RIP Karl. Saw them at Glasto early 90s on a beautiful Saturday afternoon - this track stood out for the whole weekend. Condolences to his family and friends
I have gigged this song and even though many people don't know it, it's always well received. If people DO know it they LOVE it and come and thank us for playing a World Party song. One of my fave's
From a great album called "Goodbye Jumbo" This was one of my favorite songs back in the day (1990). Fell in love with this band back around 1986 when I first heard "Ship of Fools"
The voice of any or all generations grew with his music as a young man and still there.Thank you for all the great messages that we all need to know of our world...not many voices like this today too many posers and charlotteans that want to be rich and greedy...were all human through our pain today so the world should wake up.
RIP Karl. From a longtime fan LI NY. I managed to catch WP live 2x: 1990 in NYC The Ritz, and 2014 here on LI at Riverhead Theater. Both fantastic shows. At least I can rest easy I saw WP at both ends of the timeline and in great top form each time!
Sad news. Really. Had a chance to see them in the early 90s opening for 10,000 Maniacs and was so excited to finally see them. Been a fan a long time. A very underrated songwriter and as close to a "Beatles" sound as you can get on certain occasions. RIP.
I saw them on Tuesday! It was excellent, excellent, excellent. About 300 people, all of us around 50 years old, singing along (we knew ALL the words), just so pleased to have them back. If you have a chance, do go.
+Todd Jacobson sorry man this is the interwebs and the rules state that sometimes you have to be a complete ass or you get banned. get on rocking in the fee world.
Ssw this video on MTV in 1990. Bought the album through the mail. I have burned through three CDs and have it downloaded on my phone. What a way to bring in the 90s. I love that first line... and everything else.
And if you listen now You might hear A new sound coming in As an old one disappears See the world in just one grain of sand You better take a closer look Don't let it slip right through your hand Won't you please hear the call The world says Put the message in the box Put the box into the car Drive the car around the world Until you get heard Now is the moment Please understand The road is wide open To the heart of every man A few simple words So a mule could understand You don't want tomorrow If it's just crumbling into the sand Won't you please hear the call She says Put the message in the box Put the box into the car Drive the car around the world Until you get heard Until you get heard The world says Give a little bit Give a little bit of your love to me Cos I'm waiting right here with my open arms She says Give a little bit Give a little bit of your soul to me Cos I'm waiting to behold your many charms Is that love in the air? She says Put the message in the box Put the box into the car Drive the car around the world Until you get heard Until you get heard Until you get heard Until you get heard Until you get heard
I never heard this song 'till tonight. I was shopping around at the Christmas Tree Shoppe for some crap and heard this song over the speakers as part of the musak they play. I didn't end up buying anything, but I loved this song so much I went home and found this video. So thanks for the upload. Funny thing is that I'd have never gone out shopping at night in the dead of Winter, but there was a power outtage and figured I might as well get some crap I needed instead of staying at home in a dark cave! What a song!
I have to admit to not hearing this in years. Gotta say I remembered the chorus in unison with the video. But I missed so much of its message as a kid and I'm happy, nay, very pleased to have this to watch and listen for a while :-)
They were booked for Werchter festival after their release of: Is it like today and the album Bang. I Was at that festival , yep specially for them. Last minute 😞 cancel in 94 or 95. Huge disappointment that day for me and my girlfriend
In the box: A few simple words so a mule could understand. ELO, Lennon, even a "Maggie May" chime appearance in the middle section. I really like this song.
The Earth says Give a Little bit of your love to me Give a little bit of your soulto me I am waiting here with open arms The Cure for all things we need
Wallinger was on the brink of greatest in the mid-90s. These songs were nothing short of brilliant. I wish he could have kept the creative output going. He fused Beatle-ish pop with new wave nostalgia into a unique amalgam. Miss this guy so much; wish he would come back and write some new songs. Rock on Karl!!
Who is here in 2024?
R.I.P Karl wallinger :(
I wrote this comment before he died

Rest in Peace. One of Britain's most underrated songwriters.
RIP Karl Wallinger. World Party was one of my favorites as a teenager and helped developed my love of pop melodies. The songs will live on!
100%
Just came across them as a younger kid. Karl was way too ahead of his time. Born too soon and too late. My favorite song of theirs is Ship of Fools.
I only just found out that he passed away, via this comment 😮 My favourite is the live version of Sweet Soul Dream on Arkaeology 🎶
Good Bye Jumbo was my first CD, although I didn‘t had a CD-player in 1990
34 years later R.I.P. Karl Wallinger
RIP Karl… You made the 1980s much more colorful. Safe journey to you. ❤
RIP Karl. His work with the Waterboys and World Party was a major part of my youth. Gone too soon.

This song and the whole album "goodbye jumbo" is among the best pop albums from the last 50 years...Wonderful songwriting, lyrics and arrangements.
Rest in peace Karl , thank you for the music xxx
I can listen to this 10,000 times and it’s still awesome
Karl Wallinger is a musical genius and one of the greatest songwriters ever -- not just of his generation.
Correct ✌️
Agreed but not a patch on Mike Scott

One of the most intelligent and damn catchy pop tunes from the past 30 years.
along with Ship of Fools
@@fretfix1 And “Is it like today?”.
I hope his songs shine brighter over this year.
Sounds like something Jeff Lynne could have written and recorded.
One of the best natural songwriters ever
"To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour..." ~ William Blake
Karl was also with the waterboys don't forget....one of the greatest bands ever !
The joy of making music with others just shines through on this. One of the great albums of all time.
Complete star. The world will be a lesser place without him. Gutted.
Me too man.
I rarely listen to anything outside of hard rock/metal but I still love this song and have the video on VHS I recorded off MTV as a little kid.
A sad loss today. This is one of my favorites. RIP.

From a great album called "Goodbye Jumbo" This was one of my favorite songs back in the day (1990). Fell in love with this band back around 1986 when I first heard "Ship of Fools"
I bought "Goodbye Jumbo" for "Way Down Now" which knocked my socks off at the time and still does 27 years later. :)
That whole album is fantastic.
Kevin Marshall Indeed !!!
try "This is the Sea" by The Waterboys... he is there in a lot of ways without hearing his voice... ;)
In my car.... 24/7...
We sure need more of this message now and here... Lovely song, happy memories, lots of George Harrison.

One of the greatest song lyrics ever written.
Very Beatles/Lennonesque, but that doesn't detract from how good it is!
Wow. I had forgotten about this song. Karl has mad songwriting skills!

SHIP OF FOOLS: One of the best songs ever written, recorded and given.
Once upon a time I felt like the future was all ahead of me, and this song came out then.
Pure pop perfection! One of my favorite songs ever!
Todd Jacobson agree. never forgot this song. something about it's infectious optimism. worthy of lennon and McCarthy at their best.
+Todd Jacobson sorry man this is the interwebs and the rules state that sometimes you have to be a complete ass or you get banned. get on rocking in the fee world.
Definite echoes of the Beatles here. Beautiful and timeless.

You might hear
A new sound coming in
As an old one disappears
See the world in just one grain of sand
You better take a closer look
Don't let it slip right through your hand
Won't you please hear the call
The world says
Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard
Now is the moment
Please understand
The road is wide open
To the heart of every man
A few simple words
So a mule could understand
You don't want tomorrow
If it's just crumbling into the sand
Won't you please hear the call
She says
Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
The world says
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
Cos I'm waiting right here with my open arms
She says
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your soul to me
Cos I'm waiting to behold your many charms
Is that love in the air?
She says

Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
