- So, I cut out the dialogue (...badly) and uploaded it again, fingers crossed that i don't lose my account. I've already incurred 2 out of 3 strikes from reuploading this freaking animatic and this is my third attempt. If I DO lose my account, I will probably make a new one with a similar name and I will post it on tumblr or instagram :) or maybe you'll see my videos pop up (who knows?)

This animatic really made me see Evan's mom's side. When I was just listening to the recording, I was kind of mad at her because she was being condescending ("maybe this year we buck up enough to see the world won't fall apart") but the way you draw her, I can see that she's really trying.
Yeah, as someone who was kind of in Evan’s situation (not the letters thing but the anxiety and not going to school thing) and my mom often said a lot of things like that, and seeing it in the show was… an experience. But yeah, irl (at least for me) it comes across as “I’m really trying but I don’t know what you need right now”
Eventhough this song is about mothers not knowing how to handle their sons, I also feel the song to be me in life in general. I need a map because I'm clueless of what I should do. I need help in my direction in life. Just like them, I'm flying blind.

I always thought that it was also reflecting Evan. He's flying completely blind throughout the whole play, just making everything up as he goes. Like, actually making it all up. It's cool how many ways this song can be interpreted.

tbh Connor's situation is partially caused by his family who only sees flaws in him and minimally shows love to him

His family used to be really nice. He let his mental state affect other people and they stopped when he needed it most. I'm not saying his family was the best but you gotta give them credit.

I'm also late but like I wanna voice my opinion anyway so
I can only truly blame Connor's father. His mother, Cynthia, tried her best to help Connor. This can be seen in the songs that didn't make it into the musical due to exploring the story of Connor too much. Afterall, the story is about Evan.
"In The Bedroom Down The Hall" shows that Cynthia tried to take Connor to therapists, hoping to somehow make him the same happy boy that he was when he was little. She gave it her all just to help her son, but it just wasn't enough. Perhaps, Connor was too far gone by then. This is also mentioned in the actual performance, right before "Words Fail".
However, Connor's father didn't want to help at all. He completely ignored his wife when she asked him to help Connor too. He thought that the therapy was simply unneccessary. Connor actually had the courage to ask for help! He told his parents that he was having suicidal thoughts. He opened up to them, he was so desperate to get somebody's help. And what did his father say?
"You're just seeking attention."
It's understandable why Zoe felt about Connor the way she did. She did have a good reason to hate him. Afterall, he lashed out his anger & instability on her, which traumatized her for so many years. Connor being gone actually felt like a relief for her. They were close when they were young, but they started growing apart as the years passed. That's why Zoe didn't want to mourn her brother's death.
His family wasn't the best, because every human being has flaws. But you just can't say that they were horrible to him all the time, because that's simply not true. His mother is a living proof of that.

whenever I listen to this song on its own, I can't help but picture Evan's mom as being kind of sarcastic and dismissive, but this animatic COMPLETELY turns that around for me. just the way you have her interacting with him makes her seem much more empathetic to the situation

Oh my God. Seeing this, Evan's mom reminds me so much of my mom. My brother struggles with mental illness and my mom, like Heidi towards Evan, is doing her best to cheer him up and support him. Heidi is trying her best. My heart goes out to her.

Ugh thank you so much for this! I hardly see anyone putting up animatics of this song probably because it's focusing on the moms but it's such an impactful and important part of the musical. It really gives an insight to the family dynamics and the moms thought processes and separate struggles in trying to connect to their sons. It's a nod to parenting struggles everywhere from the view OF the mothers which isn't something you seen done so realistically, but this really nails it on the head that most parents (and people) are literally making shit up as they go LOL.
You conveyed that super well with the characters as well, the facial expressions as well as the micro-expressions really sell the anguish they share, how much they love their family but just can't bridge the gap. The designs are all very realistic as well, the boys actually look like teenagers and the moms look like moms LOL

Just came here from a "good for you" animatic and from a lot of comments it just seems like nobody has heard this song?? They make it seem like being a (single) parent is easy, that somehow, once you put a kid onto the world, you become this wise guru who never gets or should get upset. That you somehow know all the right things to do or say.
Hell, for YEARS *I* was Evan. Only child with anxiety and a single mom who did everything fo take care of me. While I understand Evan, I'd never abandon my mom to worm my way into another family.
