The good thing about 4k is that it does come with the blu Ray. So you have the 4k disc for later on if you decide to jump into the format. I’ve been doing this for some movies that I don’t have that are the same price or cheaper than the blu Ray alone.
I personally think that it does really depend on the scope of the films. For example, not every Pixar movie is going to look great on 4K, including with Disney. I don’t think the OG Pixar movies look better, but WALL•E, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles are exceptions (just personal preference), and Soul and Toy Story 4 would be great. Lion King, Princess and the Frog, and Mulan can look fantastic. That being said, I wish there was more movies that can get a 4K release, but it might not happen. For example, Studio Ghibli movies, like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, etc., would look great because they do have breathtaking world building, character and environmental animations that most studios can’t achieve. I also have a spot for The Prince of Egypt since it has amazing hand drawn animation and incredible facial animation. The one I think can get overlooked is stop-motion animated movies, specifically LAIKA Studios (Coraline, ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings). These movies would look absolutely amazing since they were shot on a real camera and have more sharp, colorful high dynamic range. I know that was long, but this is what I think would work best on 4K. It’s upsetting that lesser known studios can’t get 4K releases, let alone Blu-Ray (hopefully soon The Triplets of Belleville). That’s my long take on it.
I have Space Adventure Cobra and Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro on 4K. I think they're both phenomenal, and I think are must owns for anyone who wants to see animation in glorious 4K and HDR.
I got hotel Transylvania in 4K when it came out and yes, definitely amazing color and Very nice texture detail on Drax n friends. Wish they would do the original 2 as well in 4K. I've got the 2D bluray versions. Been thinking about double dipping for the 3D of those.
I myself thinks it's clearly the biggest quality difference between an animated UHD-movie and the Blu-ray version where there is often not big that big of a difference between "real movies". Hell, often you can't see any difference at all between a regular UHD-movie and a plain Blu-ray where you ALWAYS see the difference in animated movies.
Depends, Disney is kind of lazy with their 4K Animated films. Their movies already look amazing on their Blu-ray Signature edition remasters, so 4K/HDR isn't going to add much.
MovieGuy365 Oh thanks for that! I have a 2020 Samsung Q60T 4k TV with a Panasonic Ub420 but I am considering to get an LG C9 OLED Tv and buy a 4k player that supports Dolby Vision. However the only problem is I’m on a low budget. What would you say on my decision? Also if you don’t mind answering do you think animation is better viewed in Dolby Vision or HDR 10+? Appreciate the replies back :)
The LG C9 is an excellent choice for tv. Since the UB420 doesn’t support Dolby Vision, if you can afford to possibly upgrade to the 820. If animation is your main focus for Dolby Vision, I wouldn’t worry about it. Their aren’t too many animated titles on 4K that support DV. If that’s the case, your 420 should be just fine.
MovieGuy365 Thanks for the reply man, really appreciate it. I think I’m going to stick with my Samsung QLED 60 TV until hopefully I get a LG C9 OLED for my birthday (I’m not even sure if a QLED Tv is a true representation of animation, some people say OLED is a better one but QLED has better color, I’m not sure at this point). I might keep the Ub420 or try to change it to an Oppo if I find one.
I got BELLE on UHD today....the picture is far more dim and muted colors than my pirated version. Slightly less pixelated? Yes... but at the cost of how bright and saturated it's supposed to be. I'm furious I spent $50 on it. Though, renting Black Adam on UHD looked great and bright. Not sure what the deal is. I will show friends the movie on the pirate version.

Would love to see some Miyazaki in 4K!
That would be amazing
Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro is on 4k, and it's outstanding! It think it's a must have 4k disc!

Thanks Adam 👍 I haven’t seen any 4K animation yet.. but will be getting all new releases on 4K 🙏

I love part 1, part 2 just felt off to me. I still got both in 3D and it’s a shame no 3D for 3.
I remember seeing lion king and hunchback of Notre dame in cinemas as a kid and I love the new 4K versions Miyazaki movies would be incredible in 4K

Nice video on the topic!
I totally agree there's no difference between 4K and Blu-ray when it comes to DC animated
Because is 2D
Great advice man!

For the most part that seems to be the case, their best efforts are with their newer films.
Hey, what TV and 4k player do you use to watch your animation?
I list my equipment in the vid description.

I would only buy in 4k for new purchases, If I already own it, I don't think most animation is worth a double dip.
This video would've been epic if after the intro he said. "No. No it doesn't. Save your money".
Hopefully disney issues sleeping beauty on 4k for its 60th this year
I hope so!
What about Spiderman into the spider verse?

Lion King 4K isn't a huge upgrade over the blu ray
It’s a slight bump at best, a few HDR highlights but nothing spectacular.
