I cannot even start to tell you how much benefit I am gaining from watching your videos, you are answering all my questions that previously I could not find answers to. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your an angel.
You are so real, calm and easy. You just meant me when you said "how do they do that", because I'm always overworking my paintings. I find it so beautiful if it's just an impression. Thank you for helping us and making it look less complicated 🤗
Hi Susan! I really enjoy your lessons. Although I follow a different religion but I really appreciate how you see the work of our Creator in nature. I feel that breathes in a special spirit into your artwork. May God bless you always. Lots of love from Pakistan. Anne
Quratulain Mansur ....thank you friend for your kind words. There is One creator.... and we see His handiwork in our beautiful world. May you be blessed!
Hi Susan, thank you for the advice and inspiration in this video! I am just about to try the opposite colour underpainting, excited to see the results :) Have a wonderful Sunday all artists!
This is better than any movie! I made my popcorn and settled in for the show! Thank you for the beautiful tutorial. I learned so much and the music was so relaxing. I loved that bunny on your bulletin board, adorable!
I counted the time today and realized I bought my very first sketch pencil set 5 months ago- not six, so with that in mind, I am very happy with my achievements! I had never had a paint set in my life before April, and that set is a Van Gogh 18, and being passed to my Granddaughter! I now have Leningrad Russian 36 full pans....what an astounding difference!!! LOVE!
Hi Susan! Sorry but I couldn’t find this one on the website so I’ll post my question here. This is a perfect example of how I’ve been frustrated with color theory. Please keep in mind I tend toward analytical (math major). I use the same color wheel as shown in this tutorial. When the wheel shows triad (blue-violet/red-violet/yellow-green) I don’t understand how the addition of yellow and blue fits in? An artist friend told me not to pay too much attention to color theory, but when I thumb-nailed a botanical garden of many beautiful blooming plants, it looked like a child’s coloring book. So I changed some flower colors to achieve analogous, which looked fine but lost the excitement. This tutorial results in a beautiful painting as always. How do I get from child’s coloring book to pleasing color combinations while “bending the rules” of color theory?
That is such a wonderfully stated question, Maryellen. I have some videos that might help, but I could truly create a lesson around your inquiry. This is a video I created awhile back. I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but it might give you some basic color theory info. I'll look for more to share with you as well. ua-cam.com/video/rG7XrCw4c48/v-deo.html
Hello Susan Thank you for your tutorials. Though I have been painting for over 5 decades, I still find joy and satisfaction in learning more. The underlining is wonderful, but, it sure takes courage. I try, but.....still not there yet. I enjoy your instruction skills and your easy going approach. If I'm not mistaken, you reside in Florida. Me too. Maybe some day our paths may cross. Thank you so much Yael
Hi Susan, happy Labor Day weekend! Your teaching skills are quite wonderful and I have learned so much from you. Would mind doing some educational videos on figurative and animal pastel painting? How to do an underpainting for them and how you create fur in pastel. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video!! I enjoyed it very much - so much information and color knowledge!! I am brand new to pastels and am a little hesitant to actually put pastel to paper! Can you suggest a video or two to start off with, please? I do have some pan pastels I'm wanting to try. Thank you again and please continue your excellent lessons!!
dear Susan! thank you! I enjoy your videos all the time! unfortunately I didnt find ghe "paint my photo" app, could you plz help me to find it?! thank you
I couldn’t find the app you referred to, also I use my cell phone screen to view my reference images. It’s too small, I have to hold it and I have to tap it frequently to keep the image on! What are you using to view your reference photos?
I'm using an ipad and i change the settings so that the screen will not cut off after a few minutes. You can do the same thing under settings on your phone typically under "settings" and "display". I do like having the bigger ipad screen though. Hope that helps :) Happy Painting!
