    Years ago I kept a blue tang for many many years with a yellow tang. They became incredibly close, sleeping and eating together. Tangs always fight or spar to start but eventually they settle and become companions and shoal.

    Tangs are beautiful fish to look at, but even I know better than to even get one. It's best that I don't even think about it because it damages the coral reefs. Only more experienced fishkeepers should get one, but DON'T but one just because you saw Finding Dory (a very good movie btw). You're gonna kill the poor thing.

    • @MileHighReefers

      Tangs can be difficult. I've owned this fish for 4 years and he's doing great. With any luck he will be with me for many more years.

      I have seen a kid put a blue tang in a small bowl. He poured all the water from the bag into the bowl. He fed it goldfish flakes. The next day, it was dead! Poor fish! He did it because he saw finding dori and got inspired to keep blue tangs!

    • @adamnorvell
      @adamnorvell 8 років тому +13

      +Bob Lui I call BS on this one. As a fish keeper (I'm assuming) or at least fish lover, I don't believe you'd see that and just let it happen. Blue tangs aren't cheap fish stores are very aware of the epidemic of idiots who want a tang because of the movie.

    • @boblui3917
      @boblui3917 8 років тому +1

      +Adam Norvell do you not know about everything that happening because of the movie? Its all over news, youtube, etc! You have no clue....... Yes blue tangs are expensive, but kids and their parents still buy them. You don't have to believe me okay. Think what ever you want. Its your opinion so I don't care. Don't believe me, its fine! I know if its true or not. You don't have to reply and say "I call bs on this one" And yes when finding dori came out, there was a huge increase of mainly children wanting and buying these fish. Its up to the parents to decide. There are kids with lots of experience of fish keeping and there are also kids that aren't that good at keeping fish. What do you think a kid would use as a home for the fish besides a tank? A bowl of course! And you know some times kids pour store water into a tank! Come on think would you? To be honest, I feel like its more common for a kid to use a bowl, pour store water, and convincing their parents to buy a fish!

    • @boblui3917
      @boblui3917 8 років тому +2

      +Adam Norvell Plus you do realize that some kids would lie willing to get something? The pet store owners would ask their parents! You know what if parents just let it slide and also lie. Im not saying all but I am saying that those parents are the ones who usually let their kids buy whatever they want and wont care and would lie about it too! Obviously most employees of the fish store would believe them! For example, there was a time my cousin and I were going to a local fish store. He wanted common plecos. But he already had three mollies in the 5.5 gallon tank. Then when we went to the pet store, he lied and said he had a 55 gallon tank with all the supplies needed for keeping plecos. I stopped him and told the employee that this wasn't true. My cousin was older than me by a lot. Guess who the employee believed. My cousin of course! You see kids can bet away with things. And you know some fish store employees can be tricked, because some times they believe everything!

      I know this is a bit late but you may be able to get a yellowtail damsel instead, they look similar (especially to younger children) but can be kind of aggressive. In my opinion blue tangs aren't that hard and a baby would outgrow a 75 in 3ish years, but I'm sure like me you would struggle parting with the fish when the time comes. I didn't plan on getting one for my tank but he was a rescue along with a few other fish

    • @jesterscorner879
      @jesterscorner879 6 років тому +2

      Buying a fish and simply removing or replacing it isn't recommended because it is never as simple as it sounds. Catching fish is never an exact science and there is no guarantee you can find a new home for your new fish. So you are correct that it would be best to avoid said situation. For people with 75-90 gallon tanks who want a brightly colored Tang, I steer them towards the Yellow Tang. I will be putting one in my 90 gallon in a few weeks.

    My Yellow Tang and Blue Hippo Tang are best buddies. I feed garlic soaked foods once per week along with 20% partial weekly water change has kept them free of ich. Water quality and a varied diet is important. Garlic is a natural remedy to boost immune systems and fish love garlic which surprised me. It stimulates their appetites.

If my tanks healthy and adding stress coat should he never get ich? And if he somehow gets something ive never had before, will he effect the others? If I rip him out at first sight, can I prevent others getting it?

    Finding Nemo = 1000's of unnecessary fish deaths due to the line "All drains lead to the ocean," and the popularity of the fish featured in the film, luckily Nemo was more popular, and clowns happen to be fairly easy to keep & are bred in captivity.
    Finding Dory = 1000's more unnecessary fish deaths due to the popularity of the fish featured in the films, but now Blue Tangs more so than clowns, which are far less robust & more difficult to provide for.

    Hi, I have a 12 gal tank. 3 days ago I was at a LFS and bought a small blue tang (1 1/2 inch). Now doing the research I realized that it was a big mistake. I would like to know how fast do they grow?? How long could I keep it in my tank?? At this point, what can I do after my colossal mistake?? Thank you for your support.

    • @shekinass
      @shekinass 6 років тому

      George Arias just return the tang to the lfs. You wont be able to keep it for long before it gets sick and a 12 gallon is too small the only fish you can put there is a clown goby or firefish.

    great looking fish Scott. I got one of these a couple months ago and it did good during in the QT process. Introduced it into the DT and got a little agression towards it from my flame angel and yellow tang but withing a few days it all worked out. Now it is healthy and a lot fatter than when I first got it lol.

    One major thing I learnt with these fish. They require high oxygenated water And loads of free swimming space.
    I swear there is a link between their slime coat and the oxygen level, relative to their high metabolism. Simply put most reefs are not adequately oxygenated for most tangs, especially blue tangs and therefore their body's stress and cannot defend against a barrage of ick in a enclosed tank.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      +Mitchell Keuhl That is a tuff one blue tangs aren't usually known to pick on clowns. If you have the ability you could try pulling the blue tang out of the tank for a few days and hopefully get rid of some of the territorialism. a reaquscap of the tank could yield the same results. I have 4 clowns in my tank and the tang never messes with them.

