Crafted terrain for D&D doesn't have to just gather dust on your bookshelf - let it rock the nights on your desk, warming the soul while waiting for another adventure session.
----------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first episode in the series dedicated to crafting modular 🌲 forest terrain, story-rich scatter elements full of mystery and nature scenery that will keep gathering your friends around the campfire.
In this episode I give a detailed overview on:
• finding the right approach to building stand-alone modular terrain;
• choosing the simple and easy-to-find materials for crafting;
• building up the ground from the cardboard level to the beautiful deep-forest scenery look.
The techniques shown in this episode could be applied in crafting of a wide arrange of amazing atmospheric terrain pieces - hills, meadows, ground for the whole groves for dioramas and tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons - or for any world with 28 mm scale miniatures to which you would like to bring a little bit of life, built by your own hands.

For a long time I cherished the idea of making narrative, story-driven intros, and this time I finally went and did it!
Even with my incredibly bad voice acting 😋, I think it came out quite atmospheric. How do you like it?
Bad voice acting? You are amazing really captured my attention
@@timothybeebe6382 Well, that kind of appreciation really makes me feel it's not so bad 😄
Thank you for the kind words, you amazing sir 🤘 I'm truly happy to know you're enjoying my work!
Got me subbed. Dope
@@hazemangames And you are awesome! 🤘 Thank you for staying tuned, that is probably the greatest appreciation of my work!
@@GerialdsForge looking forward to more inspiration!!
Very nice build, mister Russian Matt Mercer :D
Haha 😄 Appreciate the compliment, but I definitely pale in comparison to the contribution Matthew have made to the tabletop community in the whole world! 🎲 But I'm truly happy to know you've enjoyed this project, my friend, cheers! 🙌
I wanted to say the same! 😆
Hahaha I had to make a double take lol.
@@DariaKoroleva-h4m Now I just need to bring 6-8 other people with me to sit at the tables nearby, so we can all... craft together! 😄
@@HouseDM I've been wearing long hair for a long time, but the beard is just a coincidence, I swear! 😄
I really appreciate your intro very cool ☺️
Hey, it's awesome to see you here! 😀 Thank you for the kind words, I worked for quite a while on the intro, but such appreciation makes it all worth it in the end 😁
came for the tutorial, stay for your voice.
pretty noice, kep it up!
I expected people to be interested in my tutorial videos, but never in my voice, haha! 😄
Thank you for such kind words, I'm truly happy you've enjoyed my work! 😀
Glad to see I'm not the only one 🤣
@@nineblackgoats Thanks so much! Whether it's the build or the voice 😄, I'm happy to know you've enjoyed it!
@@GerialdsForge Oh, I definitely did enjoy both! 🤣
@@nineblackgoats And that's the greatest appreciation of my work I could ever expect 😊
Hello Geriald! Great video and craft! subbed!
Hey there! Thank you so much for the kind words, it's so good to see you here! 😀
Yes the intro was so good, I went back and watched all your videos again and I rang the bell.
Great work. Great voice over during overview. Subscribed and following.
Thank you for such kind words and for staying tuned! 😀 Makes me really happy to know you're enjoying my work!
Dude, your work is amazing!
Hey, thank you so much! 😀 This project is the work of heart (and a bit test of hand), and it makes me feel great to know you've enjoyed it 🙌
"Let's play some D&D, i got some new terrain"
"Sure, let's go. why do i suddenly want some tea?"
[While pouring the herbal brew into the cups]
"How are the Realms lately? I heard there's trouble brewing on the north of Sword Coast... by the way, would you like a Nutella sandwich?" 😁
I use dried herbs for ground cover as well: parsley for wild grass, basil and oregano below trees for leaf litter. I keep my stones and trees separate for modularity.
That's awesome! Who would know that spices & herbs are going to be so much useful in this hobby 🥩
Here in this project I've decided to make most of the elements not separate, but to balance on the line between a diorama and a piece of scatter terrain. But I totally see the goodness of modularity - I usually make little pieces of scenery separate too, like crates or the skeleton adventurer / broken cart that can be seen here 😄
That was fun to watch and some great looking terrain to boot! Instant sub from me 👍
Thank you for staying tuned! 🤘 I'm happy to know you've enjoyed the build & the video 😀 More to come!
Matt Mercer RPing as russian lol
"Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Critical Forge.. erm, wait a second." 😄
What’s up Geriald! Love the voiceover story and your terrain is so dope!
Hey there! 🤘 I wasn't sure how well people are going to take these kinds of intros - so thank you so much for the kind words! It makes me truly happy to know you've enjoyed it - and also makes all that time spent on video production worth it, completely 😄 Cheers!
Keep it up .. love it .. voice over great with the overview ..
@@GerialdsForge Truly it is good. It is like a missing part. The terrain is great but the story gives it some gravitas. Looking forward to future creations.
