THE RANGERS OF PORTUGAL!!! The sad story of OS Belenenses

  • Much like Rangers FC, OS Belenenses were once champions of their country but got demoted to the lowest tier of football.
C.F. Os Belenenses, from the Belem region of Lisbon in Portugal, won the Portuguese football top division in 1946. In recent years, the club split in two. OS Belenenses kept the stadium (Estádio do Restelo), badge & history but lost the squad and place in the Primeira Liga. Belenenses SAD in the Primeira Liga are the lesser supported club.
C.F. Os Belenenses have more fans depsite having to restart in the non leagues and rise their way back to the top of Portuguese football! WHAT A STORY!!!

Sadly there won't be a belenenses derby next season because the portugese league decided to add a new 3rd national division, forcing the campeonato de portugal to become the 4th division and slowing the climb of the real belenenses back to the top division. Also the Belenenses SAD( legally called B SAD because they don't have naming rights) is hated by portuguese fans and is seen more as a company than a club, everyone i know is going to celebrate when they get relegated lol

The Portuguese FA is the one who created the liga 3. The liga Portugal is only responsible for professional football, so first two division and league cup, and fa is responsible for non professional football, so all the lower divisions, Portuguese cup, liga revelação (U23 league) and youth level football

Hey! I'm a Belenenses fan, thanks for your visit mate. Campeonato de Portugal actually corresponds to the 4th tier due to the creation of Liga 3 this season but sooner than later we'll be back to our place in the Primeira Liga. Moreover, Vicente, Matateu and José Manuel Soares are the 3 biggest players in our history! Matateu and Vicente were brothers, Matateu was a forward, nicknamed by the English press in the 1966 World Cup as the "Eight Wonder" and Vicente was a defender, described by Pelé as the best he faced! José Manuel Soares was the first idol in Portuguese football, who unfortunately died with just 23 years old, accidentally poisoned by his mother. Great video!

The statues outside the stadium were from Vicente Lucas, Matateu and José Manuel Soares "Pepe" they were some of the best football players to ever play for Belenenses and the Portuguese National Team. Unfortunately the club doesn't care that much and they don't even try to promote the historic presence that Belenenses has in the Belém/Ajuda zone, but there are many points of interest in that area related to Belenenses. Some examples are the bench where the club was founded located in the Afonso de Albuquerque Garden next to the Belém Palace and Campo das Salésias, located in the middle of Ajuda and where Belenenses played until 1956, when the club was forced to go to Estádio do Restelo.
I am a Belenenses supporter and I thank you for your visit and for the video.

Just one more trivia about Pepe, the player in the statue next to Matateu and Vicente (who were brothers). Pepe died young and everytime FC Porto plays at Restelo, right before kickoff, the team steps outside the pitch and goes to the statue to pay tribute to Pepe leaving a crown of flowers. I watched this happen a few times.

Love this - my son lived in Lisbon for a year as part of his degree. We're season ticket holders at Southend United and so instead of watching Benfica or Sporting, he adopted the unfashionable team that plays in blue! He took me over to see the stadium when I was over for a visit. I guess this is a bit of an MK Dons/AFC Wimbledon situation. Hope the original Belenenses club rises again as I have a real soft spot for them!

    • @joaodiniz7207
      @joaodiniz7207 Рік тому +1

i would say its more like that than a rangers situation. this is more wimbledon related, i did follow the two stories closely. the difference was that the owner did no go with the football team further away, but the club expelled the team from this stadium (due to a lot of stuff the company who owned the team did not comply on their contract) and the football team started to play in our national one (renting it) - which is around 10 km from this stadium. Belenenses the club refunded and their biggest luck was that this stadium was theirs and not from the company who owned the football team. they had the infraestructure and all the young squads.

Thank you Sam, I'm really enjoying the Portugal visits. I lived just outside Lisbon from 1986 to 1989. I went to watch Belenenses a few times and they were definitely Lisbon's 3rd team in those days although supporters of Estrella Amadora might argue. When I first went to Lisbon, Belenenses had a British manager - Jimmy Melia - who had previously coached Brighton to an FA Cup Final. When I left, John Mortimore, another Englishman, was the manager. He had previously managed Benfica during which time I got to know him a little. He lived near me and used to bump into one another in a pub in Cascais.
One last thing. The group I worked for had an annual football match at the Estadio National so I got to play there 3 times. It wasn't huge but great to play in a proper stadium with 'history'. Unfortunately I can't remember who we played against in that fixture but I guess it will have been a local amateur side.
    Great days.
Keep up the good work. I love watching your Vlogs whether they are from Annan or Alvalade, Perth or Porto.

    Great stuff man!
CF Os Belenenses is such an historical club in Portugal, some people call them the "fourth" bigger club, because they were really next to Benfica, Sporting and Porto in the 40s and 50s. The first time they got relegated was back in 1982 and just for a season so you can see how historical they are. Sad to see what happened to them.
This stadium brings me memories of old sunday afternoon first division matches with 30.000 people or more in the stands. Such an old school stadium.

I'm an American who grew up in Portugal and I can tell you that there is so much rich football history throughout the country so I thank you so much for putting it on display. If there is a day that you have the time to keep exploring Portuguese football, I would HIGHLY recommend going up north, beyond Porto, and visit the football stadium in Braga. From an architectural standpoint it is one of the most unique football stadiums in the country and Europe because of where the structure is built. If you really want to dig into Portuguese football I would also suggest taking a visit to Boa Vista.

