Thanks for sharing what you’re learning as you progress . I guess financial constraints govern us all, but the type of work you’re doing these days requires a large power hammer. If in the future you’re able to afford one make sure it’s a good size, bigger is always better with such things. I was once a man with a young family myself, I understand meeting their needs places constraints upon finances. I pray the Lord blesses all you’re doing and provides you with everything you need to succeed. Regards from Down Under.

Great timing on this video, I just got some S7 to make some hatchet drifts for the first time! 👍

Looking at your axe eyes, i think my log splitter/press (horizontal) would do a perfect job making final drift, just using the flat dyes, only spot gets quished all the way, with 4"×5" flat dyes, is the spot directly in line with the ram, about 1 1/2" down the 5" vertical grom the top, the other 3 1/2" below tends to be tapered and thicker after a squoosh. I meed to build a bench version, with another ram, quick disconnects for the pump and engine so i can still use the log splitter.

Great video. Thanks. However, for those of us who cannot afford a press or power hammer and must resort to scrap metals for our projects, could you cover what common scrap metals (RR spikes, mower blades, re-bar, etc.) would be acceptable for forging a decent drift ? As a disabled vet, I find it very therapeutic to pound steel and quite rewarding to actually create something.

Coil or leaf springs (5160) or car / truck axles (4140) from rear wheel drive vehicles. The shafts in old struts or shocks are also good stuff. If you're near a spring shop that works on trucks you'll find 4140 round bar in the shackles that hold leaf springs together and they'll often let you take what you want from their dumpster. Get a good breakfast and you can forge all the drifts you need with a hand hammer. A competent blacksmith can forge them to shape without any grinding.

It's really not necessary for a drift. Save it for slitting chisels and punches.
