- In this Sole Talk Sunday we will be talking about a few more well known sole in the Gumlite and NewFlex line from Vibram.
The Vibram Christy Sole, Middlebury and Long Haul as well as some of the new versions of those same models available in Vabram's Sole Factor Line.
These soles are known in the industries for work boots for meany years but are now become more popular with hikers, business men and even those who are just looking for great comfort or style in footwear.

Great video review, excellent explanation of the differences as well as the rationale for choosing between these options! Thanks for taking the time to do this!
I had the Christy sole on a pair of moc toe Thorogood boots. They wore out on concrete in no time. I used a leatherman and hand cut treads back into them and got 6 more months out of them.
I hope my Chippewas don't wear so fast. They were extremely comfortable though.
Is that why Thorogood no longer uses the Vibram Christy’s? I got a pair over a week ago that has their own sole.
Once the treads were gone, I just took it to a cobbler. He sanded it down evenly, and stuck on a newporter sole. I got to keep the cushion and got a better grip/harder wearing outsole on top.
This is the sole video, I was hoping for Allan!!
The best cobbler on UA-cam and Denver!! 😁
I love the Longhaul sole on my cowboy boots, very comfortable and decent in the winter too
Thanks for the details on these
Another great video
Love this. Hope you are teaching someone younger. Worth it to team with the community college and make a Cobbler class...
I kinda wish Vibram would make a gumlite midsole option. Like what I saw in their channel when I think a Sierra sole was added to a boot that already had the christy sole that was worn out. I’d love to have that option. Lol.
It’s a great thought but it wouldn’t be a good idea to stitch it after because the thread tension would rip through it
Cobblers Plus Inc. Nevermind. I just found the video. I was talking about something like the thorogood repair with a Sierra sole video but without sanding off the tread.
thank great video
Vibram christy sole I get about 10 months out of them and I’m a finish carpenter
is there a soft vibram that is slightly thicker than gumlite
I have worked in the residential roofing industry for nearly 25 years. I do removal and installations of mostly asphalt shingles. I've gone through the gamut of various boots and soles over this time. The one that seems to get the most life for me is the Vibram Christy 4014. But even with that, if I can get 6 months out of a sole I am ecstatic. Do you have any other other recommendations for a replaceable sole that could be as soft on the shingles but maybe garner another month or two of wear? I tend to walk a little more bow legged than most people, due to my body and legs adjusting to walking on slopes on daily basis. So, obviously the outside edges and heal tend to wear quicker, but that is unavoidable. I do wear safety toe boots simply to help maintain the shape of the boot itself a little longer.
In the crepe line the christy has the best wear. But what a lot of people have been asking is the christy sole and add a flat Vibram sole like the Sierra over top
Hello, can you tell me anything about the expected durability of the vibram Christy VAP 2306-14??? I suspect that it's quite soft. TY for your time
I may have missed it, but what do you clean the leather with before adding conditioner??
I really love this old trade, I'm just fascinated by boot repair and the steps and products of shinning them and caring for them.
I want a pair of red wings really just so I can rub some lotion on them and buffem out.
Boots are pretty Kilmer looking to boot lol.
Depends on the leather but most of the time we use a mixture we make of vinegar, de-salter and easy cleaner. We tend to use it during the resole process a lot
Cobblers Plus Inc. oh okay. Right on man thank again for your reply and secret info lol.
I watch you and Jason dornstar who I think is your homeboy.
Merry Christmas, and a happy new year.
Could you compare the material used by Vibrams to those made by Crocs? A lot of the success Crocs has had was that it was as good a material for a "shoe liner" as it is as a sole as well.
That is a very interesting one. Might have to test it
@@CobblersPlus
I know you're a busy man... but if you have the time, could you put together a frankenstein shoe that's "soled" by a Crocs sandal? I know that Crocs already has shoes with traditional uppers. But none as good as premium hiking boots or loafers.
