Organic 96 was my first electronic music festival. It was in the summer of 1996 and located on the side of a mountain, normally a ski resort in the winter. After an afternoon and night of dancing to amazing artists such as Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Loop Guru, Meat Beat Manifesto, and others, I drifted off lying on a blanket win ext to my then wife, to the sounds of The Orb. The both of us will never forget seeing the sun rise as they performed Little Fluffy Clouds. That event is forever seared in my memory. One of the joyous moments of my life.
One of the greatest tracks ever made. An absolute masterpiece. I have been surprised to find out how many of the core melodic sounds were actually heavily processed guitar (compliments of Steve Hillage of course). This includes the very beginning bubbly sounds and of course the eerie drone that used his glissando rod technique. The Aisha the Creator vocal and the Jah Wobble bassline are the chef kisses to the track. I have not heard anything else remotely like this and it still sounds fresh 30 years later.
A huge fan of electronic music since Tangerine Dream/ Kraftwerk early days and great to see you reacting to this genre Jim, hopefully, lots more in the future. Boards of Canada, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Autechre, Eat Static, Dominik Eulberg, Solar Fields, Orbital and many more worth checking out.
Good choice! One of my favourite ambient albums, some legends worked alongside Alex and Kris (Thrash) on this, Steve Hillage, Jah Wobble (on bass) to name a few. Another album similar to UFOrb is the KLF album Chillout. Jimmy Cauty (KLF) and Alex Paterson founded the Orb back in 1988.
I know Kris Weston was involved at the beginning, not sure what happened between him and Alex but he’s very bitter. I’ve had Chillout on CD for almost 30 years. It’s sublime!
I heard The Orb for the first time on Annie Nightingale's Sunday request show. Little Fluffy Clouds, and not too many Sundays later, A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld. Cheers Annie. Set on a road of discovery, and I've never really left it.
I love The Orb, but only have one album of theirs, Moonbuilding 2703. Beautiful soundscapes, beautifully crafted double album. Very heavy vinyl! I mean that in weight terms. Hehe
Not at all what I expected, but I did like it. I've listened to quite a bit of electronic music over the years, so it wasn't too far afield for me. It did remind me a bit of Orbital, and not just because of the name. 😁
I know them well. This album was my first introduction to their music, long ago, and I like them very much. I love electronic music (not house music). Try the band: Software: Syn Code. Digital dance. Airsculpture Redshift Broekhuis, Keller & Schönwälder: Repelen. Live at Dorfkirche Vanderson Asura: life2. [360]. Carbon based lifeforms Johannes Schmoeling
@@JimNewstead well, I tried them all. Definitely not my kind of music but I can listen to it for a little while. Orbital, musically it’s not very complicated and I just can’t get it that the public reacts if they’ve never heard any better (I looked at a live concert). It irritates me that they don’t play one note themselves. They are only turning knobs. Vanderson makes better electronic music. King Crimson, Gentle Giant; they make complicated music. Leftfield, better than Orbital. But constant loud beat, everything else is on the same loud volume, makes me feel it could have been so much better. Underworld, couldn’t find it between all the game videos.
I might recommend Plastikman - Consumed or Musik for a chillout but might be a little too subtle/slow moving for a UA-cam video, maybe something to check on your own time though, Richie Hawtin is kind of a genius. Synaesthesia - Ephemeral would be a good one for here maybe. Also, should’ve done the full 40 min version of this one…. Keep it going, Jim ✌️
Variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes! I never completely understand people that will only ever listen to one type of music, or more extremely, just one or two bands!
Oh, how lovely! It doesn't remind me of Kraftwerk at all, who I do not particularly care for. But, it neither reminds me of Jarré nor Tangerine Dream. I'm writing this while listening, and yes! I agree. This is more in the vein of Vangelis, in my opinion. My initial reaction was likening it more to Walter/Wendy Carlos, but I can definitely liken to Vangelis as well. In your description of how Orb creates, it sounds very similar to what I understand DJs do live in clubs with two turn tables? Is that basically what you meant? Still only partway through, so you haven't done any after listen discussion yet. I'll see if anything else I want to discuss comes up later.
Very chill Jim. Not necessarily my tastes but listenable. A new album that I totally enjoy as chill out listening is Vienna Circle, Secrets of the Rising Sun.

I agree 100% with everything you've just said here. It is a classic and totally indispensable in my life!
They were recording elephant farts! That's right, elephant farts. That's some heavy shit right there dude.

The version on Live '93 is my favorite, but this was a nice treat :) Thanks for playing this, Jim!
I enjoyed this one 👍
I'm glad!

I am aware of the Orb..... because of my good buddy Jim. I'm definitely a fan now.
HeeHee! Glad you still remember that!
I love The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld... Haven't heard this one before, looking forward to this!
Tremendous, instantly seeking a copy of it to transpose onto my portable player
Isn't it brilliant? Glad you enjoyed it Richard!
pure genius :)

Hey Jim as a fellow drummer I highly recommend the band 'Pound" from Seattle. Drumming like you never heard before. Cheers 🍻
Jim, I'll play this later when I'm chilling out reading a book in my music room.
That’s the time 👍🏼
Cheers, mate!
thx greát upload mate !
Thank you!

Although to be honest, there is some amazing so called progressive house….. Leftfield, Underworld, Orbital…..
@@JimNewstead I’ll check it out.

I remember The Orb, but never really listened to them. Like that you bring a bit of variety to the channel.

@@JimNewstead absolutely, looking forward to your next explorations. Happy to have discovered your channel.
First time listen. Reminds me somehow of a band called House of Suns, especially the landscape-y sounds. You might know them/him, Jim ;)
Well, you kinda have to get your inspirations and influences from somewhere, eh? 😜
Is it possible to love prog rock and ambient coz I do.
It sure is….. I’m living proof of that!

Love The Orb, System 7 are even better. Anything with Steve Hillage on. Have you got any Future Sound of London, all their albums are superb.
I used to keep Lifeforms playing on repeat in my bedroom for days at a time. Would be a good one for Jim to do I think
I’ve got Lifeforms album on CD and a bunch of remixes on vinyl of the track Lifeforms. Also have Accelerator on vinyl.
@@JimNewstead Later Environment albums are brilliant, Fripp is occasionally sampled. In fact I'd say they're better, well worth having a listen.
