You’re so right - we all take the same journey together. We have to be ok making a lot of “terrible” art as we improve. The more terrible art you make the less terrible art you make!
YAY!! Thank you! @janetgoodall6372 Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love inspiring others, especially in their art journey! Thank you for your sweet comment!
Thank you for inspiring me. I am finally realizing a new passion of wanting to jput on paper my minds eye. I just started playing with my artistic visions and wathcing you is soon helpful. I love your work!
Glenda Goodsir Yay! I just saw that you joined and I added you to the Facebook group. We have a lot of fun in the Patreon group and I am going to be uploading a new lesson tomorrow morning. Also, I will send you a welcome email tomorrow giving you the general Patreon schedule. So happy to have you as part of the family!
I just love the use of color and variety in your art work. I'd like to work at being more loose in my paintings. anyone can incorporate your lessons using any medium. I love working with oil paints and acrylics myself and you inspire me so thank you for sharing.
Hi Susan I am always drawn in to your work the luminescent colours are just fantastic! With your use of value they still look realistic and believable. Thank you for all your generosity
So cool to see it all come together step by step! I know now that I need more intense darks in the last painting I did. Should I "touch it up" or leave it be! I have a photo so think I'll tackle it with some darks. Thanks Susan!
Linda Kriegel ... it's always hard isn't it? Trying to figure out if we should keep working at our paintings. If you haven't built up too many layers already, it might be nice to add a few more darks. I'd love to see it!
Great video on value. Thank you. This is definitely something I have to keep thinking about when using color. Your black and white photo of the pastel colors is a fantastic tip. Thanks again.
Great instructional video on such an important topic. I learned a great deal. In the future can you explain the use of warm and cool colors in conjunction with value. Also how do you determine what colors to use in your predetermined palette? Love all your videos.
Sorry, meant if you ever grind some pastels and mix with white to get a powder color like mixing paints? I am struggling to keep it from being a big muddy blob. I loved the final painting.
I haven't tried that Syd, but I'm always experimenting! I used to struggle with getting my paintings too muddy and overworked, but the best thing for me has been to just practice, practice, practice. And of course watch many other pastel artists and how they work. Check out our Facebook group if you like... Monet Cafe' Art Group. There are so many artists there all helping each other. :) You have to ask to join, but just answer the questions and say that you heard about the group from me personally. ;)
This is so helpful to me. It teaches so much for the types of compositions I love.I have 2 WIP, but I am stuck in my heart of hearts. I pray it passes soon, as I order 2 BIG boxes of pastels next week. Love to you!
You are exactly right , value , temperature and so on , I am new I find myself overwhelming . What colors to buy , combination of paper and pastels make a huge difference . 👩🎨
Thank you for this video Susan. I lost in which video you gave us a small tutorial on how to use the Paint my Photo website. Would you please let me know which one is it? Thank you. :)
I apologize Susan, I did not find this video, to thank you for the one you gave me with the tutorial on Paint my Photo, which now I understand how it works. Thank you so much :)
Great tutorial! I really appreciated you going over the values and now you picked the pastels. I have to ask, I got some different kinds of pastels and I don't see the light colors in 48 to 72 sets of pastels, are they not used in sets? I was wondering if you ever grid some pastel and mix with white to get a powder color like mixing paints?
Not quite… Here’s the difference: Tone is the degree of intensity or strength of a color. ... Value describes the relative lightness and darkness of colors in a composition. White is the highest value and pure black the lowest.
I found your site just today and am finishing the third demo with you. Have taken lots of notes from your great instruction and plan to put the information to good use! Tell me, please, who the composer of the background piano music is. I've so enjoyed it!
A great lesson Susan, thank you. I’m just starting Pastels as a way to practice loosening up my art (I paint hyper realistic), and this video helped me see the strokes and blending techniques you use to capture the essence of a scene rather than the details. Thanks!
So wonderful. Even though this video is a little older, it has so many great tips. Keep coming back to it.

Susan, there is nobody like you. You are so inspiring and so dedicated. I have learnt so much from you! Thank you for all your videos. ❤🙏

Kathy Sherman nice!!!! Thank you!
Could you please let us know the size of the pieces on your demos?
So sorry I missed this from a few weeks ago. Lately, I've been sharing the sizes of my paintings in my video. Thanks for the useful comment :)

It would be so helpful if we could see the reference photo while you are working.
Are value and tone the same thuni?
Not quite… Here’s the difference:
Tone is the degree of intensity or strength of a color. ... Value describes the relative lightness and darkness of colors in a composition. White is the highest value and pure black the lowest.
J'ai demandé à joindre au groupe Facebook mais vous n'avez pas répondu
