your kids are very lucky to have you and your husband so supportive. My parents at 18 were like, "ok, you're on your own now". LOL I like the apartment for Jake. Very streamlined and not cluttered at all. I can't believe he is in graduate school now. Time has gone by fast.
My niece moved into her first college apartment ... One thing I ordered her that was inexpensive was a Pyrex baking set from Walmart. She said they have really come in handy to bake & store food. I also ordered her a college cookbook - simple healthy 5 ingredients or less meals, scent warmer ... Little extras that they may not think of but make a difference. It's easy to order and ship ... Nice surprise. My mom ordered her a rice cooker, extra sheet set and extra towels from Macy's - that was easy too!
Perfect list Marnie! I would add rags (old towels from Goodwill are a dollar then cut it up) and over the door hooks. If they have a freezer, ice cube trays. You look amazing, by the way! Sounds like the boys are doing great!
Marnie, this video is so helpful! I'm going to use all of your links! I used your ideas for my 1st son's college dorm room and you always make awesome recommendations! ☺
My 26 year old son just moved out to his 1st house and my 24 year old moved back in. The Ikea storage bags are a must! Also even though I bought the oldest all his furniture, the one thing he says he has found invaluable was a tool kit and an electric screwdriver I got him. A lot of his furniture needed some assembly. Your tips are all great!
This was super helpful, thanks! My daughter won't be on campus this fall but hopefully by the the spring she'll be able to go back. I guess this will give me time to collect all these things!!
I haven’t used a toaster oven in years so it might serve the same purpose, but I recommend an air fryer. Mine was a gift a couple years ago and I’m still surprised at how much consistent use I get out of it. Congrats on the boys doing so well, Marnie!
Jake’s apartment looks great. I wish him the best of luck starting law school. These essential videos (dorm and apartment) are my favorite videos from you, hands down!! I always take away such good tips!!!
First year of college was required by the College to stay in the dorms ,I bought my son a George foreman, a Dorm size refrigerator with freezer and bought him Omaha steaks their individually wrapped he loved it he didn’t like eating in the school cafeteria. Second year he moved into a town house off campus but owned by the school where he lived the remaining years of college with a room mate. I put together in a binder with his favorite meals on recipe cards .One of his favorite dish is tuna casserole he had a friend over made the tuna casserole and then after that it became every Tuesday night they would have tuna casserole and whoever was coming would bring a side dish. Thank goodness for dollar tree and Walmart to stay on a budget for dishes,Towels, pots and pans, blankets, sheet, etc...
My son heads to UChicago as a freshman in September, if all goes according to plan. I re-watched all your videos of getting your sons ready for college move-ins, and they're very helpful, so thank you. The empty nest one was terrific too. Hands down one of your best though is the one you and Michael did about the criteria your family used in considering schools. I hadn't seen that one prior to the college application process, but we came to many of the same conclusions. It's invaluable advice, and I think it would be a great service to your audience if you did an updated video so more folks can find the info. Thanks again for everything.
This is funny because I was going to say for feng shui he shouldn’t have his back to the room/door for concentration and success! He could turn it to face the center of the room and then have the wall behind him which is also good for Zoom calls! 💕
Such an awesome video! I got so much tips from you when my daughter went to university for the first time in 2018. Now my son is joining her and I have to say you and Michael are such great parents. I really hope that the boys will not take all these things that you are doing it for them for granted. I did not see much gratification from my kids when we were buying small condo near their school. Ugh.. It is sooooo different than when we were going go school. I packed my sad little bags a night before I went to school all by myself. The boys are so blessed to have such great parents like you and Michael!! xoxo from Toronto
Marnie this video was a perfect wake up call to me because we just found out that my daughter will be going back to college in a one bedroom with a bathroom and kitchen apartment instead of being with her 4 other roommates as planned before Covid. There’s many things I overlooked that I realize now I need to purchase for her. Thank you ! Always enjoy your videos!
Great list!!! I put together a first aid/over the counter medicine box for my college bound boys. If they felt sick in the evening, after campus health had closed, they didn't have to find a ride to walgreens etc. Had Tylonal, thermometer, cough med, Bandaids, alcohol, cotton balls, Tums.....pretty much duplicated everything from home.
When I went to college my mom worked at Williams Sonoma and let’s just say my first on campus apartment was insanely stocked. People often asked to borrow my mixing bowls and hand mixer~bc people love making brownies and cakes. The snow cone maker was used a lot for parties and same with the blender 😂😂 however those last two I cannot say are essentials!
Hi Marnie, This video will be helpful to so many young people who are moving. If you are just starting out on your own, and moving anytime soon this is a video you need to watch more than once because it is so full of great tips. You truly have thought of everything. Jake's apartment looks beautiful. Best wishes to him as he starts this new phase in his life. xoxo, Karen
While watching this video I just got confirmation that my daughter is transferring colleges and moving across the country to LA. She is an athlete so they don't get much time at home, not even in the summer. The pandemic actually gave me time with her I wasn't supposed to have, but that is going to make dropping her off so far from home hard again. Although she was far away for her freshman year, she was at least still on the same coast and I could drive it. Super excited for her, but the logistics of a cross country move are going to take a new skill set.
We’re 12 hours away-it makes moving them in and out a little trickier for sure, especially if you have to fly. Congrats to your daughter on a great athletic opportunity!
Those Swiss back packs truly last forever. My son has had only 2 which he used all through high school and college!!! They hold up better than any we’ve ever found😊 another great video !!! Thanks for sharing❤️
Does his apartment come with a washer/dryer? You have done a wonderful job with both of your boys I’ve watched since they were little and I feel so proud of them😘 you have the majority of their needs covered with all the “basics”😂 towels potholders foil sandwich bags laundry detergent softener dry towels so many items it is hard not to forget something so the gift card is a great idea! Such a great video!! Loved the tour it is a very nice first apartment I’m certain he will enjoy it!😘
I love this video so much! My son is heading to uni later this year and this is so useful! Thank you so much for sharing!!! What made me laugh is that Jake's backpack made it through college, and my husband somehow managed to break one exactly like that in less than one year! I'll mention this video to him :)
Awesome resources and moving checklist! We used the IKEA totes & duffles for my sons last move, those are a lifesaver. Throw in a couple of gas cards and call it done! Great job.
While I have 5 “boys” (oldest 29, youngest 24) and have been through this process, I think this is the best video for first timers. I’m sure it’ll be a most watched video! The only thing I can think of that you missed is an iron, ironing board and if you have my boys, a steamer (boys are lazy with clothes sometimes 😂). I also bought a lot of refrigerator magnets for a couple of them, which I used to put a list of where things are. Every boy mom knows that she is going to get many many calls asking “mom...where’s the ...). You look lovely Marnie, your efforts have paid off, you were always a cutie patootie, but wow...you look amazing!
I can tell you they both hope to at least finish law school, although each has a different plan for what to do after that. The key factors for Jake were: he wanted to stay in the South, he wanted a school with great school spirit and athletics, but he didn't want a HUGE school with tens of thousands of students. Ole Miss fit that for him, as well as their generous merit based scholarships for out of state students which brought down the cost of attendance to be the same as in-state tuition for us (or even less). Shane was looking for similar things and already knew how wonderful Ole Miss is so the choice was easy for him. Their undergraduate majors are different because they have different interests/talents. I will say both changed their major several times. Did you have a specific question about that?
So well thought out Marnie! Enjoying this- it’s actually a list of what to keep when downsizing too. Dh & I moved into an apartment 11 years ago as my health was getting worse and IKEA stuff was sized right plus it’s held up.
Having recently moved our youngest to Madison, WI, to start his first “real” job, I agree this is great information. I need to check out those photo panels. And who knew I’d be so enamored by a plunger??
How did Jake get to grad school already? Seems like yesterday you were sending him off to undergrad for the first time! The time goes by so quick. My kids are both grown but I remember so well these exciting times.
Thanks so much for the great tips! Especially the fire extinguisher. We are moving our son into his first apartment and this was very helpful💙💙💙 One tip from me - a FLY SWATER!!!!!
I know we only met once and you have friends in Houston but I live right outside houston in Katy and work in Houston so if you would need anything feel free to write and I’ll send my cell. Fun to watch.
Super nice! I will place a little trash can in his bathroom. It’s so wonderful to have great parents to give you a big push to be successful in life. Amazing!