@@shawnmulberry774 Thank you so much, Shawn! 🤘 For someone like me who've always had some degree of a stage fright, it truly makes a difference. I'm happy to know you loved it! I've got the next episodes in the works, and second chapter should come out soon 🌲
Very well done
Thank you, Christopher! I'm happy to know you've enjoyed it 😀
Great video . The tutorial looks effective . Congrats from a new subscriber .
Thank you very much! 🔥 I'm glad you found my work useful and hopefully pulled an idea or two from it. Happy to see you here! 🙂
Using tea & dried spices is a really novel way to do cheap ground cover! Very cool tip, thanks!
You are very much welcome! 👍 Those indeed are great sources of materials that give a wonderful result, comparable (if not better, in some cases) to the professionally manufactured ones. In the end, I think the best part of it all is that you have a lot to choose from!
Great job! Thank you for sharing :D
Thank you so much, Tina! 😀 The pleasure to share my work is truly mine, as the amount of positivity and inspiration I get from the community is just incredible. Cheers! 🖖
Can't wait to see the next one! My kids really enjoyed the Nutella bit ;). Also, your voice-overs are great!
Thanks so much for the kind words, Brandon! And I'm really happy to hear that sandwiches part got appreciated 😄 I've been waiting for the feedback on it from someone!
That Nutella 🍞🌰 part was shot during the very last days of video post-production. The final result is actually a 4th take of that scene, while there were four sandwiches at the beginning 😅 I had to bite each only once and gave the rest to my girlfriend who's been assisting me behind the camera that day.
You give some strong Bard's Craft vibes! Good videos
Thank you for the kind words my friend! 😀 Indeed, Bard's Craft had always been an awesome source of creativity and inspiration. And I'm truly happy you've enjoyed my work 🖖
Really cool intro and I love those three terrain pieces!
Thank you! Every part of this project & video episodes took a lot of effort, and I'm happy to know you loved my work! 🙂
Thank you so much! I'm happy you liked it 😀
Chocolate terrain is the future of wargaming 😂! Awesome vids buddy can't wait to see more scenery content 👍
Haha, yum! 🍫 Those poor miniatures, they'll have to take a bath after every session... 😄
Thank you so much! I'm happy to know you're enjoying my work 🙌
Great crafting, incredible video! I really enjoyed it from beginning to end, thanks :)
And that's the most heart-warming appreciation of one's work 😀 I'm truly glad you've enjoyed it all, such positivity makes all the time & effort spent on video production worth it by a mile! 🖖
You have an amazing voice! I feel like you could also be a perfect Strahd :3 also thank you for the video! I love seeing how people tackle terrain in different ways
with a voice like you should be working on movie trailers or a voice actor...... good stuff on the terrain , new subscribers here.....keep it up
You humble me, my friend 😊 This kind of positivity and appreciation is truly inspiring to keep up these projects.
I'm happy you liked it, thank you so much! 🖖
Looks fantastic man! Just discovered your channel. Liked and subscribed. Great pieces you are building here 👍
Thank you so much! 😀 This kind of positivity makes all that work worth it by a mile - and I'm truly glad to know you've enjoyed it and keep staying tuned. Cheers! 🖖
The story is awesome, narration is awesome, this is one of the channels that inspired me to throw my hat in the ring and do something similar!
You do such beautiful work. Really enjoyed this. The intro was great. Now, I'm super curious what the first guy was carrying, and if the ranger will live to tell anybody
Happy to know you've enjoyed it, Cross! 🤘 I appreciate the kind words! And eager to continue making story-driven intros like this, so we'll surely find out what happens next 😁
Esta excelente!!
Muchas gracias, amigo! 😀 I'm truly happy you loved my work! It makes all the effort to make these videos really worth it 🖖
Intro is so good, I went back and watched it again and again!
Thank you, dear 😊 I hoped this kind of intro would gain a kind feedback, and I'm happy it did - so I'm in the process of making more!
Great video and wonderful scatter pieces! A thought: if mod podge (which is PVA glue with added water) doesn't warp the cardboard I don't think hot glue was actually necessary to glue down the initial boulders.
Thank you so much! 😀 I didn't even think to use Mod Podge as adhesive, because the whole bottle that I have is already mixed with black paint, to be used as primer for terrain 🙃
I realize it doesn't fully negate it's gluing capabilities, it's just I didn't want to wait too long for any glue to dry before I could start making the ground texture. Was too afraid that rocks would be sliding around... But I'll definitely give it a try on some other build! 👍
@@GerialdsForge I made some scatter yesterday and ended up just using hot glue as well. It is just so fast and convenient and mod podge takes forever.
@@antieverything1 👍 That's surely a way to go, if speed is a concern. No time to waste on drying!
