  • A friend asked me to restore his 1938 Healing 448E radio and he wants to play it in his store. He has done a beautiful job on the cabinet and he wants the radio chassis to look original. I can't make it work though. The US hardware grommet supplier I mentioned in the video is: McMastr-Carr

    My Digital Signal Generator:
The Signal Generator is a project kit from a local electronics magazine called Silicon Chip, there is a sister publication in the UK called Practical Electronics, it was featured in the April 2018 edition but mine has a oscilloscope function as well which I don't use. There may be a later edition in PE with that feature.

@@DavidTipton101 One of the best aspects of your channel is that you show us your thought processes. As a master electrician, I'm quite capable of doing the electrical work the other radio shows present as fait accompli. What fascinates me about your work is the application of logic and outright brilliance to find solutions.
You and Mister Radio show your mistakes, very few of the others do. Yet - it's from the mistakes that we learn the most.
One complaint: You need to post more videos. Many more. Not that I'm a spoiled, demanding brat or anything....

Hi Alejandro. Sadly the music radio station I tune into changed to 24 hour sport last week, we still have one music station but it's difficult to get where I live. It caused quite an uproar, the station was a ratings winner and they shut it down, very sad 😥

@@DavidTipton101 hey, that's a shame. Here, most AM stations are 80% news and opinion and some late-night music broadcasts. and weekends... all sports. but the habit of listening classical music, jazz, rock or tango, tango! I live in Argentina and there are hardly any tango programs on the radio!! FM is something else. but I like AM. And about electronics, I congratulate you, every day there are less of us who know about vacuum tubes.

Another promising project! You really did well to find that IF transformer fault. I don’t know how it could have de tuned itself while you were changing the caps. I never would have thought to check if the alignment had changed.
It’s a pity those bikies came into the leather shop and talked over your video! You should’ve gone outside and kicked over their Harleys. Or not - we do want to see more of your videos!

By the way, regarding the leather workers finger getting cut while stitching, another UA-cam craftsman (Bedos Leatherworks) sews shoe welts on by hand, similarly to this type of stitching, but he fashioned himself a leather sleeve for his pinky, so that the thread doesn't slice through his skin.

That was a bit of a challenge, strange how the I.F. suddenly changed though, but looks like it's okay now. I've never re-stuffed capacitors, because I haven't done any radios with those type of capacitors. An interesting dial, looking forward to seeing it working.

That was great David, as usual, your skills with old radios are fantastic to watch. The added video of Trevor using his leather craftsmanship was also great to watch. It was particularly interesting for me because a few years ago one of my nephews had done something of a family history tree and I grew up never having met any of my grandparents. But what was found was that my grandfather on dads side was actually recorded on my dads birth certificate for his occupation, was that of a " Journeyman leatherworker ". Which basically meant, he worked day to day where he could pick up work as a horse leather worker, making and repairing leather things for horses. That was back in the late 1800s early 1900s.in Liverpool. My father was born in 1912 and grandad served in the 1st world war. It was interesting to see Trevor's hard worked hands and fingers made me wonder if my grandfather had hands just like that? Thanks David, thank you very much. 😎👍

Thank you Graham, Trevor was very helpful allowing me to film him. I would imagine your grandad had much tougher hands than Trevor, he would have done much of his work by hand back then and on the road as well, not much machinery at hand 👍🙂

Hi Dave, it was good to see that Paul Carlson gave you a mention in his recent video. The Healing company brings back a few memories, they had a large building here in the Adelaide CBD with a trade sales counter. I the early 1960s dad used to take me there when he was buying valves or other components. I remember they had a display professional audio equipment, Byer tape machines and Commonwealth Electronics transcription turntables. I was six or seven at the time and thought that the equipment was cool, and still do.

      @DavidTipton101  2 роки тому

Hi Peter, I'm sooo behind in watching other peoples videos, going away for a month upset things. I will get to Paul's video shortly. Back in the day you could go to all the manufacture's factories and the parts desk, they were good times for that. I can imagine being smitten by the equipment in the display, all shiny and new. They were pretty cool alright 👍🙂

I know how you feel when you seem to have broken something.
I've had times where i've stopped something dead, it worked before i touched it.
The sinking heart feeling is never nice.
Years ago i had a vcr to repair, but while i was turning the chassis over my jumper
sleeve caught one of the super fragile ferrite video heads, snapped off :-(
I didn't have any way to buy the double head drum assembly.
I had a stack of part worn oddball video heads, so i eyeballed one ferrite head.
It took me all night to mount the head on the head drum.
The ferrite head could twist left or right, in or out, and flat or lifted.
The head could only be set correctly at the manufacture. (critical)
My bodge worked!! record/play/tracking all seemed spot on.
i went to bed, the panic was over.
However there was something i didn't know about the gap angle in the ferrite head.
One head gap was seven degrees clockwise and the other anticlockwise.
I had picked the correct 7 degree ferrite without knowing, i was so lucky.
I learned a lesson, wear a T shirt with no sleeves lol.
Sorry about the extra long waffle :-(

Hi zx8401ztv, I have broken lots of things in my time. I wasn't too worried about this, I knew I would find the fault eventually. Your broken head story is another matter, that would have been devastating but you got it working again and that is uplifting so it all equals out 😊