My godfather - originally from Braga- was a season ticket holder (sócio) at Beleneses for decades. In the late 80's and early 90's I remember going with him to many games. Mladenov, José António, Chiquinho Conde were some of their best players then. Great memories! I remember my father staying on the visitors stand (the ones with a great view over them) when Benfica came to play at Restelo. I'm a Benfica fan even before I was born, but Beleneses (o Belém) is in my heart. I always wanted a draw between Benfica and Beleneses, as I didn't want my godfather to be sad about them losing. The same man who smoked 2 packs of cigarettes at Goodison Park in 1966 before Eusebio came on to do what he did best. My godfather used to say that Everton was his 'English club'! Great video. Made me a bit nostalgic to be honest!

Brooo!! Thanks for sharing the story of my club!! Actually all of this process brought the fans together even more and the support is even bigger than when we were in the first league! Also, in game day, we probably have more fans in the stands than most of the clubs in the first and second division.
Hey, here's another cool fact about us: If we win the title this season (4th league) and if we win it next season (as some people have told you, the new 3rd league) we will be the only club in Portugal that won every single league competition. Since we already have the Premier one and a few of Second League titles, and also won the divisions below.
Oh and you made a mistake and it wasn't football related. You threw the metal can in the green container and it is only for glass 😂😂 Metal and plastic are meant to go in the yellow one!!! HAHAHA! You'll know it next time when you hopefully come back to see our team in action!!!

Fun fact: Legally the SAD team aren’t allowed to use the Belenenses name.
Os Belenenses are one of Portugal’s finest club’s in comparison to the SAD who are one of the most hated clubs in Portugal and everyone can’t wait to see them relegated.
But sadly there would be no Belém derby next season. Should Os Belenenses get promoted they will go into Liga 3, whereas if the SAD get relegated they go down to the Segunda Liga - which is the league above Liga 3. So we may never see that gane unfortunately.
The Campeonato used to be the 3rd tier, however there were changes made to the football pyramid in Portugal and when Liga 3 was introduced the Campeonato then became the 4th tier.

fun fact, both os Belenenses and Sport Salgueiros (which you covered on a different video) are playing the Campeonato de Portugal play-offs (equivalent to the fourth tier) and are currently well placed to play in the Liga 3 (third league) next year, and with B SAD looking like going relegated from the Liga bwin, we could have the fake and the original Belenenses teams only separated by one division...

Did you know Belenenses is also Portuguese rugby national champion? Did you know Mourinho played for its amateur team whilst his father was goalkeeper coach? Did you know Belenenses was the team invited by Real Madrid to the inauguration of Santiago Bernabeu?

Fun Fact!! Belenenses is known nowadays for having one of the best portuguese rugby teams, if not the best rugby team in the last 3 years. We have 7 national championships, 5 portuguese cups (taças de portugal) and 5 national super cups. This year we are in the 1st position of the regular phase of the portuguese championship and therefore qualified for the semi-final of the championship as well as in the semi-final of the "Taça de Portugal". Hey man, love your videos!!! Now let me just explain something. From 21/22 till 37/38 the National champion was decided in a a knockout format(equal to the cup), we had no national league, just regional leagues. During this time Belenenses was national champion 3 times. The national league started in 34/35 but the 1st 4 editions where like a test run, only in 38/39 it's champion was considered the true National champion. So since (in 38/39) the cup competition lost its status as the most important competition it was renamed Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal) in which Belenenses was the winner 3 times. So Belenenses even tho he only won one league he is actually a 4 times national champion (1 time via the league and 3 times via the extinct campeonato that was in a cup format) and 3 times cup champion. I hope this explains things a bit.

@@juliuscaesar8163 I only have one team, my local one. My family is Benfica tho so I end up supporting them too. What happened between 34/35 and 38/39 doesn't really affect Belenenses so what I said stands. About Sporting, the thing is they are kinda right, the change to declare the league champion as national champion officially only happened in 38 when the competitions changed names. The federation, in it's right, upped the value of the 1st 4 editions (and that's fair, if we look at them, despite the "experimental" they are fairly legit) but it doesn't take away the value of the campeonato competition till 38. Long story short, the intention was to have the league champion has national champion from day one but it only became official before the 5th season. So I say, count as you like, it's not really wrong in any way

This kind of club split happened in many instances in Eastern Europe, more so with the former state-funded clubs that have been become private after the fall of communism. From what I know, in Bulgaria this happened to CSKA Sofia, in Romania to Steaua Bucharest (now FCSB + a new club Steaua, plus many more in Romania) and in other places as well.

Hi, I'm from Os Belenenses, and those statues are from 3 players. The big one is from "Pepe" (José Manuel Soares), a very good player who played in Belenenses a few years but was poisoned and died, so Belenenses did that statue in the old stadium "Campo das Salésias" in Ajuda and when Estádio do Restelo was build they trasfer the statue to the new stadium. The other two statues, Matateu and Vicente, they played for Belenenses in the 50's and they're the biggest players from Belenenses. They're brothers, Matateu already died unfortunately, but Vicente is still alive and sometimes he goes to the stadium. Pele once said that the hardest defender he played was Vicente when Brasil played against Portugal in 56. I hope to see you soon in the stadium, because we have a big support and we're very proud about our journey, starting from the bottom to the top! Thank you for you video. Cheers mate!

Once you come to the North of Portugal, you should take a look at CD Aves. Similar story to Belenenses, but instead of being one of the Portuguese Champions, we are one of the few clubs that won the Taça de Portugal without being based on a city.
Started last year from the bottom after winning the Cup in 17/18, in the equivalent of the 8th Portuguese Football Tier.
