When there were a full plethora of choices in each platform: sedan, hatchback, coupe and wagon. Very few simple, affordable compact cars available today.

Now it's just boring crossover suv only. and if there is a sedan it's only a 4 door, no coupe, hatch, wagon, and no bench seat option.

My grandma had one, and I remember it having a distinct tight, Japanese feel to the ride and handling. No wonder, it had Mazda suspension!

I had 1993 Escort LX wagon and bought it for $1200 in 2018. I loved it. Drove it from Akron, Ohio, to Baltimore, Maryland, up to six times a week. Never left me stranded. I miss it. 😢😢

Ok I picked up the same thing, 93 wagon white automatic, I dropped a valve seat , Install new pistons, bearing , head, and rebuild trans, I'm getting 28 mpg average, but I have kids, dogs, tools, I put 500 miles a week, , it's at 120,000, I bought it at 70,000

It's a shame that Ford no longer produces them: they were peppy for what they were, and very economical.

Yea because it was a Mazda underneath lol. Not that I’m saying anything bad. I have the older gen escape and I only bought it because it’s a Mazda underneath. And has the 2.5 Mazda design engine that lasts forever

I had a '93 LX sedan. I bought in '94 with 29,000 miles and drove it for five years. It had 114,000 miles and the original clutch when I sold it. Great gas mileage.

Brings back a lot of memories. My parents bought, brand new, a 1991 Escort LX like shown, except colors were opposite. Ours was Wild Strawberry Metallic outside and Titanium Gray Cloth inside. Other than that, ours was exactly as shown. They bought it from Steven Augusta Ford in Kansas in 1990.

I had a 95 lx 2 dr hatchback model. It was the best car I've ever owned. It was 3 yrs old with 60k miles on it, when I bought it. Kept for 14 yrs. Sold it with 285,000 miles on it. It was practical and fun to drive. Thanks to the 5 spd manual transmission. Priced right too, at $10k.

Have 2, 98's and miss this older years styling. all that said my manual shift car has 384 000 miles and runs great despite leaking oil . and gets easy 42 plus mpg on the highway.

Quite a strong resemblance to our British Escort at the back lights esp the Orion saloon which we had just a saloon/sedan Escort.
Rest of its quite abit different than the UK Mk5 Escort.
Dare i say the Mazda components and some of the engines were pr9b better than our CVH units at the time.

I had a 91 3 Dr lx 5 spd. It would cruise ALL day at 80 at about 2500 rpm and get a real world mpg of 40 on the highway. Ir did have an absolutely massive hatch and at 6 ft , I had plenty of legroom behind myself. The rear "passive rear steering" did make it tail happy and susceptible to snap over steer. It was a neat a good and reliable car!

1:43 An 80 mph speedometer? Well, I guess it's 85, technically, if you peg it. At least they'd stopped highlighting 55 by this point.

Ford certainly got its mileage out of the Mazda B platform with the North American Escort, as it was used from 1991 to 2003. A shame that Ford fitted most of these Escorts with rear drum brakes.

This car probably had the closest styling to it's European cousins, and the you can see the resemblance to the Protégé. It's right before the 90's bubble car look that everything got, softer lines, but still some creases and wedge look of the 80's cars. Looking back I think Ford had some nice styling in the late 80's early 90's, especially the Ford Serra Cosworth. I guess the Merkur XR4Ti was what we got on this side of the pond as the Serra, but it only stuck around for one generation.