I just recently started wearing Crocs, and man they are so comfortable! When I get off each morning at my job, I put them on when I get to my car. Feels good after you’ve been wearing steel toed boots on concrete for 8+ hours.
Between the Middlebury 1757 sole and the Roccia 528K sole, which one would you choose? I would like to customize some Thursday Rugged and Resilient Captain boots. I would like a light, soft, durable, bouncy sole with excellent grip. Thanks for your help!
Which Style Sole is Considered the Most Comfortable?
What is the weight in grams for every model?
How to order this sole in Pakistan
What do you recommend as the closest to the XL Extralight AE uses on the Nomad line?
The 1757 would be closest in style but if you are wanting even softer that may be a tuff sole to match up from Vibram soles
Which sole is best for walking on pavement?
are the commando soles made of polyurathane like Blundstones which crumble if you don't wear them or store them in a humid climate?
Just about all rubber and crepe will do that under certain conditions. However the Vibram definitely don’t seem to do that as easily as others. Just for fun I had purchased some very old soles (I won’t ever use them of course) but just because there discontinued models and they are over 20 years old and still holding up nicely. Might try them some day on my pairs
How do the Long Haul Soles compare to the 430 Mini Lug as far as durability goes?
The Long Haul is a crepe sole so the Vibram 430 will last much longer but the Long Haul is more of a cushioned feel and is thicker
@@CobblersPlus so under similar circumstances would you say I might get twice the wear out of the mini lug?
Can those middle ones the long haul be used on western boots? I’m curious about some softer more comfortable options than leather and standard rubber soles
It can work on some western boot styles but not all. It would be best to take a look at some pictures of the boots at least
Late reply but yes-check out the Brahma Spongy Ropers by Canada West Boots
How would the long haul’s fair on snow?
They’re OK. Slightly more grip than my mini-lugs, a lot more than Christys. But like any Vibram sole they’ll still slip on solid ice so tread carefully. I have these soles on my sh!tkickers and they’re very comfortable.
Hi, I’m wondering what is the closest to Red Wing 212, 213, 214 sole could Vibram Desert Boot Soles #2602 could that be closest to original? Thanks
Yes that would probably be the closest. Most people change it do a different sole completely though
Are the Vibram 4014 rated as non-slip?
There not rates for that but they do have a better grip on roof tops because of the larger surface area
Is it possible to resole a Strobel construction boot??
Yes it can. Just depends on the wear on them
Cobblers Plus Inc. thanks for the reply, with that in mind how far can I let them wear down?
So there IS such thing as a black wedge sole. I swear I always, and I mean 100% of the time see wedge soles being white and I was beginning to think there was a reason they HAD to be white (kind of like car tires MUST be black for UV resistance reasons)
Where did you buy them?
We have multiple suppliers we buy from
How do you like the Vibram Olympia?
I currently have Redwing 415's if you Google them you'll see their boot tread pattern. I was considering either the Olympia or Montagna(standard lug). I work on ladders alot and I work in and outside customer homes. To me, from the photos I prefer the Olympia. I'd just like to hear from a cobblers view.
Definitely one of my top styles from Vibram. I will be getting around to the video on that one soon
I work as a cable tech so I work all over the place (working Fields, customers yards, in homes, attics, crawl spaces). I really liked the performance out of my Redwing 415 soles. The Olympia soles seem to have a similar tread pattern just a little more rugged.
Thanks for any advice!
So between the standard Cristi crape and the 2021 wedge, which one would you say would be more grippy for asphalt shingles, and if neither what sole would you advise?
It's pronounced 'handsome belly'
It’s pronounced “VE-BRAM.”
Wearing out the balls of the foot first? Must be ladders.
Either that or it's one of the weirdos who walk toe to heel (which is technically the way we are all supposed to walk).
@@calebosuna4939 that’s how you’re supposed to walk barefoot. Since modern shoes already have a heel droop (which is actually a measure of the heel elevation, oddly enough) you’d still have even wear if you walk on the balls of your feet.