Excellent video! I used many suggestions from your previous dorm essentials video and they were invaluable. Thank you!!
I had a fabric lawn chair in my dorm room 20 years ago. Love it!
I’m sure they know this, but....
your kids are so blessed to have you, AND your organizational skills!!
Great tips! Thank you!
Maybe add a decent pair of kitchen scissors! Yes, you can cut pizza with them, but also salad, other food and packaging. Great video!

A printer!!! I knew I was forgetting something! Thank you so much for this- I find these so helpful!
😂 so hard at u teaching Shane to use a can opener. Just did the same with my 19 year old,
Amy Vicknair Same🙋♀️🙋♀️ My girls are fifteen and I just taught them the same thing less than 1 week ago !

Congratulations to your son! You must be very proud!!
Such a great video. Congratulations to both your boys for starting this new school year. Jake’s apartment is so nice and homey.
Would he consider moving his desk in front of the windows? Might give him a nicer view while he works
It’s better to not be distracted while he studies (that’s the input I was given).
This is funny because I was going to say for feng shui he shouldn’t have his back to the room/door for concentration and success! He could turn it to face the center of the room and then have the wall behind him which is also good for Zoom calls! 💕

Oh, he has that too. It’s in my dorm essentials video!
Love the new setting! can I order the cushions behind you? Love your "mom" episodes cuz I have college age son too and find it so helpful!
The pillows were from HomeGoods-they’re a few years old now.
When I went to college my mom worked at Williams Sonoma and let’s just say my first on campus apartment was insanely stocked. My boys are 13 & 9 so I’ve got a few years to prepare, but just wanted to say this was a wonderful video! Excellent tips!
Just sent this to my little sister who is a senior at UNC and she just moved into her first house with her roommates! :)

Yes!!! The steamer!! I guess I forgot it because I’ve talked about it so much in other videos.
Marnie Goldberg You remembered WAY more than I did with kiddo 1. I hope your boys appreciate you!
I wouldn’t mind switching to that apartment. NY, NJ apartments that people actually can afford suck!
There are definite benefits to living in Texas. 😉
Marnie would you be willing to share how your sons chose schools to attend and what to major in? Career plans etc.?

Thank you Vickie!! That’s so sweet of you!
My daughter uses her magic bullet daily to make smoothies:)
I’m not moving nor do I have a child moving (13 and 11 lol) but I found this so interesting to watch!!!! Great tips!
I need a grill pan. Do you have a recommendation?
I’m trying to find a good ceramic one-still looking!
@@MsGoldgirl Please post update here when you find one! I'll check back. Love your videos!
Do you still have your other Westie?
Of course
which lap top is it
It’s listed in the description box-I honestly couldn’t tell you the model number off the top of my head.
@@MsGoldgirl i couldn't find it so i asked. i found the backpack, but not the computer. do you remember where you bought it?
Super nice! I will place a little trash can in his bathroom. It’s so wonderful to have great parents to give you a big push to be successful in life. Amazing!
I love the comment you made about it not being a “grown up” apartment bc you are still paying for it! Lol 😂
The etsy map print link doesn't work
