match what used to be installed, it will be fine! I do love the tuning dial. I can't wait until the follow up video. Stay well my friend :D
Hi Wayne, I didn't want to cover 95 years of history with paint and it came up so well I was very happy with it. I did wipe it out before the snags went in 😉 I think the capacitors were probably OK, if they hadn't leaked they may have gone a few more years. I got that iron when I was about 21. You sure did a nice job on the restoration of the circuitry, and having watched so many of your videos here, it is a joy to see how your skills have progressed to a point where you don't have much trouble figuring failures out quickly. It always makes my day to see a video from you. Your adventure with the capacitor banks was personally very nostalgic. One of the first radios I tried to restore was a Bosch 5AC. It had a box with 5 capacitors in it. They were in a box filled with potting compound. I used a propane torch to melt the compound letting it drip into a jar. The smoke was horrendous but I had the foresight to do this in my driveway. Used a perforated board to mount the new capacitors. To bad it was wasted effort. The power transformer was burned out.

When you video radio restore after restore you never know which one will strike a chord with the viewer. This one hit me. This is such excellent work, while it might seem to be a mundane restore, without any fanfare or drama, it displays all kinds of skill. I can't wait for the next part, your woodworking and case finishing are certainly on-par with your electronics skills. Beautiful job, you took all the right turns and did all the right things here.

It really cleaned up well. I think most people were fascinated by the tuning dial, including myself. It is a shame you don't have the original back antenna coil unit, to really finish it off. This is one Bush Radio I've not seen before, it's certainly an interesting design. Another great job, I will be watch the next part.

In spite of the lemon freshness, this has got to be one of your most difficult restorations. I am so glad that the doctor cleared you for some things which you were not able to do before. I had a triple bi-pass about a year and a half ago and I couldn't do anything for three months until my sternum grew together again. No Hoover to vacuum. No cleaning the bathroom. No scrubbing the kitchen floor. ("David, we're having guests over tonight for dinner, so you don't have to cook sausages on the barbie. Have you seen one of my wine glasses? It better not be in your workshop." Hee, hee!)
Hi Stanley, it was up there for workload at least. I'm pretty free to do what I can, I'm glad you op went OK, pity you couldn't do all that cleaning. Guests over for dinner would be more reason to light the barbie, I have the pan all greased up and ready to go, oh yeah, BTW, we're a wine glass short 🙁😉