..though no matter how much I try, personally I always end up being too slow anyway 😄
Thank the algorithm for this vid! Outstanding artistic and easy to follow methods! Subbed!😊
this is the first videos of yours I have seen. good intro, my personal taste is shorter intros though. I found the music a bit loud and distracting. Good content all around. Keep up the vids!
Thank you for the feedback! 🤘 I usually end up with long intros, since I've got a lot of video material and every time I've got an intention to show all of it (and quite much is still left behind). As for the music during the intro, I did experiment with volume levels a bit to give it more expression, so it's indeed a bit louder than usual. In the rest of the video the volume levels are normal, however 🙂
what an absolute legend you are.. from south africa 🇿🇦 much ❤ for your videos my friend. you are a brave man. i really hope you read this.
You are too kind, my friend 😊 Thank you so much, I'm glad that you enjoyed my work - and it truly means a lot! Cheers! 🖖
Great job on this project 👍
Вау
I'm curious to see how you set up for games with the irregular bases like this.
You and me both 😄 I haven't had a chance to use them yet. My thought is to set some sort of soft and even base layer (battle mat, for the very least) and have these terrain pieces laid out as the points of interest and encounters happening during the game. Hopefully will find out how it works out soon enough 🙃
Rally great video! Useful tips, and also funny. Nice voice too
Thank you so much! Usually funny isn't something I'm very good at, but I'm truly glad to know you've enjoyed my work 😀
Looks cool.
So good dude!
Most impessive, mate! You just got a new subscriber. Looking forward to seeing more of yiur awesome work!
Thank you for such kind and supportive words 😊 I couldn't be happier knowing you've enjoyed my work!
@@GerialdsForge I am pleased to hear you're still around and haven't abandoned you channel. Looking forward to more stuff from you! It is definitely worth the wait!
@@tacticaldroid7074 And it's truly great to know there's still new people that find my channel and these videos 🙌
I think you have a career in voice-over or narration in your future my friend.
You humble me, my friend, thank you! 😀 No matter how hard I try, whenever we sit down here for a board game with a story and characters involved, I always end up with ability to improvise only three persons:
1). Old man.
2). Haggard old man.
3). Drunk & haggard old man. 😄
@@GerialdsForge Well you could try old cartoon bear, haggard old cartoon bear...
I have to agree "npc". Even if you have a voice with narrow range, it is truly pleasing to listen to.
Clint Eastwood has a narrow range. Morgan Freeman has a narrow range. With your
crafting talents and voice, you are your own Vitruvius. After all, you are a master builder.
Im looking forward to hearing you say something like... "believe"
@@shawnmulberry774 But what about haggard *drunk* old cartoon bear? 😄
I haven't thought about the matter from this point of view. Morgan Freeman's voice is fresh in my head, but I'll surely re-watch some of mr. Eastwood these days and listen closely. This is very kind of you - and thank you for giving me this whole new perspective 🙌
I liked this video for the terrible Nutella joke. Beautiful
Well, I would have to be 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐬 not to include that joke. Thank you 🖖
It's weird how you Look like Matthew Mercer
Probably a rather unfit and accent-heavy version of him 😄
Leaving looks aside, I always found his personality and passion for his work truly inspiring. That's something to strive for 🙂
Are you ok? We havnt heard from you in a few months
Everything is fine, thank you! 👋 Hand-crafting, filming & editing these videos take incredible amount of time, but all the while I make regular updates over my Patreon / Instagram / Facebook pages - check them out if you haven't! 😉
I recently finished some work on the miniatures I want to include in the next episode, and it should go live soon!
is your ranger 28 mm tall??
Hey, Jo! Yeah, he is 28 mm tall 🙂
Where can I order this set?
I've made this set of terrain for home scenery & gaming uses. It's not on sale, unfortunately - sorry! 🥴
But I'm flattered by the thought, and happy to know you liked it! ❤
This dude's voice is making my ovaries quiver... and I don't even have ovaries...
Hahaha, come on 😄 Well, at the very least, I managed to make something tingle.. inside your soul! 😁
@@GerialdsForge My soul was tingled. Amazing job on the terrain too!
@@Maldracai Thanks so much! 🤘 It's really inspiring to get such positivity in return, and I truly appreciate it 😀
Awesome content but to be honest i would love if you just spoke normally... i had to turn sound off and watch the video with subtitles xD
Terrain looks amazing, but don't ever paint eyes ever, ever again.
If you mean the ranger's eyes, I've added a more vibrant white to them on the video editing stage for that scene. Why, what's wrong with them? 🙂
Cool techniques but the voice acting is so fake and annoying...
Sure it is! 😄 Well, that's what the pinned comment is for, as I wanted to let everyone know it's the first time I made an intro like that. After all, I never claimed to be even a relatively professional English voice actor 🤪
