so cool! My dad just caught his first tripletail in Louisiana and now I am all trying to search down all the tripletail videos to learn about them😅. But watch out for their fin spikes and razor gill plates! Dang thing stabbed me twice when I was putting it in the freezer for preservation/mounting and it was already dead!😂
Love the video! A couple of things worth mentioning. When running the boat, it is best done on the opposite side from where the wind is blowing so that you don’t run over crab trap line. Secondly, you may want to work on that trout set with the fly rod as that may help your hook up ratio. I use some light bead chain eyes on my fly for tripletail fishing with a weed guard so that it can come close to the buoy.
Be careful with those gill plates, I like to use a saltwater soaked medium towel to grab most of my fish! Keeps the hand oil off of em and is better on the scales, especially with the trout! And it will save your hands 🙌
Here's a video showing how to tie bucktails that work similar to flies but are heavy enough for conventional tackle to cast: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-tie-a-bucktail-jig/
Yes, I have caught about a dozen tripletail in the 20 to 24 inch from buoys over the last year with 10 lb braid and 20 lb mono leader. I have only had 1 breakoff from what I believe was a tripletail, but I was fishing a channel marker, which is when it's smarter to go with stronger line (20 lb braid and 30 lb leader).
All of the tackle used in this video can be found here:

That's definitely one of my favorite ways to catch fish. Tripletail are lots of fun and tasty too.

@@Saltstrong thank you
That was a great tutorial!
Thanks Ed
With 10-lb braid, and 20-lb leader, is that heavy enough to land a keeper, do many break off?