    My parents brought a blue tang home as there second salt water fish ever. 24 years ago, she's still alive today, living in a 250 gallon tank with 3 other full grown blue tangs, a sail fin tang, and a harlequin shrimp that frequently picks fights that he nearly gets killed in every time. I understand she's a 1 in a million fish. I'm not at all trying to say that this is a normal thing. She got the face rotting disease that was not mentioned in this video. Along with ick, Blue tangs are very susceptible to a skin bacteria that eats away their face. Frequent feeding of nori should prevent this, but my parents didn't know that 25 years ago and as she aged her face got really bad. They sold her to a friend and fish store owner at the age of 21 and she's gotten better looking ever since. She continues to look better every day. Algae and nori is extremely important to most tangs. Make sure it's included in feeding daily or at least every other day for a better chance at no skin issues.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      That is very impressive that your fish has lived so long. Its very common for elderly tangs to suffer from HLLE like yours did. As you mentioned people did't understand the importance of Nori in the 90s. Thanks for sharing I love hearing stories of fish living a long life in the aquarium.

And you keep a new purchase in here for about a month just to unsure they're in good health. Now a hospital tank needs to be able to be treated with copper and other meds but those will kill live rock and other biologocal filter media. Sorry for my wording but how do you feel about both QT tanks/hospital tanks

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      +Anthony ParenteI use them both the same way. If you use Cupramine you can dose copper with out destroying the biological filtration. I don't use "live rock" in QT because the copper will kill all invertebrates. I do like rocks in the tank because it helps with fish stress. This is still an issue I'm personally working on.

    If you buy the tangs together and put them in together they will have a higher chance to be peaceful towards each other, adding other tangs to a tank with tangs you will see aggressive attitude at first

    Please guide on adding fish order please. Iam setting up a 180gallon tank with minimalist rock structure. Similar to luo's reek tank. Sump is 65 gallon with brick media.. skimmer and refug.
    I want to keep 2 sets of clown fish occerlaris pair and black ice pair. Blonde Naso , powder blue,yellow, regal, one bristletooth(either 2 spot or sqaure tail)(maybe sailfin or not if advise). And six line, red coris and a pair of leopard wrasse. 2 or 3 blue green chromis. A foxface. A schooling banner. I like my wrasse and tangs very much. Please advise the order/method to put tanks. I plan to get small or juvenile if possible. Also please any ultarian fish would be appricated.

    hey,
    I had a fresh water aquarium for several years, now I have decided to switch to saltwater aquarium.
    can you tell me which fish I should be starting with, what kind of lights,filters I should use and what should I feed the fish.
    My tank is small (about 70 gallons) will it be fine or shall I switch to a larger tank ? Also tell me if it is safe to buy these fish from local small dealers or should I buy them from Large scale Breeders?

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      This is probably more then I can answer in a comment. There are so many variables that you need to account for. If your not really on a tight budget I would find a good LFS and have them help you design your seystem. For the most part the local small store will be your best bet they're usually full of knowledgeable hobbyist. Do as much research ahead of time to figure what you need. BRS was a video sires called 52 weeks of reef, if you watch them all you will prety much know what you need to do.

      Compare to oceans where they travels miles per day , even 150 gallon is not enough
      I don't know why people are so much obsessed about tang gallon size. If you really care , just don't buy the wild caught specimens ...leave them in wild . Leave Cooperband Buutterfly, Moorish Idol , Blue Tang , Other Tangs , Angels , Butterflies in wild .
      And Captive breed blue tangs don't grow that big compare to ocean .
      Most probably most of them stay with a max size of 6-8".
      Probably a 6 foot tank is minimum tank size for a wild caught adult full grown ( 1 feet size ) blue tang ,
      But a 3-4 feet tank will be enough for a baby blue tang or captive breed tangs ( those who have born in captivity) , but bigger is better.

    I was wondering do you think the saltwater fish tank hobby is growing or in decline? Ik that the Finding Dory movie will increase it temporary but do you think there is more fish tank owners today than maybe 10 years ago?

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      This is a cool question. I think the hobby is defiantly growing. In the last 10 years nano tanks have come on strong allowing people who ether didn't have the space or move houses a lot to keep a tank. Finding Dory will give a little boost to the hobby but i don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. Every year our understanding of these systems and creatures grows allowing us to keep these systems more effectively. My biggest concern is that we need to work to make this hobby sustainable. The worlds reefs are under pressure and the more we can aquaculture the better.

      Most likely algae control, tangs eat tons of algae everyday (why people feed seaweed or nori in the home aquarium) and Sioux tangs algae will eventually overcome the coral and kill it due to lack of light.

      Like anything sustainable collection has a very limited effect on fish populations and the reef it self. Over harvesting is a real problem and can have negative effects on the reef and fish populations. As a hobby we need to support the countries and companys that sustainability collect the animals for our tanks.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  8 років тому

      Thanks for subing! In a 5' 6" tank you should be able to keep a blue tang and a powder blue tang without any real problems. Once the tank is setup up can start off with some smaller hardy fish and let the tank establish. Once your comfortable taking care of the tank you could absolutely try these fish. The powder blue is a more challenging fish to keep initially, but once there established in an aquarium there pretty hardy. I wouldn't try keeping ether of the fish with out a quarantining them first. They are very susceptible to ich and marine velvet. Happy Reefing.
