Love how they added the crux music to Dave climbing 🤣 surprisingly fun dynamic between the two. Was actually a little worried in the first minute or so haha
Great getting Alex on the show I love that guy. The Free Solo climb is the single most impressive feat any man has ever achieved it was unbelievable....
People have no idea how insane AH is. After watching Free Solo I watched a ton of climbing/alpinist docs and they all pretty much end with the protagonist dying. That sport is brutal. What he did is nothing short of astonishing. Also, if you get the chance watch Tommy Caldwell's doc, it will blow your mind.
He is absolutely an anomaly tbh. When it comes to free soloing 'professionally' no one comes close, I dont think most of the routes he did a decade ago have still been solo repeated yet. Usually gym climbers and free solo climbers are completely different groups with very different ethos, so even if gym climbers are technically way stronger, we dont see them soloing, but somehow this guy did 10 years of gym climbing and started soloing big walls because he didnt want to ask someone to belay him lmao. Still cant get over the fact that he solo'd 2000 feet and then did a v7 on el capitan
@@dsspiegel hard to tell as we only see a few holds on the route. Mostly solid jugs for hands, foot holds seem smaller than most beginner climbs, and it looks like there is some minor movement required and not just a straight ladder climb. It could definitely be an easier grade. Point of it is I'm still super impressed with Dave for making it to the top on his first climb at his age. He's awesome!
So crazy to see how long he’s been doing this! Climbers have long fascinated Dave. This is reminiscent - but way more PC - of his interview with Lynn hill fro the 80s!
Love Alex trying to lie about how hard it is. "No... it's pretty easy." 😅 Good on Dave to climb it properly and not excessively ham it up like some in his profession would. I'll have to check out the full interview.
I wish Dave would do a Netflix comedy special. Jay Leno does standup. I would love to see Dave. He's always been my favorite comedian since I saw his HBO special in the early 80s where he did a tour of Hollywood.
"i'll be right out Mom" 😆 Dave's still got it.
That was out of left field, so quick! Hilarious as usual
That is too funny
Pure artistry.
the thing about the vague advice is the most relatable thing i've ever heard as a rock climber.
Alex is just the chillest dude on the planet.
Nah he's hot
1. Dave has always been great with these man-on-the-street type bits
2. Genuinely impressive for a man in his 70s to be this physically fit
Those entry level routes are basically like climbing a ladder.
LOL, at least 3 people I regularly climb with are easily fitter and are in their seventies.
Don't forget Dave's been through heart bypass surgery.
@@williampolfus6975 I mean, ok, but one of the guys I climb with is on the list for a heart transplant. And no, I am not kidding.
@@JeanneNorthcutt That was funny to you?

Two of my favorite people from different lives together on screen....priceless. 😂
Two loves in one! Dave’s humor and Alex Honnold/Climbing!
Great getting Alex on the show I love that guy. The Free Solo climb is the single most impressive feat any man has ever achieved it was unbelievable....
Watch The Alpinist
Love the perfectly placed score from Free Solo. Bravo.
This is gold. All that’s missing is the audible laughter from the audience.
Letterman, Yay! I liked this video so much, it made me smile!
We need more of this!!!
Genius soundtrack for Dave's climb. I was on the edge of my seat. Go Dave, Go Alex.

He's also incredibly humble, and one of the nicest people I've ever met; and his mom is pretty damn awesome as well.
Those dudes in the 80s-90s were insane. Alex shook my hand once, nearly crushed it
Then you'll notice the music they used while David is climbing is from the end of Free Solo when Alex is topping out El Cap.