Hi Susan, I am really enjoying your tutorials. You are a very good teacher. But, I do have a question about this tutorial. Since the picture is mostly green, you chose opposite on the color wheel for the underpainting. I thought you would then use greens on top but instead you used a lot of blues. How did the blues come to be part of the picture? Thanks
That's a great questions Dawn. Blues and greens are both good colors to use on a complimentary underpainting with oranges, reds and yellows. ;) Typically, you can use opposites on the color wheel (as an underpainting) that are more about cool vs. warm colors than any specific color. :)
Hi Charlie, I use a brand called Krystal Seal, but there are various other brands. You can find some on www.dickblick.com And here is a video I made on safely storing pastel pieces: ua-cam.com/video/HVJmuw6O4vQ/v-deo.html
Susan Do you think the dollar Tree Magic Erasers would blend the top layer? I will look for a pool noodle but I have seen them there, and sort of a similar material. I need them for many things- maybe I should just try it, right?
++I love these beginner lessons! Thanks so much Susan! I am not posting so much to the group because I am downsizing my early(LOL) art supplies and organizing all my newer(LOL) Artist grade things to start a pastel pencil, Watercolor, and freehand drawing course under one roof next month. I finally got a 36 set of pure Artist grade water colors! I have just to buy the Mungyo Gallery Finest mid-soft, when I go into Pastel. I spent many more hours than you could probably imagine, plotting a course that holds true to myself and my journey ;-) I am arting every day, even if only for 30 minutes, but on average 5 hours, and making lots of art- most of it experimental, or exercises. I am doing 3 paintings atm, but I dont think they are well suited to MC, a bit too eclectic I guess. I do share in IM on request. I am in a place where I trust my heart, and God, to carry me through, and I do not need validation, or the lack of it to sway me. Much love to you, and thank you again for all you do. I love being a small part of Monet' Cafe'!
Thank you for your amazing dedication in teaching all of us. I have a question. I have been bed bound for many years and in my life before illness I was a graphite pencil drawer of faces. Now I'm obsessed with pastel, and although I was told I'd never be able to use them in the bed because of the mess and to give up my dream of using pastel, I've persisted, and just starting to make my first paintings. I've found ways around the mess -It's entirely possible! But I don't have any reference photos because I can't go out to take any. Photos. I spend many hours on Pinterest collecting inspiring and amazing photos and finished pastel. But because of copyright I'm told I can't use any of these in the upcoming exhibition which I have and opportunity to enter. Where can I find photos of good quality ... Fast... ? I only have a few weeks to produce something. I'm only a beginner with colour and pastel , but I know I can do it.
shoot4thstars ... what an inspiring comment and an example of a determined spirit! I guess you proved the others wrong in working with pastels in spite of your challenges. I have seen people paint with their teeth or feet simply because they had no arms, so we can do what we purpose to do with perseverance and hopefulness!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻💜 There is a great website where you can get copyright free reference photos it is called Www.pmp-art.com You should consider joining our Facebook group because there are so many artists on that are willing to help and share. We also have a growing album of reference photos that the artists have contributed. There are lots of beginners in the group and I think you would love it. It’s called “Monet café art group“ and you will have to ask to join, but just answer the questions and say that you heard about the group from me personally. Happy painting and thank you so much for sharing your beautiful accomplishment in painting with pastels.
St P - No? Demographics has a colorful way of giving definition. I believe Susan is a trained graphic artist, that does demos for art enthusiasts, as well as other Artist' Color, is a very simple subject, but is widely known as a difficult subject throughout the world. St P .... yes, I get that. But I didn't say I was punching up value… I said I was punching up color ,which basically is a term I use just mean that I enhance color more than the photograph or what is in real life. Thanks so much for your information though! I appreciate your comment.
St P - I actually get that! :) Applying this in music; when going up the scale, some notes are referred to as sharps... Going down the scale, flats, signaling the flow of the Melody. Good point ;)

Really helpful video, thanks! Just wondering what make and where you get your color wheel?
I get lots of my art supplies from either www.dickblick.com or www.jerrysartarama.com .... both should have the color wheel I use :)

Hi Susan, I don't understand which triad colors you use in the actual drawing. What colors go where?
Susan Do you think the dollar Tree Magic Erasers would blend the top layer? I will look for a pool noodle but I have seen them there, and sort of a similar material. I need them for many things- maybe I should just try it, right?
TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV ... I haven't tried magic eraser for blending, but please let me know if that works!