love the Free Solo soundtrack-nice touch
That music while Dave was climbing, LOL. Loved it. Loved this whole segment
That was awesome. And Dave was so helpful and insightful for Alex.. Ha ha! Excellent job, Dave!
Hey, Alex, you take care of our Dave. Thank you.
You're so brave, Dave!!! I would NEVER do this, and I'm at least 2 decades younger. So damn spry.....very impressive!
The collab we didn’t know we needed
Oh man, my 70 year old Dad tried rock climbing on a cruise and pretty much fell off immediately. This is so impressive.
The crossover I never expected
Omg. The crossover I never knew I needed
Maybe I should try and get a cab. 😂 I miss you everyday on TV, sir. You are the gold standard. ❤️
dude's 77... this is cool that he's doing it also what an odd but great mix of pop culture legends
Way to go Dave!
Alex Honnold Is On A Different Level Than Any Climber...Not Just His Physical Ability...But His Mental Game Is So Damn Strong.
I think it is hard for everyone to continue to seek out challenges as we age. Good for Dave and good for Alex for being patient and encouraging.
Wake the kids and phone neighbors, Dave went 50 ft up on a NYC climbing wall
Where is the rest of the video?? I need more of this!
I don’t believe they taped the entire thing, according to AH, it was a “live, unfilmed event with 200 people or so”
Nice send, Mr. Letterman!
I love it! Hahaha I finally watched Free Solo so this was perfectly timed for me.
Alex is such a beast. Just next level everything.
The collaboration I didn't know I needed
Thanks David, I now see chalk bags as M&M bags
I love the guy working Alex's ropes when he first climbs. Barely holding back a laugh as Dave gives "advice" to the worlds best climber lol
His 'do it again' moment has to be a throwback wink to this one: Lynn Hill on Letterman - 1989
dave's banter with the climbing guy was funny as ever 🤣🤣
the climbing guy… too good!
Him and Alex Honnold were having some great bits. Hilarious
the "climbing guy" is the Michael Jordan of climbing
"How many of you thought 'Oh, this old f**k will never do it'?" 😂
I am sheepishly raising my hand.
Dave giving Alex freaken Honnold climbing tips = Priceless😂
His fingers are from a different word, super cool 👍
Go Dave! “Send it!”
Get it Dave!!!!❤❤❤❤🎉🎉
77 years young
“maybe I should get a cab” 😂😂😂
You can tell Alex is having a good time 😆
Dave sending it!
Send it Dave!!! Lol
I think they started playing the Free Solo music for Alex getting to the top as Dave was getting to the top. xD
Never in my lifetime did I think I'd see Dave flash a top-roped climbing route. 😊
M&Ms in the chalk bag is genius 😂 I'm stealing that, sugar bonus before a crux
I love these videos hahaha
Props to Dave. Even though that's probably like a 5.6 route, still impressive! Two legends having a chat.
You think so? I would've guessed less than 5.6... Most people can't climb 5.6 on their first day, let alone 77-year-olds.

The m&m bag was a good gag
❤😮😮 Great job David 👏👏👍💯😁😄!!!
First he climbed with Lynn Hill, now Alex. This dude is wild, hahaha.
I didn't think Dave had any shot of doing this. Damn!!!!!

Lmao the Free Solo music
Dave sends his first big wall.
I wish Dave would do a Netflix comedy special. Jay Leno does standup. I would love to see Dave. He's always been my favorite comedian since I saw his HBO special in the early 80s where he did a tour of Hollywood.
Dave's first attempt at climbing was on his show with Lynn Hill in about 1989 or so.
" Hey Dave, that snow is getting brighter up there, Dave you're 90, stop bothering people! "
Honnold is a badass.
I believed in you, Dave! 😀
Was that the same stunt double that he used for Cabin Boy?
Need Dave back on TV!
Hahahahaha!! This is amazing!! Soooooo goood!!
Haha the Free Solo soundtrack in the back 👀
Respect mr. Lettermen!
That was actually very nice!
Send it!
Long before meeting Alex Honnold, Dave free-soloed Mount Rushmore of top 4 TV Host of all timed.
First Lynn Hill in the 90's, now Honnold. Smart guy
M and M's! I love it!
Also on UA-cam: Lynn Hill and Dave climb on his show (1989)
M&M's make friends!
Conan O'Brien gets an HBO MAX deal and flies to Thailand to climb a wall. Dave does it on UA-cam under three minutes.
That’s awesome that a man his age is able to climb at all, let alone pretty decently
My first thought: Dave is NOT going to climb that wall.
The guy's a monster at 70+.
Very good ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Google Alex, he’s an amazing climber.
Dave telling Alex Honnold where to put his foot.
This made me smile.......
Man is 30 years my senior and still in better shape.
It would be hilarious if Alex took Dave free soloing. I'd watch that.
"Send it!"
Now make this the debate.
Give that man a cigar, wait.......... never mind.
🤣🤣😍😍Alex is TOP
Dam Dave great work!
Yeah Dave! Welcome to the rest of your life!
m&ms in he chalk bag I love Dave. Why am I surprised he reached the top?
Keep on climbing😂
seems like Dave and Pewdiepie are on the same journey
Anybody know which gym in NY this is at?
What year was this?
Looking at Dave this is new. Not Dave the bit. :)
ye olde 2024
@@orchestratedpassage9468 Who would have thought a homeless Walt Whitman would be rock climbing with Alex?
@@jackstraw4129 I was seeing the ghost of John Muir but I like Uncle Walt too.
Pretty fly for a old white guy....... Good Job Dave !!!!
The thing is...watching him move steady, great range of motion, quick to reach. If you put a mask and wig on him, you might guess 55? 60?
